SINGAPORE: A 31-year-old Indian national was on Wednesday (Nov 18) sentenced to nine months in jail for molesting a flight stewardess while on board a SilkAir flight from India to Singapore in September.

Kizhakkumkkara Thomas Ajeesh also faced an additional charge for becoming “intoxicated to such an extent as to jeopardise the good order and discipline required on board an aircraft”, Deputy Public Prosecutor Allison Phua said.

The court heard that on Sep 9 at about 1.15am, Kizhakkumkkara began asking crew members for alcoholic drinks just after the flight took off from Trivandrum. He was served four glasses of whisky before becoming tipsy, and the supervising cabin crew instructed crew members not to serve any more alcohol to Kizhakkumkkara.

However, Kizhakkumkkara continued to badger the crew for alcohol, even getting up from his seat and approaching them in the back galley to ask for more drinks.

When the seatbelt sign was switched on, crew members told Kizhakkumkkara to fasten his seatbelt, but he continued his demands for more alcohol. A 26-year-old flight stewardess refused and as she was turning away to walk back to the galley, Kizhakkumkkara used his right hand to brush her breasts.

The woman screamed, telling Kizhakkumkkara not to touch her. Her colleague and another passenger witnessed the incident and shouted at Kizhakkumkkara to stop.

In court on Wednesday, Kizhakkumkkara apologised for his actions and admitted that although he had been drunk at the time, he was aware of his actions and is “remorseful”. He said his mother is ill in hospital and “no one is taking care” of his pregnant wife.

For molesting the woman, Kizhakkumkkara could have been jailed up to two years, caned and fined. For becoming intoxicated while on board a flight, Kizhakkumkkara could have been fined up to S$20,000 and jailed up to 12 months.
