You are completely correct that British and western imperialist harmed China. In fact during Qing dynasty, China had everything they needed in the world they were the richest nation for most of history. British were the roots of these problem.


However inferior Chinese leadership of modern times are also to blame for the way Chinese are today. Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Deng Xiaoping, Song Qingling, Li Xiannian are all responsible for making Chinese people inferior. Until there is a huge improvenment I would never call myself Chinese since they already ruined the image of overseas Chinese.
