I think you could be reading too much into Amos. He holds strong view about religion - Christianity in particular most likely because he was forced to attend church and imbibe the belief system at young age. Thus the urge to rebel. Likely nothing more than a compulsion to reject what was shoveled down his throat when his character is one which values independence of thought and action

I believe prayer or a stint with the Nuns of Mother Theresa in the slums of Calcutta would help him see that there is an alternative to life - a life of Service to the less fortunate....... He could even turn out to be someone like Father Damien, the pastor to the lepers......
