I simply do not understand my father! His obstinacy is so overwhelming as he ages. Change is regarded as "waste of money" and he seems to have developed a "disease" affecting men ∼ Creatures of Habit!

I bought him many trendy and nice polo shirts from Bangkok ∼ and yet to date, he refuses to wear them and continue wearing his UGLY batik shirts and those UGLY short sleeves funny pattern collared shirts.

He says Batik and his other shirts are more "cooling" and he "arrogantly" declares that he looks better in those CRAP than the Dri-fit Nike golf polo shirts and others which I bought for him.

I have nothing against batik shirts, BUT, to me, those men who wear BATIK shirts all the time reminds me "Lau Ah Pek" type who would frequent "undesirable" places.

That's not all ∼ I bought him a pair of nice and light GEOX for his morning walks. He said I am wasting money. He insisted his taiwanese made, god knows what crap ∼ Paichi brand shoes bought from the neighborhood stores are better and cheaper, and costs a fraction of the GEOX I bought for him.

He says I am wasting money!!!

Hell! He is getting on my nerves with his obstinacy and idiosyncrasies :(

How do I get him to change and not become a Creature of Habit?

it's ok, sister. i've been wearing my cheapo jimbo shorts and v-neck t's since the dawn of time. they're perfect for the hot and humid climate in sg, allowing skin and organs to breathe and sometimes expand.

Hello Brother Eat. Those shorts in your pics are ok as long aa you wear in the comfort of your own home. What I am displeased about is his refusal to get out of his stupid Batik wear when he goes out.

All the great world leaders love Batik. Good taste is timeless.

What's wrong with wearing what you like:confused:
Last time I would see Sporeans wear clothes with labels on the outside. Obviously these people wanted to advertise the name brand

Nowadays comfort has become more important than advertising. Have you ever asked your father why he like batik:confused:
In Jakarta there is a store that specialises in selling batik clothes & they are not cheap. Instead of getting upset you could find him a new expensive shirt:wink:

batik shirts are dress-shirts too. they are considered semi-formal attire in state or official functions involving luncheon, cocktail, and dinner. my only batik shirt is a gift from an indonesian honcho who travelled across 8000 miles of ocean just to meet me. to this day, i still treat it with honor and only wear it when there's an official function involving malaysians and indonesians in summer. there's an aura of prestige yet comfort when it involves batik.

He only wears batik when he goes out. I want him to have a variety of wear. That's all.

I can bet with you if I buy a Batik for him and he will say I got cheated, don't know how to choose, bad quality and all that egotistical stuff. Old Man!

I think you underestimate your dad. If you are ever in Jakarta, get him a nice shirt from a place called Batik Keris. I bet he would appreciate it.
Better still take him on a holiday & let him choose his own shirt. Batik Keris specialises in all things batik.

Last time they also had an outlet at the Jakarta airport.

i can't wait to wear it during summer, but i need to preserve it for important ocassions only. the favorite shirt that i wear on holiday in the tropics is a floral from hawaii. it has been with me for over 20 years. i can sleep, shit and have sex in it. :p

Claire, it's unrealistic to expect your old man to change his "ecosystem" -on old habits, including his comfy dressing.
Old habits die hard, and most of us are creatures of habit (including our own idiosyncracies).

Perhaps "lobbying" through your mom may work (if she's got his ear). Maybe all's not lost on your hopes of new wardrobe yet.
Not unlike my obstinate mom, who balks at my organising her meds in a pill box. Even after wrong dosage and kena warded

If your dad has his health and his mental faculties, you should consider yourself blessed. Not all of us are so lucky.

What he wears is of no consequence whatsoever.

Just three comments:

1. It's a lost cause: old people are set in their ways. You'll be too, when you grow old.

2. You'd rather your Dad wore something he likes, than tried to please others by wearing shirts that he dislikes. Give me a man who's true to himself and comfortable in his own skin anytime over a guy who pays undue attention to his looks and dressing in an effort to impress others.

3. Hope your 'obsession' with his attire doesn't translate into your judging people by what they wear. It doesn't really matter what a person puts on, as long as he's comfortable in it and he's dressed appropriately for the occasion (e.g. no slippers and shorts to a wedding banquet). At the end of the day, taste in fashion is decidedly subjective. Manners, not clothes, maketh a man.
