MANILA • Philippine President Benigno Aquino vowed yesterday to launch a military assault aimed at "neutralising" the Abu Sayyaf militants who beheaded a Canadian hostage and are holding more than 20 other foreigners.

"Casualties are to be expected. But what has to be of utmost importance is neutralising the criminal activities of the ASG," he said in a statement, referring to the Abu Sayyaf Group.

Mr Aquino released the statement after the severed head of Canadian John Ridsdel, kidnapped seven months ago from aboard a yacht, was dumped on Monday on a street on Jolo, a remote southern island that is one of the Abu Sayyaf's main strongholds.

"This murder was meant to terrorise our whole population. The Abu Sayyaf thought they could instil fear in us. Instead, they have galvanised us even further to ensure justice is meted out," he said.

"We have always been open to talks with those who desire peace, but those who commit atrocities can expect the full might of the state." He did not give a time frame for the assault.

Abu Sayyaf militants, whose leaders have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria group, are holding more than 20 foreigners captive. They include another Canadian and a Norwegian man who were abducted at the same time as Mr Ridsdel at a marina near Davao, the biggest city in the southern Philippines. A Filipina was kidnapped as well.

The group is also believed to be holding a Dutch birdwatcher kidnapped from a southern Philippine island in 2012, as well as 14 Indonesian and and four Malaysian sailors abducted over the past month.

Mr Aquino said the captives were under the control of Radullan Sahiron, one of the Abu Sayyaf's founders who is famous for losing one arm in a battle against the military.

He said Sahiron had consolidated his forces around himself and the captives in Sulu, a small Muslim-populated archipelago about 1,000km from Manila. Jolo is the biggest island in Sulu. The Abu Sayyaf is believed to have just a few hundred militants but has withstood repeated US-backed military offensives against it, surviving by using the mountainous, jungle terrain of the southern islands to its advantage.

Philippines' Abu Sayyaf beheads remaining Malaysian hostage seized from Sandakan resort

Islamist militants in the Philippines on Tuesday (Nov 17) beheaded the remaining Malaysian hostage they seized in May from a resort in Malaysia's Sabah state.

Brigadier-General Alan Arrojado, commander of the Joint Task Group Sulu, said Mr Bernard Then, 39, an engineer, was beheaded at around 4pm at a remote Abu Sayyaf stronghold in Jolo island, in Sulu province, some 1,400km south of the capital Manila.

He said Mr Then's family "failed to comply" with the militants' demand "during their negotiation that prompted them to execute their plan".

"Accordingly, the body was immediately buried in the vicinity where they beheaded the victim," he said.

He said efforts were now being undertaken to locate Mr Then's remains.

Mr Then was beheaded more than a week after the Abu Sayyaf released Ms Thien Nyuk Fun, 50, manager of the Ocean King Seafood Restaurant in Sandakan town, Sabah, reportedly after receiving some 30 million pesos (S$900,000) in ransom.

Mr Then and Ms Thien were taken from the same resort.

Mr Then was reportedly suffering from leg injuries he sustained while in captivity, and had been slowing down his captors.

The Abu Sayyaf had threatened to behead him just after releasing Ms Thien.

Mr Then was beheaded just hours after Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak landed in Manila for the two-day summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Police identified the leaders of the group behind the Sandakan abduction as Alhabsy Misaya, Alden Bagade and Angah Adji.

The Abu Sayyaf was formed by disgruntled Moro Islamic fighters in 1991, with Al-Qaeda funding. However, it did not gain prominence till May 2000, when it attacked a dive resort in Sipadan, Malaysia, taking 21 hostages.

And how is it that Ang Mo tua kee, and Asians aren't?

That's because in the western mindset. every individual is a life. S/he is someone's brother/sister/husband/wife/son/daughter. And given a personality, a character. Everyone is important. In the Asian mindset. a person is simply just someone in the crowd, a statistic. I sometimes hear such statements such as "There are so many millions more, why is that ONE person considered so important for? So this thinking, and attitude eventailly permeates through the community and everyone becomes just another person, soulless. Stop blaming and directing all of your gripes to the westerners. Start looking at yourselves, and ask what you can do to lift your neighbour up!

Cheers!

Prophet Muhammed and his men committed piracy and held captives for ransom. What Aby Sayyaf are doing is very Islamic. Every Muslim who has read Islamic scripture knows these acts very well. The reason why they are acceptable to such acts is they are first brainwashed into believing Muhammed is the perfect role model for Muslims. After many years of such brainwashing, they are still not told of these acts, they are told only the good stories. It is much later in life when they are told of these acts and by then they are told that their god allows such acts because Muhammed was being attacked and he needed to defend himself and to feed himself. This is why Muslims do not see such acts as well as other that include him beheading, enslaving, raping and commiting incest with his first cousin who was also his daughter-in-law and pedophilia as sins or crimes. These are all allowed since Allah always allowed these acts through scriptural verses that were allegedly handed to Muhammed.

Muhammed's conquests began by raiding trade caravans and then ransoming the captives. This then grew to battles and wars against tribes once he could gather bandits and other followers.
"When Muhammad and his followers moved in the year 622 from the commercial center of Mecca to the more agricultural settlement of Medina, almost all of the emigrants found themselves out of work. They didn't own farming land in Medina,
and because they had left behind suppliers and customers alike they couldn't trade as they had in Mecca. So Muhammad turned to the longstanding Arabian practice of the ghazu, or bounty raid. His men would capture camels and caravan
drivers and hold them for ransom."

Bernard Then is a kafir. Why would any pious Muslim country risk its soldiers for a dead kafir?
