Did LHL meddle in Philippines internal affairs and incurred Duterte's wrath?
while it's widely reported that duterte falsely claimed that sg's pm endorsed him and the false claim was corrected by sg (this is not insider news, it has been out for a while) the latter claim that "no country as a matter of protocol will make those comments about candidates" is incorrect. all you need to do is stop being lazy and do a quick search online. the leader of the world's 2nd superpower endorsed a candidate of the world's top superpower over 4 months ago.

Vladimir Putin gave a qualified endorsement of Donald Trump’s candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday, saying he hoped Trump’s election could improve Moscow’s relations with the United States.
“He’s a really brilliant and talented person, without any doubt. It’s not our job to judge his qualities, that’s a job for American voters, but he’s the absolute leader in the presidential race,” Putin said after his annual press conference in Moscow, according to the Interfax news wire.
“He says he wants to move on to a new, more substantial relationship, a deeper relationship with Russia; how can we not welcome that? Of course we welcome that,” Putin added.

The Straits Times reported Duterte's claim and SG ambassador's denial and also that Duterte threatened to burn SG's flag. But I dont thrust the Straits Times and wonder whether LHL offended the Philippines despite sucking up to filipinos and supporting them to celebrate their National Day at Ngee Ann City.

From what I've heard, Duterte is the people's choice primarily for a number of reasons - he's the least corrupt among the candidates, his track record of running Davao (running death squads and vigilante operations), and his power base at the south which includes the traditional enemies of the state like the communists, the Mindanao families and even islamists.
This tito will be a interesting character to watch for the next 6 years. He'll be a unifying president promoting nationalism. But I predict him to be a diplomatic trainwreck. Asean will take 2 steps backwards.
