US Army not looking to build new bases in Singapore, spokesperson clarifies

Comments made to ASEAN reporters were "premature", and were given by an officer who did not speak on behalf of the United States Army's Pacific Command, says the US Army's Director of Public Affairs in the Pacific.

SINGAPORE: The United States Army has not been in discussions with Singapore on the possibility of building a logistics support operations base in the Republic, a spokesperson for the US Army said on Friday (Feb 12), contrary to a colonel's previous assertions.

"Though the US Army is exploring locations throughout the region for logistics support operations, there has been no discussion with Singapore on this possibility," said Colonel Rumi Nielson-Green, Director of Public Affairs for the US Army Pacific, told Channel NewsAsia.

On Thursday, Colonel Eric Shirley, a Support Operations Officer assigned to the US Army's 8th Theater Sustainment Command, told reporters from ASEAN visiting the Pacific Command camp in Honolulu Hawaii that the US was considering Singapore as a "home base" for its logistics support operations in the region.

But the comments were "premature", said Col Nielson-Green on Friday.

"He was not speaking for the US Pacific Command," said the spokesman.

"In (Col Shirley's) comments, he misspoke in characterising the potential of future Logistics Support Vessel operations. Though the US Army is exploring locations throughout the region for logistics support operations, there has been no discussion with Singapore on this possibility."

The Director of Public Affairs also clarified that there are no plans for a new base in the Republic, calling Col Shirley's use of the term "base" Army terminology "with a very broad meaning".

"In this case, the Army is not looking to build new bases in Singapore," said Col Nielson-Green.

Every Chinese in Singapore will be happily collecting whatever intelligence and relayed back to their motherland, China. Chinese are Chinese anywhere. Indeed all technical information needed by China about any USA military system is readily available as long as such military systems are in contact with Chinese. Hopefully Singapore will quickly acquire the F35 or even the F45 for the RSAF .....

West Germany and later Germany did very well after the Americans fought the war and stay with them to their prosperity. Ditto for Japan and South Korea. So, there is a lot precedent for American interference.
