SINGAPORE: The deputy chairman of property giant City Developments Limited (CDL) Kwek Leng Joo has died in his sleep at the age of 61, Channel NewsAsia understands.

He is the younger brother of billionaire Kwek Leng Beng, executive chairman of CDL and non-executive chairman of Hong Leong Asia.

Mr Kwek Leng Joo was appointed director of CDL in 1980 and was the managing director of CDL from January 1995 until assuming the role of deputy chairman in February last year, where he spearheaded the company's corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives.

A bio on CDL's website describes Mr Kwek as a dedicated advocate for corporate social responsibility (CSR) for over two decades. He was president of the Singapore Compact for CSR, a national CSR society and country focal point for the United Nations (UN) Global Compact in Singapore.

"His vision has established CDL’s reputation as a leading green building champion and a forerunner in CSR, raising the bar for Singapore’s real estate industry and driving change for the building sector," CDL stated on its website.

Mr Kwek was also president of the Singapore Chinese Chamber Of Commerce & Industry from 1993-1997 and 2001-2005 and a member of the MediaCorp Editorial Advisory Panel.

RIP....money is not the greatest thing on earth after all.

rubbish he can still buy a stairway to heaven.

There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

What's the point of having so much money but can't enjoy...as we go high tech and modern, our health going downwards....lol

Life is unpredictable, enjoy while we can and within limits...

Hi Kraft, go and do what you want to do.
Go out with divorcee, have a good time or whatever.
You only live once and anyone could die in their sleep....
Of course not advocating throwing caution to the wind.......

going for jogging later, like to feel the perspiration dripping and breathing......it makes one feel alive.

Big Brother wanted to keep him together in the company, give younger brother a post and give him salary.

Are you jealous ?

He is still young. Money don't buy you time.

Precisely. Tell this to people who are jealous of others wealth and spread malicious lies of them. One minute we are alive and next minute may be dead in the wrong place wrong time. Don't be like nasty and callous people who actually cheered when wealthy people - who did no harm to you - died.

Thats not the problem of money, thats the problem of medical science,im sure one day 100 years in the future, there will be medicine and medical machines that can cure any illness or disease and regenerate human cells,we can even fix headshot bulletwounds, when that time comes the rich will live for 2000 years while the poor breed and die like rabbits.

A good boss. A humble and friendly man who did not hesitate to join his staff for a bowl of "Fei Fei" wanton mee at Joo Chiat when he could be dining at Compass Rose. A good man. RIP, Joo.
