PM: Why can’t Malaysia give BR1M since Singapore has cash aid too?

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak defended today the Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (BR1M) cash handout, pointing out that Singapore also has cash assistance policies.
Najib said Putrajaya was only looking after the interests of lower income groups and those in rural areas burdened by rising living costs.
“If Singapore can give cash aid, why can’t Malaysia also give out BR1M?” Najib said in a speech at the Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) conference here.
“It’s not just about skyscrapers and highways. Those in the rural areas, they need our help too,” the prime minister added.
Najib said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman told him last night that Singapore also gave cash relief for qualified Singaporeans to be banked into their Central Provident Fund (CPF), which he said was no different from BR1M.
“Kurup is one of the ministers who always reminds me that our strength is our rural voters, so we have to ensure rural development is given high priority.
“We understand their struggles with the rising cost of living so we want to respond to them. Some people are saying we should not be giving out BR1M, but why not? They should not be angry for nothing,” Najib added.
In Budget 2016, Putrajaya has increased its cash handout from RM950 to RM1,000 for households earning RM3,000 and below, while those with incomes between RM3,001 and RM4,000 would also receive an increased handout of RM800 from RM750.
The quantum for single individuals aged 21 and above with monthly income not exceeding RM2,000 has also been raised, from RM350 to RM400. A new category has also been created for those earning less than RM1,000 a month, who would now receive a pay-out of RM1,050.
BR1M assistance is expected to benefit 4.7 million households and 2.7 million single individuals with an allocation of RM5.9 billion.
