Syria gets T90 Tanks to assist in Aleppo takeover
Monday, 14 December 2015

The Fourth Division of the Syrian army has been equipped with at least 6 modern T-90MS Tagil tanks, provided by the Russian Federation. Their function is to help the Syrian Arab Army advance in the southern province of Aleppo.

The exact date of their deployment in Syria is shrouded in mystery. Some say they have been on the ground since early September, other sources indicate their presence as a new development thanks to recent agreements between Damascus and Moscow, including rumors of a delivery of the S -300 to the Syrian Arab Republic.

The T-90MS and its outstanding capability to destroy incoming TOW and M79 missiles appears to be perfect for a theater of war like the one in Syria. In 4 and a half years of conflict, more than 9,000 BGM-71E3B TOW and M79 anti-tank systems have been introduced in the country. Their capability to easily penetrate T-55 and T-72 tanks is the main reason why the Syrian Arab Army has had so many problems gaining ground in the southern province of Aleppo.

The great advantage of the T-90MS is its reactive armor and defense systems. It comes equipped with reactive armor blocks like the Kontakt-5, and a system such as the Arena-3 that detects, intercepts and detonates missiles at a distance of 2-3 m from the target makes this tank unique and a much needed upgrade for the Syrian army’s capacity to achieve important victories on the ground.

Russia's Lethal T-90 Tank vs. ISIS' Captured M1 Abrams: Who Wins?

With Russia’s surprise move to deploy ground forces to Syria, the remote possibility that Russian forces might confront Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) operated M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks emerges.

According to numerous media reports, the Russian military has deployed a half dozen T-90 main battle tanks, 15 self-propelled heavy artillery pieces and thirty-five infantry fighting vehicles along with about 200 naval infantrymen—basically marines—into the war ravaged nation. The Russian forces appear to be building an airbase as a staging area to bring in additional military supplies for the beleaguered Syrian government.

While the chances of a direct confrontation between Russian forces in the area and ISIS operated armor are fairly remote, there is a small possibility that could happen. ISIS has destroyed or captured a number of the Iraqi Army’s 140 M1A1 SA Abrams tanks. While many of these tanks were destroyed using anti-tank missiles, at least a few were captured and may continue to be operated by the terrorist organization. Most of those Abrams tanks are probably operating in Iraq (if they are still functional), but it’s not completely inconceivable that ISIS might move some into Syria.

(Recommended: NATO's 5 Most Lethal Weapons of War)

So how would ISIS’ Abrams fare versus the best Russian-owned and operated tanks? Probably not very well—the Russian crews are professional soldiers, with proper training, tactics and a functional logistical train. ISIS, meanwhile, might have some veterans of Saddam Hussein’s army, but they aren’t exactly experts at employing an Abrams or even mechanized warfare in general given their past performance.

Unlike in previous encounters between Russian-built hardware and U.S.-built machines, the Soviet-built machines were generally export models that didn’t feature the most advanced equipment. Moreover, crew training, tactics, maintenance, spare parts availability and logistical support may have been subpar—like Saddam Hussein’s army when it faced off against the U.S. Army in the first Gulf War.

(Recommended: Russia's Most Lethal Warplane)

In this case, ISIS’ Abrams would be the export models that were sold to Iraq. While the M1A1 SA has many advanced features, it lacks the heavy depleted uranium armor matrix found on the U.S. Army’s own tanks. Further, the Iraqi Abrams were not equipped with features such as explosive reactive armor that would have helped those vehicles survive in combat against ISIS or other insurgent groups’ anti-tank missiles from various angles. But even then, the Iraqi Army is losing to ISIS not because of its equipment, but because it lacks the discipline, tactics, training and procedures to fight and win.

While ISIS likely has the motivation and discipline to put up a fight, what the group doesn’t have is the logistical train to operate the Abrams. The Abrams is a complex, maintenance intensive machine that requires a steady stream of spare parts and ammunition. Moreover, its 1500hp gas turbine engine also burns fuel at a rapid clip—so a steady supply of JP-8 fuel is a must. At the end of the day, the Abrams is designed to operate as part of a large conventional army—which ISIS is not.

(Recommended: 5 Russian Weapons of War America Should Fear)

ISIS is not a conventional fighting force—in many ways it’s a hybrid between a conventional army and an insurgency. While the group may use armor captured from Iraqi or Syrian stocks, it’s not going to employ tanks in massed armored formations like the U.S. Army or Russia. ISIS doesn’t have enough tanks or the training to undertake such an endeavor even if they can learn to operate an individual Abrams as a vehicle. Fighting as part of a conventional mechanized force is a lot more complicated than just learning operate a single vehicle—it takes a lot of coordination and training.

Overall, if there was an encounter between the Russian T-90s and group of ISIS operated Abrams, it’s likely that a force of trained Russian soldiers would prevail. The problem for the Russians is probably not going to be ISIS tanks but rather the hordes of ISIS soldiers armed with rocket-propelled grenades, anti-tank missiles and explosively formed penetrators that they might face-off against.

Smart of Russia to test their new tank in small batches under combat conditions in Syria. I expect to see further Russian equipment going there for battlefield testing. Its getting interesting now.

By design feature, killing model and Armour piercing (1100mm) ability this PRC HJ-12 is latest and most advanced. Once fired, even if the firer died also the missile will itself track and kill the target. It remembers how to recognize it't target apart from other nearby tanks. It can be fired from tiny confined space, without hurting the firer. It can plan it's own flight towards target, and before reaching rise up and then dive down on the weak point on top of turret hatch area. Ultra SMART. Fire and Forget.

The type of engine does not really make a difference, other then the M1 is a real gas guzzler even among tanks. It will remain to be seen whether the IS forces captured the latest depleted uranium 120mm APFSDS round for their M1.

theres tons of damaged M1 abrams lieing around in iraq with their covers popped and ammo cooked off,why the fuck do we need to use T 90?just use a bunch of kornets and RPGs and problem solved.and cheap too,one rocket only cost $50k compared to million dollar tank.

What you said is very true.

Today's tanks are no longer enjoying the FORTRESS advantage like old days. But this does not mean that it has absolutely no value. Yes, helicopters, aircrafts, other tanks, armored combat vehs, drones, infantry, militants, boats, very remote MLR, missiles, all can kill tanks easily these days, with a weapon weighing 10kg onwards. However tanks is still a very good tough terrain vehicle, all weather, stable, heavy weight bearing, carry heavy weapons and moves very well, as a mobile fire base. It can break obstacles, penetrate defense structures, with lowest possible casualty. When a tank got killed, there is typically just 2~3 inside, while it has potential of killing hundreds, when it's luck is good.

T-90 for example, has lots of defense against AP shells, rockets, anti-tank and other tank's guns, and missiles, not 100% kill-proof, but offer a versatile reliable mobile fire base and defense line breaker. if killed, just lost 3 guys inside. If did not get killed, it's broke fences, walls, barricades, barb wires, mine fields, blasts away machine gun pits, fox-holes, buildings where enemies are firing from, bunkers, fire bases, fortifications, kill other tanks and vehicles, clear obstacles, gun away counter attackers, gives speed and cover to advancing or withdrawing friends, throw smoke screens, throw flames etc.

Not so useless right?

T-90 has active automatic defense system to blow away incoming shells or missiles, it has also laser defense system automatically blinding enemies equipments and eyes, by firing destructive laser, as it detect a threat engaging or aiming at it.

Shtora (Russian: ?????, "curtain") is an electro-optical active protection system or suite for tanks, designed to disrupt the laser target designation and rangefinders of incoming anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). The system is mounted on the Russian T-80 and T-90 series tanks, the Ukrainian T-84 and the Serbian M-84AS. The existence of Shtora was revealed in 1980 by Adolf Tolkachev.[2]

Shtora-1[3] is an electro-optical jammer that disrupts semiautomatic command to line of sight (SACLOS) antitank guided missiles, laser rangefinders and target designators. Shtora-1 is a soft-kill, or passive-countermeasure system. The system was shown fitted to a Russian main battle tank during the International Defense Exposition, held in Abu Dhabi in 1995. The first known application of the system is the Russian T-90 main battle tank, which entered service in the Russian Army in 1993. It is also available on the BMP-3M infantry fighting vehicle.

Hey you fucking retard! How many tanks got roasted before your Trophy system gets into the market? This system is only on the market recently and before that most were roasted. Also, it won't be long before a new weapon is developed to counter this trophy system and then your tank become a sitting duck again.

The ways the tanks are being used in lots of these Syrian footages shows clearly that they are using tanks quite wrongly in this war, a wrong operation model and organization had made them vulnerable to urban militants. This is the fault of commanders and military advisors, it should be corrected by re-training and re-organization.

You can see in these footages, there is no other vehicles nor soldiers in the operation except a small bunch of tanks, rather isolated from own forces, no supporting fire, no observers, no communications, no air support, no drone nor other reconnaissance. That's why resulted in losses and exposed tanks to being killed. There is almost nothing but few tanks deep into an area that they have no information at all, no idea where are enemies and what are their status or movement. Their poor plans seem to be just blindly posing a threat to provoke fire, and by that chance to kill some enemies or just do harassment on them, blindly looking for engagement. The militants adopted a hide and ambush tactic rather clever and they can manage to kill some tanks but not really effectively. In a way they are not tracking and informing each other where are tanks and giving firers order to move to best position to kill. The firer also just chance upon their kills only.

The tanks crew does not have very good sights in the urban environment, their weapons mostly shoots straight and they are confined in a veh peeping out very limited views. Hence there are too much chance for enemies to be moving very close and ambushing very near. The line of sight and nearly straight trajectory weapons meet obstetrical and obstructions very closely and in almost every angle. Tanks advantage is at flat open range or deserts, where tank crews can easily see and shoot everything within miles, enemies can not even come close, and tanks can move faster than infantry in that environment. In Urban area tanks speed is slow, have to tactically move ultra slow, to gain time for very difficult observation. Even spending the painful time, there are far too many concealments that tanks can not see nor shoot. The enemy can be just 5meters away behind a thin wall, you have no idea at all. Tank crew can not see nor hear them.

Israeli tanks operates in similar environment but much more correctly, with armor infantry or infantry, and with helicopter in good communication. Targets can be spotted and reported and killed, threats can be identified and warned in collaboration cover and compensate each other. A anti-tank firer exposes himself to kill a tank, regardless weather successful or not there should be infantry or helicopter spotting him and killing him, instead of giving him a peace of mind to continue to ambush around there.

Tank is a good tool of harassment to militant groups in urban area, if you move fast with supporting armor infantry or infantry. Roam around few block fire here and there to panic the militants, let infantry observe, see and hear and locate them when they KPKB about tanks attacking. Infantry should kill them when have chance, if not than precisely inform tanks where to attack. In these video, the militants KPKB, but tanks can not hear them. Don't know where they are at all. As they stood still to make more observation, militants took that chance to kill them already.

See? I am a very talented warrior leader, know how to observe and analyses faultlessly, organize and adapt and kill brutally to win.
