Because the story of Jesus is one of hope. For people who have nothing to live for, forsaken, abandoned, cast out of society, the only thing they have is hope. And the story of Jesus gives them that. For those who belong in the other end of social heirachy, belief in Jesus gives them happiness when they do good, contribute to charity, contribute in humane acts. For children, the bible has many enriching and wholesome stories. In it, good triumphs over evil. A humble man from a low social background is the king of all the kings, despite his simpleness, he is kind, forgiving, compassionate, despite his humbleness, he is generous, loving. The bible and the story of Jesus has become a handbook of humanity. It is more than a book of theological folklore, but a book of guidance, which has brought happiness and comfort to many. Jesus may not be a real person who walked on earth, but he is a man who has set a standard for humanity to emulate.
