Taiwan and China to hold historic summit in Singapore

_86490942_taiwan_china976.jpg

Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou will meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Singapore on Saturday - the first ever meeting between leaders of the two sides.

Both said the talks would focus on relations across the Taiwan Straits.

China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since 1949, when the Nationalist government fled to the island after defeat by the Communists.

However, ties have improved since President Ma took office in 2008.

Analysis: Cindy Sui, BBC News, Taipei

This meeting, less than three months before Taiwan's elections, is a sign of how concerned China is that the significantly improved ties of recent years could be jeopardised if the pro-independence opposition party's candidate becomes president. Opinion polls show Tsai Ing-wen is leading - a big worry for Beijing.

Ms Tsai has said she welcomes dialogue with Chinese leaders, but Beijing has refused to meet her, indicating it does not trust her.

She was a minister in charge of developing policy toward mainland China under the previous administration, which angered Beijing by trying to work towards formal independence.

Mr Xi may believe he can sway Taiwanese voters but this could backfire. While some voters who want to maintain stable relations may heed his words, they may offend Taiwanese voters who are already worried that Beijing will have increasing influence over Taiwan if the candidate from President Ma's party is elected.

And this could hurt, rather than help, the party favoured by Beijing.

The two leaders are expected to handle the meeting in a delicate manner. Mr Ma's office has emphasised no agreements will be signed and no joint statement will be issued.

during the KMT-CCP leaders meet 1945, according to USA Ambassador to China General Patrick Hurley (1944-1945 ), Mao Zedong was very worried about taking a plane to Chongqing because he was scared Chiang would shoot the plane down. Mao got Hurley to accompany him on the plane ride because he deduced that Chiang wouldn't dare to shoot down the plane with the USA Ambassador inside it. Mao also got Hurley's promise to guarantee the safety of him and his entourage in case Chiang arrests them in Chongqing. that was ball-less Mao Zedong.

Singapore's Shangri-La Hotel.

Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will split the bill for their dinner in Singapore on Saturday, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Deputy Minister Wu Mei-hung (吳美紅) said Wednesday.

The two leaders are expected to have dinner together after their meeting in Singapore, and Ma will fly back to Taiwan immediately after dinner, according to Wu.

"It's not about who will be whose guest at the dinner, but about having dinner together," said Wu.

She said the two sides will also split the cost of renting the venue at Singapore's Shangri-La Hotel for the Ma-Xi meeting.

The meeting in Singapore on Nov. 7 will begin with opening statements by Ma and Xi in a session that will be open to the press, followed by a closed-door discussion. The two leaders will hold separate press conference after the meeting and then will have dinner together, according to the MAC.

Ma, Xi to address each other as 'mister' in Singapore meet

2015/11/04 19:41:29

201511040042t0001.jpg

Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) When the top leaders of Taiwan and China meet for the first time in 66 years, they will address each other as "mister" to avoid any political implications, a senior Taiwanese official in charge of China affairs said Wednesday.

President Ma Ying-jeou and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are scheduled for the historic meeting in Singapore Nov. 7.

Hsia Li-yan (夏立言), the head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, said the goal of the upcoming meeting between Ma and Xi is to consolidate the current peace and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait.

"The meeting of the leaders of the two sides of the strait will demonstrate the two sides' determination to maintain peace and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and create a new milestone in the development of cross-strait relations," he said at a news conference.

Asked in what capacity will the two leaders meet in a third country, Hsia said Ma will attend the meeting as "the leader of Taiwan," and Xi as "the mainland's leader," adding that they will address each other as "mister."

Ma and Xi will each deliver opening remarks before the meeting, and will hold respective news conferences after the meeting is over, he said.

In holding the meeting, the two sides will stick to the principle of an equal footing and mutual respect, he went on.

The meeting will not touch upon political negotiations, no agreements will be signed, and no joint statement will be issued after the meeting, he added.

"From our point of view, the meeting between the leaders of both sides of the strait is conducive to cross-strait peace and to maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait," he said.

Both sides will use the meeting as an opportunity to strengthen communication on major cross-strait issues, he said, adding that it is an important step in the full institutionalization of the development of cross-strait relations, he added.

China-Taiwan Summit: A High-Stakes Gamble for Xi Jinping, Ma Ying-jeou

The first meeting of the leaders of China and Taiwan since 1949 brings political risks for both sides

By TE-PING CHEN, Updated Nov. 4, 2015 10:10 a.m. ET

BEIJING—Chinese President Xi Jinping’s plan to meet with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou for the first time reflected concerns in Beijing that elections on the democratically ruled island will push it further from mainland China’s orbit.

The meeting—the first since the two sides split in 1949 after the Chinese civil war—is politically risky for both sides. There are few objectives more central to the Communist Party than reunification with Taiwan, which it regards as a renegade province. Already criticized for his handling of the economy, Mr. Xi can’t afford to appear to deviate from that position.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ma’s policy of engagement with Beijing has contributed to the ruling Kuomintang’s sinking popularity among Taiwanese, and while the meeting gives Mr. Ma prominence in his final months as president, it could sink his party further in January elections.

The historic summit Saturday at Singapore’s Shangri-La Hotel will involve a 20-minute private meeting, according to Taiwan’s official Central News Agency, to be followed by dinner.

China and Taiwan have coexisted in mutual unease—and sometimes outright hostility—for the past 66 years, since former Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek fled with his troops after being defeated by Mao Zedong’s communists. In 1992, the two governments tacitly agreed on the notion of “One China,” that includes Taiwan, though both sides left vague how it would be defined.

马汗全席(习)?

I see three groups of choices for food since Singapore is a foodie place:

Luxurious
1. Shark's fin
2. Buddha jump over the wall

Singapore-lish
1. Chilli crab
2. Chicken rice
3. Bak Kut Teh

Unique
1. Turtle soup
2. Fried crocodile meat

Maybe more of Singapore-lish or Unique food since they would have their own Luxurious food back home. Surely they can get the best shark's fin or Buddha jump over the wall there. Maybe turtle soup since that was probably found in the ancient 马汗全席.

Loong should treat them to Bak Kut Teh, tell them it have to be boiled for hours, unlike them so lucky turn on tap can have pork soup.

Singapore is not a neutral place. They should meet in Switzerland.

Agree Switzerland is more neutral than Singapore. But the Switzerland is an ang moh country.

China and Taiwan are Chinese and they view their conflict as family matters. OK, Singapore is not part of the Greater China Family. But we are the only majority ethnic Chinese nation other than Greater China. So they settled their family matter at a "cousin's"place.
