SINGAPORE: Despite appeals to shoppers to not take trolley baskets and shopping carts home, they still go missing, according to some local supermarket chains.

A spokesperson with Sheng Siong said on average, the supermarket chain lost about 180 trolley baskets each month in 2015. Cold Storage, which also operates the chain of Giant supermarkets in Singapore, said its Giant outlet in Jurong East lost about 600 trolley baskets last year. It has since made a police report over the losses.

The company said there have been similar cases at other outlets, but the problem tapered off when customers were reminded not to take the baskets away.

Even as supermarkets deal with the issue of trolley baskets going missing, the problem of shopping carts going missing continues. This is despite notices in supermarkets that remind customers that shopping carts are for use within the store or mall, and are not to be trundled away.

FairPrice said that over the past two years, about 1,000 shopping carts go missing from its stores each month. It said it costs S$150,000 a year to recover and repair, or to replace the carts.

Sheng Siong loses about 90 shopping carts a month, and together with the trolley baskets, said that losses come up to S$10,000.

Alamak, there is a technology that locks up the cart wheels when it is pushed beyond a certain distance from the monitor. Supermarkets are just cheap.

These mega supermarkets are really cheapskates.

So many other countries's supermarkets already installed wheel cramping devises should the trolleys go beyond short distance from the supermarket, say to carpark or road-side pickup points. Cheap and easy solution and save all the cost of trolley replacements.

What are they complaining about? They can also claim PIC if they had not already exhausted their limit!

Mama shops and provision shops are killed by Fairprice. Back then, when FP prices higher than provision shops, they would send a team down to the provision shop to force their prices up. The when they grew big enough and their collective buying became bigger, they under cut prices. Provision shops also die cock stand.

sheng siong also started in the hdb heartlands but they took off, blame it on the provision shops lack of prowess and business acumen and ability to adapt to changing market forces and consumer tastes.
