any bros here with dogs at home? i am looking at getting one. any suggestions?

Adopt, don't buy. Buying puppies merely encourages unscrupulous breeders and profiteering puppy mills, and increases the population of abandoned pets.

Voices for Animals runs an adoption drive every fortnight at Pasir Ris. Derrick Tan (founder) and his volunteers are doing a great job, though they're overwhelmed by the number of dogs dumped on them by puppy mills going out of biz, as well as those abandoned by owners who have got tired of their pets. Funds are also a big constraint. I've adopted from them before – two thumbs up.

Check out their FB site for updates: https://www.facebook.com/VFASIN

P.S. PAP doggies aside, dogs are better than most humans I've met, anyday.

my favourite breed is still the golden retriever or Labrador. you will never regret, good choice and my OZ friends like to keep them and they tells me that a home is incomplete without a dog.

to doggie and get doggied!

A dog is a huge commitment. There is obedience training, vet bills, exercise and ongoing socialising. It's not for everyone.

My dog takes up at least 2 to 3 hours of my time every single day. Breakfast prep takes 15 minutes, 45 minute walk after breakfast, 30 minutes of grooming, 30 minutes of training routines, another 45 minute walk in the evening then dinner.

Then there's agility training for 2 hours every Tuesday.

Vet visits are twice a year minimum... more if the dog is sick or wounded which will happen.

When the dog gets old geriatric care can cost $500 to $1000 per month easily.

Absolutely. I always tell people who want dogs to that owning a dog is like having a baby; in fact a bigger commitment because babies will eventually grow into independent adults but a dog will always be dependent on you.

As for bills, tell me about that. I just spent $4,500 on cataract and lens implant surgery for my dog.

I am not worried about dogs betraying their owners. I am far more worried of the owner betraying the dog. That's why I always discourage those I know from getting a dog unless they are absolutely sure they're ready for the commitment and the expense.

Ah, but will you betray the dog? Neglect it, abuse it, abandon it ... I've seen tonnes of such cases.:o

U have been playing with the numerous PAP running dogs here, why u need more?

bro, real dogs preferred. after reading some of the posts here, maybe i will go volunteer at one of these shelters first. what i have is lots of time. of course when i start volunteering, i wont have that much time to deal with the doggies in this forum.

The type of dog you finally adopt depends on where you stay. If you have a small premises, then a small dog.

Be prepared not to have holidays as when you like.

Ah, but will you betray the dog? ..

I always shout "dinnerrr" and my pariah dog runs to me with tail wagging.. And when he realises there's no food, the disappointed expression on his face is priceless. Sends me into a laughing fit everytime and that has been a source of entertainment for the past 4 years.

Is this betrayal?

bro, what a coincidence. For the past few months, I have been thinking of getting a dog. I have never been without a pet dog since I was a teenager (that was a long time ago). My last dog passed away from old age six years ago. I would love to just get another dog, but the heartache of seeing them grow old and sick still prevents me from doing so. Don't know if I can go through it again and again. At the same time, I tell myself I need a dog, and that the heartache would be worth it because of the love and loyalty the dog would give you through his/her life.

I have always only wanted pedigrees, but now I am also open to adopting a mixed breed perhaps. Here are the few adoption sites FYI.
