PAP has run out of ideas for Bukit Batok, Dr Paul Tambyah charges

PAP has run out of ideas for the whole country, not just BB. When you see people all the time trying to solicit charitable donations from passers-by and "financial advisors" at every corner, you know they must be desperate.

In this election, PAP are the ones who have shown bad character and behaving like hypocrites, they keep smearing and insulting Dr Chee without looking at themselves in the mirror.

If PAP wants to condemn bad character, why did PAP not publicly condemned PAP MP David Ong who cheated on his wife and had a 6 months adulterous affair with another married PAP member who is mother of 3 young kids??? Why is PAP so quiet about this???

PAP are truly hypocrites, hope the BB voters are not conned by their crap.

Chee: Let voters discern character of candidate for themselves

Published 02 May 2016

The character of an election candidate is important and something voters should be concerned with, Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan said.

But voters can see this for themselves, he added, saying: "Character is what people see in you, not what you tell people you have or you don't have."

It also has to be demonstrated and earned, not just talked about, Dr Chee said yesterday, following a weekend where the issue of character has dominated exchanges between the SDP and the People's Action Party (PAP). "If you want to talk about character, then show yourself to have character," he said. "When there is character, you don't have to go and tell other people 'that guy has poor character'. Ironically, it reflects on that person."

He was speaking to reporters after a cycling outreach event in Bukit Batok, where he faces PAP's Mr Murali Pillai in the May 7 by-election.

Dr Chee's remarks come after Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat, a member of the PAP's central executive committee, hit out at the SDP's argument that the character of election candidates should be off limits. Mr Heng said on Sunday that SDP's argument that a person is not defined by his actions or words - made by SDP central executive committee member Paul Tambyah - was "one of the most astounding statements ever made in the history of Singapore politics".

Mr Heng's comments came a day after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, PAP's secretary-general, raised questions about the character of Dr Chee.

PAP did not hold a rally on Sunday but SDP did, and Dr Chee had at his rally called on the ruling party to "stop the gutter politics" and focus on policy issues.

Yesterday, he added there was no need to "run down" a person or talk bad about him. "Character is when you show other people what you can do for them, not how badly you talk about them," he said.

"I keep saying, let's not get into this thing where you show everybody how holy you are, how unblemished you are. People see this in you, (so) be humble."

He also reiterated his view that there is "absolutely no way" an MP can hold a full-time job and still discharge his responsibilities fully.

"The more I come out and talk to people and meet people, the more that you find that it's so ridiculous for MPs to be part-time," he said. "Absolutely no way that you can do the job on a part-time basis."

Dr Chee said he intends to focus on three areas for the rest of the campaign, which will end on Thursday. Cooling-off Day is on Friday, and Bukit Batok residents will vote on Saturday.

Besides pledging to be a full-time MP if he wins, Dr Chee said the SDP will make sure that it takes good care of the town council, while ensuring that it executes its social programmes at the municipal level.

"At the parliamentary level, we've been laying out - and we'll continue to lay out - some of the national issues that we're very concerned about: cost of living and retrenchment insurance," he said.

SDP will also be talking about education, he added. The party will hold a rally tonight.

Bukit Batok by-election: SDP's Chee Soon Juan questions PAP leaders' remarks; says he is confused who his opponent is

Published 03 May 2016

SINGAPORE - Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan says that recent remarks by People's Action Party (PAP) leaders have left him wondering just who his opponent is in the Bukit Batok by-election.

"All I know is that I'm getting very confused who my opponent is," he said on Tuesday (May 3).

"I thought it is Mr Murali. It is turning out to be everybody else except him," he said, referring to the PAP's Murali Pillai, while speaking to reporters after a morning walkabout in Bukit Batok.

Turning to the SDP's policy proposals, he said the retrenchment insurance scheme - which he has been pushing - was gaining traction. He said that even Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had to address the issue of unemployment insurance during his May Day rally.

Dr Chee argued that his proposed retrenchment insurance scheme is still needed as it is not enough to help workers retrain and upgrade their skills.

"When people get retrenched what happens? You keep telling them, 'Oh we'll think of how to upgrade your skills, retrain'. Now that's important yes, but they've been doing this for years," Dr Chee said on Tuesday.

He added that upgrading efforts are undermined by the influx of foreign workers who can accept salaries that Singaporeans cannot survive on.

"So there must be some consistency in what this Government does and it's a shame that they continue to try to pay lip service to this problem and not really address the situation Singaporeans find themselves in," he said.

Dr Chee added said that the SDP will respond to the healthcare programmes mooted by Mr Murali and elaborate on its own proposals at the party's rally on Tuesday night.

He had to resign so that they did not have to publicly condemn him. But they have not explained why this type of incidents has already happened twice, which means it is not a one-off incident where you can just move on from.

Debate issues, don’t just ‘throw slime’, Chee tells PAP

Updated: 11:01 AM, May 3, 2016

SINGAPORE — While he welcomed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s involvement in the Bukit Batok by-election, Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan said he wished Mr Lee would stick to issues concerning the ward’s residents.

Speaking to the media on Monday morning (May 2), Dr Chee also suggested collaborating with Members of Parliament (MPs) from the People’s Action Party (PAP) and the Workers’ Party (WP) who have mulled over the idea of retrenchment insurance, to push such a scheme through the House.

Dr Chee, who is up against the PAP’s Murali Pillai in the May 7 poll, said of Mr Lee’s involvement in the hustings: “I certainly welcome his presence here, but I wish he would just stick to the issues — what’s good for Bukit Batok residents, rather than throwing slime all the time.

“I’m more than happy to debate with anyone, (Mr Lee) included, but it just seems as though they want to not talk about the issues ... and just continue to run their opponents down,” he told reporters after cycling around the ward and greeting residents.

“That’s not becoming of a good campaign. I just wish the PAP would stop doing things like that,” he added.

His comments came after the Prime Minister, who is the PAP secretary-general, visited Bukit Batok on Saturday, when he said Dr Chee had presented himself as a changed man but remained the same person who is not contrite about his past.

On the retrenchment insurance scheme his party is proposing, Dr Chee said some PAP and WP parliamentarians have also been looking at this measure and they should work together to propose a Bill if he is elected.

“You have PAP MPs even thinking about this as well — we need to work with them. And there are also WP MPs who want to actually start talking about these schemes,” he said. “Get together. It doesn’t mean that just because we’re from different parties, we cannot work together.”

Asked to respond to Mr Lee’s comments at the May Day Rally that the Government’s measures to help workers find employment were better than unemployment insurance, Dr Chee said: “They always say it doesn’t work until they start adopting it.”

Many advanced and productive economies in Europe and Asia already have forms of retrenchment insurance, he reiterated. By contrast, the Government here is “obstinate, wilful in its determination not to have some kind of a safety net for workers who get retrenched”, he said.

Saying that retrenched workers need “respite” and a “shock absorber” to tide over unemployment, and find a new job or retrain, he added: “We hope for full employment, but it’s not going to happen. The reality is that retrenchment is coming and taking place thick and fast.

“The people can’t live on hope, they can’t eat hope. They need assistance ... the minute they get retrenched.”
