2 investigated for lodging false police reports

Wednesday, Nov 25, 2015

SINGAPORE- A 22-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman are under investigation by the police for lodging false reports of robbery in two separate incidents.

In the first case, the man lodged a report claiming that he was assaulted and robbed of his mobile phone, cash and jewellery by two unknown men, one of whom was supposedly armed with a knife. However, inconsistencies were found in the information provided by the man after extensive inquiries were conducted in the alleged crime scene.

According to a police statement, the man eventually admitted that he had lost the items, but lodged a report and provided false information, in the hope that the police would take the loss more seriously.

In the second case, the woman alleged that she was threatened with a knife and robbed of cash amounting to around $900 by two unknown men at Jurong West St 42.

It was later established that the woman had gambled away her money and lodged the report to account to her family members.

Investigations against the two suspects are ongoing.

Anyone who is convicted for giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant may be punished with a jail term of up to one year, with a fine which may extend to $5,000, or both.

The police said that resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information.
