A female hawker was caught on video switching a bag of dates for lower quality fruit when her customer turned his back. Hong Kong’s Ming Pao reported that the video has caught the attention of Western social media sites, racking up tens of thousands of views and 12,000 shares. A number of foreign Netizens commented on the video, “This is China.”
The video shows the female street hawker selling green dates. She has several extra bags of dates hidden in a large basket. A customer comes up to the stand and she helps him pick out the dates himself, so that he can choose good-quality fruit. However, when she has the chance, she furtively switches his bag out for a bag of similar size.
Foreign Netizens guessed that the dates in the pre-packaged bags were of lower quality than the ones displayed. Others said that the dates were already cheap, and the hawker is morally wrong to cheat her customers for such a small profit.
One foreign Netizen said frankly that they know that Mainland shopkeepers are often dishonest with their marketing, and that they would choose to patronize big companies instead to avoid being cheated.
