A gang has been arrested in southern China for selling tonnes of reprocessed used cooking oil from restaurants, according to a newspaper report.

The group’s leaders were a 45-year-old man and his 25-year-old nephew who collected restaurant waste in Guiyang in Guizhou province, the Guizhou City News said.

They sold about 30 tonnes of the “gutter oil”, according to the article.

The gang processed the oil in a yard in the city suburbs before transporting it to Hubei province for further processing. The oil was later mainly sold in central China.

The duo began their illegal business in November and sold the gutter oil for 2,000 yuan (HK$2,400) per tonne. That yielded a 600 yuan to 800 yuan profit per tonne, the report said.

The operation drew the attention of police when officers noticed dozens of oil buckets in a backyard. Officers also found two trucks fully loaded with oil slops.

The Making Of 'Gutter Oil'

Most of China's 'gutter oil' winds up in cheap restaurants and among street food vendors.

Strong possibility it might have been exported to sinkie land undetected for years especially to those eateries operated by the tiongs in Geylang and other places.

How to tell fresh oil apart from recycled oil when both are imported from China?

Now that they're arrested, what happens to the gang? Fine? Prison? Back to "work" after the court hearing? What's to prevent them and others from committing this again? What about the users who purchase (and use) the oil?

Cheers!

Collecting gutter oil? Same couple spotted pumping contents from sewers again in Jurong

The couple that was spotted pumping out contents from the sewers in Jurong previously was seen yet again doing the same yesterday (Feb 20) -- also in the Jurong area.

Stomper Bolicat, stumbling upon this last evening at about 6p.m., is worried about the possibility of 'gutter oil' being used in Singapore.

It is a method of making oil prevalent in China's street food stalls and restaurants, by processing from rubbish and the contents inside sewers.

Another Stomper Justin had previously sighted a couple collecting sewers' contents in Jurong on Feb 11. After having read that report, Stomper Bolicat recognises the couple he spotted as the same ones in the previous article.

In an email to Stomp, Bolicat wrote:

"Not the first time. Same couple spotted again at Third Lok Yang Road canteen, pumping out gutter oil from the sewers.
"Do you now fear what is used to cook the food we eat outside? This couple has already been spotted a few times in the west region of Singapore by others.
"They carry out their 'job', pumping the dirty oil with self-made tools from sewers infested with cockroaches.
"This is no laughing matter."
The Stomper observed the process, which took less than ten minutes.
The couple hastily kept their equipment and left in their lorry, packed with several plastic tanks of their loot.
He added:
"I regret not being able to take a picture of their vehicle's plate number for the police to investigate."
