PSA In Panic Attacks as NOL May be sold to Maersk and CMA CGM

Dear brothers and sisters,

just heard this from PSA Commercial team and they are panic.

NOL may be sold to Maersk and CMA CGM. However Maersk terminal is t Second Link Tanjong Pelepas and CMA CGM terminal is at Port Kelang.

If deal is concluded and NOL goes to either Maersk / CMA CGM, PSA will retrench 10% of its current staffs, especially those who work in the terminal.

69.9% of Singaporeans wants this wonderful PAP performance. Wunderful ...

nothing to panic.... just sell off the port for seaside resort homes and shopping centre for the rich ftrash

Me thinks they already prepared this in advance. They say when lease for the land at tanjong pagar port ends in around 2027, they going to turn it into another MBS with casinos, hotels and high class restaurants to boot. SG is no longer a great shipping nation.

The irony now is that a Pioneer company, started almost when we became independent and started and owned by the taxpayers of singapore will now not even be using its Own singapore port and instead use the port and facilities of our biggest competitor. Thank u very much, Fucking PAP.

That is one of the major weaknesses of the government's so called merit system and "scholars are considered to to be superior, whether in the armed forces, police, civil service or GLC's"

I recall that when I was in NS, I had the perception that many CO's and Brigade Commanders were very reluctant to give a "scholar" a less than Outstanding Performance Report, otherwise, the CO or Brigade Commander has to justify and provide further explanation, because the scholar officers were deemed to be outstanding.
In another practical scenario, may be the CO's and Brigade Commanders are aware that in less than 5 or 10 years, those scholar officers may be their superior.

I know of a fellow officer (he was a LTA and I was a 2LT at that time) at the Brigade HQ, whose promotion to CPT was delayed because he was "not outstanding" (he was not concerned),
and heard of another SAFOS who intentionally did not perform at the "outstanding" level, and remained a CPT until the expiry of his bond period, because his philosophy was that by doing so,
it will reduce his opportunity cost to seek gainful employment when he ROD.

It double whammy for psa since their major client MSC just shifted their operations to ptp. Major shipping lines are in fact going through the process of consolidating by forming alliance or merging. By doing so they will have greater bargaining power with port operators.

Selling Nol might be a big mistake. In fact I do think it will be better to hire people with industry knowledge to turn things round than to parachute retire saf general.

The top 3 container lines in the world gave up Singapore as their transhipment hub in favour of Malaysia.
With sale of NOL APL (in top 10) also gone.
Other top 10 listers like evergreen China shipping also abandon Sg....I wonder when Psa will face jurong port's fate of selling off their cranes

this is the first time i heard of employees purposely not wanting to perform well so as to get out of the company. i guess they can't wait to finish that damn contract and collect back their pink IC.

If only they hire the right fellow to run NOL and acquire more shipping lines instead of selling NOL . This is one way to ensure the survivability of psa in the long run.

Alternatively gov should let major shipping lines acquire a stake in our strategic asset like psa. If you tie their interests here then there will be additional pull factor to berth in psa.

That means they think that casinos and hotels add more money than shipping to their pockets lah. Of course, it means jobs may be lost to Sinkies but they don't care, right? By then, every country in the region will also go into casino and hotels lah. Lets see whether what they think is right or not?

They will build high end condos there for rich FTs......private beaches and yacht berths included.
Unless you work as butler and the ladies work as maids for the FTs.....else you no chance to enjoy that scenery

yes, back in 2012 when i was touring the docks off tanjong pagar and pasir panjang, my handlers (guides) confirmed moving the unsightly container port to tuas. when i inspected the construction at tuas this year, part of it is already in operation and various multi-storey warehousing projects are underway in ulu pandan in west coast. 40-foot container trucks can drive up 4 stories to offload goods in these modern warehouses. the old harbor area will be auctioned off for high end development. it makes cents, oops i mean sense, as there's more money per sq. foot for wealthy residents and tenants to live and rub salt on sinkies' loser status than moving and storing bulk goods in such valuable tracts. the shipping business has been relegated to nuisance status, not a necessary means of survival for sg anymore.

news out already

In an announcement to the Singapore Exchange, Singapore-listed Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) confirmed that it is in preliminary separate discussions with two potential suitors, namely CMA-CGM (CMA) and AP Moeller-Maersk.

NOL is Southeast Asia’s largest shipping line, handling 5.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in financial year 2014 (FY14) and 3.7 million TEUs in the nine months of FY15 (9MFY15). We believe that Westports could be an indirect beneficiary should CMA’s bid is successful. Recall that CMA is Westports’ largest customer.

If CMA’s bid for acquiring NOL is successful, we could see a rising utilisation of Westports or the Asian-North America and Asia-Europe services of the enlarged CMA-NOL group. While it is difficult to quantify the exact amount of containers that will be shifted due to service adjustments, we estimate that a 20% shift in cargo from the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) could increase Westports’ FY16 throughput volume by 430,000 TEUs or 4.4% based on the annualised 9MFY15 cargo handled for the Asia-North America and Asia-Europe routes.

Currently, NOL utilises the PSA as its main port of call in the region with limited port calls made in Port Klang (only Intra-Asia and Oceanic routes). As an added incentive, the enlarged group would also benefit from lower container handling tariffs (50% cheaper) on top of a cheaper ringgit.

We maintain our FY15 and FY16 earnings estimates pending the actual announcement of the CMA-NOL merger. Our TP remains unchanged based on a discounted cash flow valuation (Weighted average cost of capital 7%; Terminal growth rate 2%).

We are positive on Westports in view of: i) better earnings visibility with tariff hikes fixed over the medium term, ii) geographical diversification with 70% exposure to transshipment business and iii) potential award of investment tax allowances in FY16 which could reduce Westports’ tax rate substantially from 24% to 16%.

I am hoping he does. President Scholars must be well-taken care of for life. I am hoping my son and daughter would join their ranks in a couple of years' time. It's every singaporean parents' dream for their children.

This is the problem with the patronage system. Its you and your children who are leeching and bleeding the system. Its the connection that gets you there, not your worth or contributions.

You scumbags are truly worthless. Cannot survive in a foreign country.

The ineptitude of the pappies is simply amazing...and yet sinkies do not care and still handed a mandate to them in GE2015.
