- Greeks represented the intelligentsia, the cradle of civisilization, and hence learning, critical thought.
- The Roman emperor, seeing the growing popularity of Christianity, saw it politically wise to adopt Christianity as the official religion, thereby avoiding a mass Christian rebellion.
