In his report on Project Chrome, Cringely says that those affected by the cuts "will all be gone by the end of February". He said that while there would be a significant number of jobs lost in the US, the axe would fall on all of IBM's locations around the world.

IBM's problems stem from the fact that customers are moving their storage infrastructure to the cloud, meaning they no longer need physical data centres on site and therefore don't need service contracts with IBM to help maintain them - a business which accounts for two-thirds of IBM's revenue.

In light of all these financial issues and job culling, it was announced that Rometty would be pocketing a $4.5 million bonus plus millions in company stock for her performance in 2015.

After more than 25 years since Sun Microsystems first brought the idea that the Internet is the computer and multiple evolution from service delivery platform to today's cloud. Cloud is becoming a reality and it is killing everyone in the IT market while it slowly resets all other linked economies with poison.

IBM has always been labour intensive with their profitable consulting business and it is cyclical. Nothing to do with cloud as it too requires expensive consulting to integrate legacy systems.

With better and improved security measures, Cloud computing and Cloud storage will be the way to go for the next few years.
Unless they are dealing with very confidential information like R&D, critical database or whatever, we've seen companies these days don't really need to have their own data center.
All they need is a secured internet connection to those big hosting companies that can host their servers, web site, domain name, applications and even storage etc.

A new abnormal seems to be making its presence on the horizon. Once great industry titans like IBM, HP, Nokia and Motorola are falling down like dominoes in the ever changing technological landscape.

The landscape is constantly changing even as cloud computing, B2B, B2C businesses are remaking the old economies into a completely different paradigm of doing business. Even giants like Walmart are being overwhelmed by Internet retailers like Amazon & Ebay.

What will happen if we are still trapped in our old thinking like the IBM mainframe ?

Better buy McDonald's stocks as people still need to eat food that are convenient and affordable regardless of economic boom or recession. The global taxi industry is rapidly being replaced by Uber.
