A man has been arrested in eastern China for allegedly damaging two automatic teller machines with a can of soft drink after failing to withdraw cash using his bank card, local media reports.

The man, surnamed Zhang, was detained on Friday after spraying the can’s contents into the ATM’s card acceptor, cash dispenser and receipt printer in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, the Nanjing Morning Post reported on Sunday.

CCTV footage showed Zhang waited until other customers had left before carrying out the attack on the night of January 16 , which burnt the circuit boards in the ATM that he attacked plus another one connected to it nearby, causing 49,000 yuan (HK$58,000) in damage.

Zhang was reported to have confessed to police that he destroyed the machine on purpose after he couldn’t withdraw cash from his bank account that was empty.

The operator of the broken cash machines, Huaxia Bank, called police, who put Zhang on a list of fugitives.

The suspect fled Nanjing after the incident and even his family lost contact with him.

Police found him more than two months later Nanchang, Jiangxi province, nearly 500km away.

He faces charges of deliberately damaging public property and told the newspaper that he regretted his actions expected to go to jail for his actions.

Hopefully, there was enough time during his 500 km journey for him to realise that the reason he couldn't withdraw cash was because his bank account was empty and not because the ATM was uncooperative. Then again, maybe not.

A woman in northeastern China pulled apart an ATM at a train station, claiming it had swallowed her card, according to a newspaper report.

The woman pulled at the cashpoint machine for 10 minutes at Changchun in Jilin province before she managed to rip off the front, the China Youth Daily reported.

After taking out some of the machine’s parts on Thursday afternoon she asked passers-by to help her find her card.

Several people called the police and officers who arrived at the scene later suspected the woman maybe mentally ill.

A man at the station had successfully duped her into shouting at the machine at one point to get her card to come out, the report said.

The woman has been sent to hospital for checks.

Several people said she had come to the same ATM two months before, saying her card had been swallowed and had started putting small objects into the slot where cards are inserted.

The report quoted a member of staff at the ATM’s bank as expressing surprise that anybody could rip off the front of the machine.

A similar incident was reported in Guangdong province last year when a woman dismantled an ATM which had taken her bank card.
