round trip airfare would cost you at least us$1299. :p

I've relatives in US who can assist me if I want, and the Levis online shop is also a lot cheaper. The point is that retail prices in Sinkieland is super high, and that one of the factors making Sinkieland the most expensive in the world.

u.s. have cheap land out in the boondocks or industrial zones. retailers are turning gutted factories and warehouses into outlet malls. rent is cheap thus they sell older inventories at a steep discount. those older merchandise and products have been sitting in regular retail for 6 months or over 2 seasons and they go to outlet or "last call" malls before being recycled. for example, coach makes a killing selling older bags at 70% discount yet earning sizable margins, but at least they are moving inventories instead of writing them off at cost. michael kors upon seeing sales go through the roof at coach decides to do the same. their outlet stores are also packed like coach's during holidays and sales.

When I'm at the neighbourhood mall I often pass the Levis store. It's either empty or has only 1 or 2 people browsing.

If you are going to Bangkok just visit one of the department stores. I think they still carry levis:confused: That's where I bought my last Levis a decade or two ago. It was from the Robinson store in Thailand.

The next time I'm in AMK Hub, I will take a look at the Levis prices, whether their prices have gone up. I hate shopping but I should probably force myself to shop when I'm overseas. My wife loves to shop when she's overseas especially in South Korea.

If you live in the AMK area, then go to Bishan's Junction 8. There is a Levis store there, but hurry because it might be the next victim of high rentals.

Bro I'm also a serial Levi's jeans man. Good thing is that some Levi's jeans look proper enough for me to wear into clients' offices. Can't say the same about the hotter brands like G-star or True religion.

I've also been fucking disappointed with the range they offer in sinkieland Levi's stores. So lately I've been getting mine in Hong Kong where they have a much bigger selection. The weird thing about Hk Levi's stores is that they only have even sizes... so getting a size 33 is tricky there.

Have u tried buying from the online store? So they really do ship to sinkieland?

The PAP govt is SO SLOW to realise it is the KILLER RENTALS and HIGH SING$ that is doing the most damage to the retail and tourist industry that supports it. Almost every currency in the world is going SOUTH except the SING$. Won't be long before ORCHARD ROAD becomes GHOST TOWN ROAD

doesnt matter,as long as they can keep importing trash onto this island, they can keep increasing rents however they want.theres no escape for you guys here,u are slaves and property of PAP.

i bought a 50 dollar pair of jeans from Target and im hooked on it,despite the synthetic polypropene polyethylene polystyrene polyurethanes etc etc feel to it,it is so extremely comfortable i can wear it for a week without washing till it stinks like a drunk hobo that smells like vomit and piss.now i swear by everything from target even shirts and shoes.i dont understand people who go specifically for a brand especially a expensive one,the fact its a american brand already tells u its a ripoff, all our clothes are made in bangladesh doesnt matter from target or hnm or uniqlo or levi's or marks and spencers.just look for the friggin tag in ur jeans or pants that says made in bangladesh.

Haha. The only thing I've ever bought from target are clothes hangers. Sorry but I do mind how I dress when I go out. So no kmart/target clothes for me.

That said I'm not a brand fanboy and I don't go for luxury brands. There's no denying flagship brands have a minimal standard for their products over unspecialised ones. I would rather pay more for this quality and reliability.

I just returned from Jakarta.

They have super high import duties but when i compare the prices of the branded goods in Jakarta retail malls (Not airport duty-free), the price is almost the same as those shops in Orchard ION because Singapore dollar appreciated so much against Rupiah.

3 Reasons Singaporeans No Longer Love Shopping on Orchard Road

Every nineties kid who grew up in Singapore spent a large part of their youth on Orchard Road (obviously, this was in the days before kids started spending 20 hours a week in tuition classes).

Hands up anyone who remembers California Lemon at Cineleisure, the benches outside Far East Plaza (for the ah bengs/lians) and spending hours listening to CDs at HMV at the Heeren or… Tower Records *gasp*.

These days, the Orchard Road shopping district is no longer cool. Despite the fact that it’s still crowded as hell, Orchard Road malls are struggling and resorting to desperate measures to attract customers who’ll actually spend some money.

What happened? Here are some reasons it has fallen out of favour with Singaporeans:

It’s way too crowded

Back in the days before Singapore got so jam-packed with people, Orchard Road was just crowded enough to be considered lively. The only area where the crowds got uncomfortable at times was the underpass between Wisma Atria and Takashimaya.

These days, the entire stretch is an unbearable stench of jostling bodies, especially on weekends. If there are more people, shouldn’t the malls be making more money?

Not enough apparently, due to the fact that newer malls like ION Orchard, Somerset 313, Orchard Central and Knightsbridge have sprung up like weeds in the past few decades and are now muscling in on the market share of older malls like Ngee Ann City and Wisma Atria.

“Driving to Orchard Road and squeezing with the crowds is too stressful. If I need to buy something, I just go straight to the shop and then get out as soon as I can. Shopping at Orchard on weekends is not enjoyable because it’s so damn crowded it makes me nauseous,” says Laura, a 32-year-old self-professed shopaholic and stay-at-home mum.

Singaporeans are feeling the stress of overcrowding, and now spend their weekends trying to find places that are more relaxing and less stressful than the malls on Orchard Road. Some are even willing to travel longer distances to hang out at cafes in suburban neighbourhoods.

People prefer to shop online and in heartland malls

Why battle ridiculously heavy traffic and crowded trains and elbow your way past hordes of annoying people who can’t stop blocking the escalators when you can buy the exact same things on the internet or in heartland malls?

Once upon a time, shopping in heartland malls meant wearing This Fashion clothes or being limited to the book selection at Popular.

Nowadays, new heartland malls are much more happening. There are stores like Kate Spade Saturday, Calvin Klein Jeans and Armani Exchange at Westgate, while Nex at Serangoon has a rooftop garden with, get this, a dog park, which we have to admit is freaking cool.

Even if you live in Bukit Batok or Yishun, where the neighbourhood malls still suck, you can just buy stuff online. Online shopping is often cheaper than buying stuff in malls since you don’t need to subsidise the high cost of rent, plus you can buy from retailers without Singapore outlets like Target.

You know what’s better than Pedestrian Night on Orchard Road? Not having to deal with not just cars but also other people.

Yvette, a 38-year-old lawyer, concurs. “I buy a large fraction of my things online now, from vitamin supplements to books for my kids. It’s so much more convenient as I don’t need to waste my time travelling to shopping malls. I can even get the merchants to deliver my purchases to my office.”

Don’t even get us started about the increase in parking fares. You’d be hardpressed to find a mall in the main Orchard Road area with a per-entry fee after 6pm. Instead, they’ve been replaced with time-based per entry rates. Thankfully there are still some safe havens for relatively affordable parking, which we’ve compiled here.

There are more and better hangout spots in Singapore now

Back in the 90s, there weren’t as many centrally-located places where people could hang out. Many of the most popular hangout spots didn’t exist in their current forms.

Hipster cafes did not exist, Tiong Bahru was just a residential estate full of old people, Arab Street was known for the mosque and old school fabric shops instead of sheesha, and the Marina Bay/Marina South area was known for its bowling alleys and kite flying.

Orchard Road was pretty much the only place where you could buy nice clothes or find many mid-range restaurants in one place. While other shopping and dining precincts like Holland Village and Siglap still existed, they were quieter and without the internet people who didn’t live close by had few ways of knowing their way around.

These days, let’s face it, there are about a million places more appealing to spend your weekend at than Orchard Road. If you’re into cafe hopping, you head to Tiong Bahru. If you want to buy hipster clothes, you head to Haji Lane. If you want to buy luxury goods, you head to Marina Bay Sands. If you want to eat at a nice restaurant, you can head almost anywhere else.

Doreen, a 32-year-old marketing manager living in the Upper Bukit Timah area, no longer spends as much of her free time in the city centre.

“My area used to be quite dead, but now with the opening of the new HillV2 mall and the influx of cafes and restaurants at Lorong Kilat, Chun Tin and the Old Fire Station, I prefer to hang out here on weekends than travel to town. I used to spend quite a lot of time at Orchard in my JC and uni days, but go there only once every few months now,” she says.

While Orchard Road is bigger and brighter than it ever was before, so is the rest of Singapore. And frankly, the brashness and boldness of the Orchard Road malls is starting to wear a little thin in comparison.

Prime mall rents continue to slide as luxury shoppers vanish

Store closures might spike this year.

When tourist arrivals in Singapore rose in 2015, landlords at the city’s prime shopping district were hopeful that this might finally end the long losing streak of luxury retail rents. However, the uptick in tourist numbers failed to arrest the decline in the first quarter of 2016.

Statistics from DTZ showed that average monthly first-storey rent in the Orchard/Scotts road area declined by 1.0% q-o-q to about $37.65 per sq ft in Q1 as luxury shopping demand continued to wane.

DTZ noted that although visitor arrivals, which form the bulk of shoppers in the prime shopping district, inched up 0.9% y-o-y in 2015, much of the increase was because of the low base in 2014 that resulted from aviation accidents. Compared to 2013 – a more representative year – visitors arrivals actually declined by 2.2% in 2015.

“Retailers in Orchard/Scotts Road are expected to face some pressure, especially due to regional competition from countries such as Bangkok, South Korea and Taiwan, which possess distinctive cultures and offer affordable shopping,” DTZ noted.

The report added that cheaper air fares and the relatively strong Singapore dollar have also contributed to weaker retail sales as visitors defer travel plans to the city-state.

As a result of the challenging retail environment, more store consolidations are anticipated amid rising operating costs and weaker in-store sales.

Brands that have recently announced business cessation in Singapore include furniture retailer, iwannagohome, and F&B establishment, Smoothie King.

To counter the slump, retailers should focus on service and improving customer experience, DTZ said.

“The retail sector is likely to gravitate towards a consumer-focused and experiential-based model. As retailers embrace competition from the online and mobile markets, more are coming up with creative and innovative solutions to turn these challenges into opportunities,” the report said.
