Last month in Parliament, Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say said that nine in ten companies retrenching employees in Singapore had the "standard practice" of paying retrenchment benefits.

However, he stopped short of supporting compulsory retrenchment benefits, saying that the tripartite partners agree it is important to allow for the “flexibility to negotiate … rather than prescribing it in the law”.

Really not surprising as the PAP is the largest employers in Spore, directly or through their GLCs.
With so many "lesser mortals" being made redundant they can save plenty of $$$ by not paying retrenchment benefits.

Better for zorro to be devoured by hungry dogs at the Padang. The worker-spectators can also vent their anger on this traitor by throwing stones at him.

'Standard practice' of retrenchment benefits by companies? Does he knows most give half a month for every year of service, if any, by courtesy of the company. PMET is worst off, usually nothing if not stated in employment agreement.

With structural change in work environment, and if the retrenched is 40 years and above, though luck. A miracle if they even managed to find another job within 6 months, salary may well be just a fraction too. They had better of driving taxis or excercise by collecting cardboards.

This guy is always on some kind of weeds. Wonder when he will wake up from it, if ever.

Why is there a need for legislated retrenchment benefits when most companies pay them out anyway? This shows that the overwhelming majority of singapore employers are fair employers.

I think hardly anyone will be surprised about what Toothpick Zorro Lim says given the so called " symbiotic " relationship between NTUC and PAP-but what surprises is that 70% actually voted for this ??????!

Thanks to the 70% who voted rationally, sinkie workers have not needed to go on strike for the past few decades, while workers in Europe strike frequently.
