How does Google Calendar know my flight and hotel bookings ?

I have been using Chrome browser to book my budget airline tickets and hotels via Agoda website.

I have recently found out that these dates are automatically recorded in my Google calendar even though I don't remember having input anything into my Google calendar. How exactly does Google manage to find out ?

On one particular occasion, I booked directly with the hotel and they just replied with an email confirming the reservation of the room - without payment or anything. Again, Google managed to record the dates of my booking and updated my Google calendar.

It's getting pretty scary !

it is because your google (android) is linked to your email (gmail).
You also received SIA email update for all your flight booking.

actually it is also linked to amazon updates if you purchase from amazon

I'm not talking about the link between computer and mobile phone via Gmail.

I'm wondering how Google picked up the information when I didn't update it anywhere. Did they just pluck the dates from the SUBJECT of any Gmail communications ?

It is well known that Google spies on you. That is why if you value your privacy, you should minimize the use of google application e.g. chrome, gmail, youtube,....

I avoid using chrome, gmail,... I do use Youtube but do not have a youtube account

How does Google Maps know my flight information?
I looked at Google Maps today, and it, as always showed the airport nearby. However, it also had the date and arrival time of my return flight home for a short trip I'm taking this week.

I did not book the flight, so it is not connected to my Google account in anyway. It is not on my Google Calendar. The itineraries that I had are all pdf spreadsheets, so there is no way that the data could have been culled from e-mails from airlines. My frequent flyer numbers aren't even attached to the flight.

ANS:

Did you use gmail to receive the confirmation of the flight? If yes, now you know why. Google loves to read all your mails so that it can show you the right advertisements. Showing the flight information just a favor in return.

You do know that some hotels allow you to reserve without paying first and you pay only when u check in with them instead of paying earlier. I guess this is for customers who cannot make up their minds to stay at a particular hotel.

I have tens of gmail accounts. All privacy settings can be tweaked here -> http://myaccount.google.com/?pli=1

I made sure that i disable almost all of them including Location, contacts, privacy, Google+ blah blah..

Unless u are searching for drugs and child porn, there's no need to be sneaky.

Google for best results, Duck Duck Go for best privacy if u do not want to be tracked.

Well, I have grown familiar with this particular hotel and they are happy to have me book with them directly instead of via agoda. I'm not sure how much commission agoda charges, but based on google search it's rumored to be around 25%, which is quite a shocker to me.

As for other others, I did call up a hotel in HK and they allowed me to reserve a room but they required details of my credit card.

You're an idiot if you use any google products.

I configure my own mailboxes, search behind "disconnect search" and stay away from google maps, street view etc.

i do not know why you are so worried about all the google products and function..life is so convenient with it..

if you are not doing anything that is very "controversial" , you are all right to go.
