SINGAPORE — Two socio-political websites, one of them less than a year old, have called time on their operations.

Inconvenient Questions (IQ), launched in January last year by former Nominated Member of Parliament Viswa Sadasivan, will cease operations next Saturday. Meanwhile, Six-Six News, which went live last June, shut down early last month.

The lack of funds was behind the sites’ decisions to close, with investors unwilling to continue dishing out money to keep the websites, which offered content and commentary in areas including politics and social issues, running.

Mr Sadasivan, the founder and editor-in-chief of IQ, told TODAY that the site had hoped to obtain funds from the same donors who had contributed in its first year of operations, and there was an understanding that they would do so into its second year.

“But I believe given the economic situation, that didn’t work out,” he said. “So for the past few months, I’ve been trying to negotiate some kind of a deal, but it didn’t quite work out.”

At Six-Six News, media consultant Ian De Cotta, who was a contributor to the site, said its publisher, Mr Kannan Chandran, had told him early last month that it was shutting because “investors were re-evaluating their commitment to the site”.

A former Six-Six News employee, who declined to be named, confirmed that the site shut down officially on April 1. Mr Chandran had cited a “lack of funding”, the employee said.

Mr Chandran could not be reached for comment.

Nevertheless, activity on the site did not cease completely. On May 5, the site published an article written by political commentator Derek da Cunha on the Singapore People’s Party’s account of 2011 meetings with the Singapore Democratic Party.

Mr Sadasivan said the decision to close IQ, which was made several weeks ago, was regrettable and sad. On top of money from his own pocket, the site is funded by a “major donor” as well as other contributors. “Basically, the funds have dried up,” he said.

Pointing out that it was “rewarding” that viewership had been climbing and the site had been receiving good feedback from viewers, he said: “There’s a regret that it had to come to this, but I don’t regret starting it. It has been an incredible learning journey … to put out the kind of content that we managed to put out in a very short space of time.”

He said he was taking a “six- to 12-month” hiatus, and might subsequently consider the possibility of setting up another platform focusing on issues of global impact, such as Islamophobia and climate change.

Professor Ang Peng Hwa, from the Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI), said the small media market here — where the pool of viewers is likely to be small — could have been a factor. “If IQ had been in a larger country, population-wise, then it might actually be sustainable,” he said.

The concept of news sites, Prof Ang added, appeared to be unsustainable in the Republic. “The news market in general is a challenge and … socio-political (content) is a niche within that — it’s serious, it’s not entertainment, so it becomes a greater challenge,” he said.

Saying that such sites need to have more sustainable business models, Prof Ang, who pointed to overseas examples including the United States news satire programme The Daily Show, suggested that they could combine news or socio-political content with an entertainment element.

Assistant Professor Liew Kai Khiun, also from WKWSCI, said that the digital space has seen the proliferation of socio-political websites, with the situation compounded by the presence of mainstream media outlets. He felt that Six-Six News and IQ found it hard to develop a niche, and said prospective entrants must enter the market with an awareness of changing socio-economic and technological trends.

I disagree with the comments from the 2 academics about the market being small and proliferation of news blogs. Yes they are factors but you still need to provide tidbits and breaking news to keep the popcorn eating audience interested. Both Sadasivam and Kannan are local media veterans and would know this and I note that they are not the ones making those claims. The only way that high brow stuff can carry on is if they are sponsored by one of the policy institutes to provide alternative viewpoints. Unfortunately they are govt entities but I do wish a foundation such as the Lien or Lee Foundation stand in with the setup formed with a board of trustees that will ensure that alternative views have a forum.

The danger is that when there is no outlet for alternative views, people will gravitate to the likes of TRE of the past, the Real Singaporean which have distorted the facts, used race as an excuse to generate returns etc.

What really irks me is that responsible news sites like IQ keep facing a problem with funds, and then we have the likes of TRS, ASS and TRE who earn mega bucks through spreading falsehoods, posting misleading articles, making unwarranted attacks that detract from the real issues, posting articles with racial undertones, etc. TRS editors paid off their HDB flat with just one year of income from the site, and then we have sites like IQ closing down because of funding woes. It isn't fair at all.

Independent, Mothership, and the rest like them need to take a look at their model of engagement and see how to spruce up readership.

Agree with you bro. Sad state of affairs. It also reflects on Singaporeans who just cannot see the PAP for what they are.

Socio-political sites focus too much on bashing PAP and too little on coming up with workable alternatives that they could implement on the ground. They should not always blame the government. If their ideas were any good, they could start small and implement it in a limited way in their own companies or SMCs.

Sinkies are pragmatic. They want action, they want results. They are less interested in your speeches. For some weird reason, too many voters in most countries are charmed by pretty speeches. Little wonder their politicians promise the world and deliver so little.

I've never heard of Six-Six News or Inconvenient Questions (IQ) -although I would have liked to read their articles.

The MSM or govt related SM would obviously not help to publicise their existence and without the ability to reach their target audience, its a non starter.
Normally in a free country, this is a case where idealist university students can be roped in to help but with the present oppressive regime, undergrads are more worried about bread and butter than ideas. Sad indeed. In the long term society suffers.

Both are online, both are run by well known industry professionals, both are structured to a high standard, one is print (six-six) and the other is visual (IQ). By this approach, deep pockets are required for the audience to build up. They seemed to secure advertisers and sponsors when they first launched but my guess is the viewship numbers have not met the target for the sponsors to resubscribe. The other issue is both founders are not full time on this.

The irony is that there is a crying need for a decent socio-political site that is independent and not tied to apron strings of the PAP. The demand is there but how can this be supplied. Both initiatives are not well known though IQ is first of its kind and experimental. So is it question of lack of awareness or the inability to hold their audience as the default site of choice. 6:6 also had too much of coverage and content of a wide ranging kind but the narratives were too short to hold attention. So one would end up having to go elsewhere for the full story.
