in Germany.

BERLIN: Germany's coalition parties plan to boost demand for electric cars by exempting them from vehicle tax, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily reported on Wednesday, citing coalition sources.

Under the plans, individuals who buy an electric car by 2020 would not have to pay vehicle tax for ten years, reported the paper. Support could also include a research programme which would boost the development of batteries.

The parliamentary groups of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and her Social Democrat (SPD) partners, have agreed on the main points and could agree on the full package on Thursday, ending months of haggling, said the paper.

Purchase incentives are also possible but they would be decided later at a meeting of Merkel, SPD Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel and auto chiefs.

German auto executives have long pushed the government to introduce incentives to lift demand for electric cars. Pressure has increased since Volkswagen's emissions scandal last year.

The government aims to increase the number of electric cars on German roads to a million by 2020 from just 50,000.

E Cars are the in-word among car enthusiasts almost everywhere in the world right now. My friend in Toronto is eyeing a Tesla as his next drive. Singapore is not keeping with the trends of the developed world in this. Here, the main topic for cars is - the COE! Whether up or down?

Cheers!

It is terrible. How to make up for the lost taxes from petrol tariffs? Lump sum upfront? Our scholars are scratching their heads over this, hoping it is a mere fad that will go away by itself.

Goes to show some governments care more for money to pay their big fat salaries than the environment.

Coal-fired plants should be outlawed by now. Solar, or nuclear are the clear options. China, with her air pollution issues should be aware of this.

Cheers!

The emissions produced by the coal fired power plant in Guangzhou that was previously powering the second hand vehicle.

Each technology should be able to stand on its own merits. Tax breaks and exemptions distort the free market.

No. Sorry, I do not read the Straits Times. What emission does his Tesla model produce?

Cheers!

The emission tax was not for the car, what emission does an electric car produces?..unless the user bring his girl friend to one corner & they have a hot canoodling..

The excuse was the Power Plant that produces the electricity that charges the batteries that power the car, produces emission & they base on the amount of watts needed to charge the batteries.

They certainly have creative ways of taxing you.....so, you charges anything from your smartphones to ?? in the house, you have already paid for emission taxes..it is built into your bill..right?

Another reason why price of oil will start to decline as its usage drops.

Nobody stopping people using oil to generate electricity. Price wil find a floor. It just expensive methods of extraction and refining of expensive derivatives going broke from over capacity, that all.

The problem is that the PAP sees it as a money making opportunity & puts in place all kinds of taxes & fees to distort the market.

impossible.....nearly 20 million cars are added every year, every country is in mad pursuit gdp growth which means increasing demand for energy, america alone is consuming three times more fossil fuels than they did 30 years ago,far exceeding their production capacity of 10 million barrels a day......resulting in wars in the middle east to secure more sources.....right now renewable energy is supplying only 5 percent of the world's energy needs......besides oil companies will never relinquish their massive oil profits....

The electricity tariff already taken into accounts the pollution by power stations? If not, every time we switch on the lights, they come and charge you emission tax.

Oil has gotten cheaper and cheaper, because more and more is being refined, and with advances in technology (eg. extraction of oil from shale), the recent price got so low, it scared the shit out of everybody. But society has to look further than just the price of oil itself - the impact of oil (and other fossil fuels to generate electricity) is dangerous to the planet, It's getting hotter and hotter each month. We feel it, ocean levels are rising, the polar bears are getting thinner! Greenhouse gases have been steadily increasing since the Industrial Revolution, and it is time our species generated power more responsibly.

Cheers!
