MALACCA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A homemade bomb exploded at the ATM kiosk of a bank in Ayer Keroh, in the Malaysian state of Malacca, damaging it.

Three masked men in a luxury car were earlier seen placing two homemade devices at the ATM kiosk at about 2am on Tuesday (Oct 13).

One of the bombs detonated, causing damage to the kiosk.

The police bomb squad removed the other explosive device at 9.50am.

Malacca's police chief, Deputy Comm Wira Chuah Ghee Lye, said three masked men were seen in the bank's closed-circuit television footage acting suspiciously at the scene of the crime.

He said the total losses are still being assessed.

MALACCA: An automated teller machine (ATM) was bombed on Tuesday (Oct 13) morning in the Malaysian state of Malacca, with robbers fleeing with a sum of money.

Malacca police chief Chuah Ghee Lye said at least two people were believed to be behind the incident, which occurred about 2am in Ayer Keroh, and that police were investigating to ascertain the amount of money missing from the machine.

"Another bomb did not explode and we are checking if it was used for backup or left behind,” he said. Mr Chuah said initial investigations revealed that the culprits were experts.

"The way the suspects placed the bomb show they have a certain level of expertise,” he said. “There had been attempts to use bombs prior to this incident, but the bombs did not tear the machine apart.”

Mr Chuah said instructions have now been issued to all district police chiefs to step up patrols in their respective areas to avoid a similar incident. On the bomb that was found at the scene, Mr Chuah said police exploded it at 10.25am as a safety measure.

He said the police will view footage of closed-circuit television in the vicinity to identify individuals and vehicles entering and leaving the ATM premises.

Meanwhile, Melaka Tengah district police chief Shaikh Abdul Adzis Shaikh Abdullah said initial investigations revealed that a pipe bomb was used to rip open the ATM machine.

"The second bomb that was found was still active and believed to have misfired in the incident," he said, adding police have also taken measures to ensure the location is now safe.

The site reports that criminals pump the cash dispensers with propane, which they then ignite—in the process tearing the machines apart with brute force. The explosions can send debris up to 50 meters from the ATM.

It is an ultra HUAT business. SG got so much more ATMs everywhere and mata are so coward and useless. Especially when you got bombs, they will flee 100X faster than from Race Course Road Ah Neh RIOTS.
