The solution for PAP desire of 'dignity' is not $$$, but to have more capable opposition in parliament.
MP Lim Wee Kiak said: "If the annual salary of the Minister of Information, Communication and Arts is only $500,000, it may pose some problems when he discuss policies with media CEOs who earn millions of dollars because they need not listen to the minister's ideas and proposals. Hence, a reasonable payout will help to maintain a bit of dignity."
I doubt if the minister is any more respected now that his salary has been increased. This is because the intuitive CEO is able to see the similarities between Singapore and N Korea where the dear/ great leader's mandate is anywhere upwards of 99%; more akin to any other totalitarian/ authoritarian state where any petty is corruption superseded by systematic oppression.
Anybody able to appreciate 'How the the PAP abused its mandate, created GRC system to terrorize Singapore.' will certainly view ANY PAP member with suspicion, let alone minister, and worse so if his basic salary is the highest in the world.
According to the 'Crony-capitalism index' [wiki]: a new measurement of crony capitalism designed by The Economist newspaper based on the “work by ...Morgan Stanley Investment Management, ... ” in 2014.. to measure if there is any increasing.. number of economic rent-seekers, to indicate whether.. the people from certain country ... are easily affected by crony capitalism.
It is thus for lack of check and balance, the legislative abuse of the GRC system of elections and the absurdity of laws excusing the conduct of by-elections for vacant MP seats that many PAP ministers have failed to earn their stripes, brought in at first on coat-tails viz supersized GRC system of (gerrymandering + walkover) elections, and then retaining their seats by avoiding by-elections and then gerrymandering even more; unlike many an MNC CEOs who have climbed the ladder, with experience from all over the world.
It is thus correct for Singaporean Ministers to feel themselves being ignored by well qualified MNC CEOs. The PAP's solution to the dilemma is however totally wrong.
The people of Singapore can thus do the minister a favour by voting in more opposition to keep the PAP on its toes: that will keep the PAP from proudly spreading its authoritarian ideas to the world.
MNC CEOs are correct in their ignoring of PAP ministers for now. People with experience and intuition can spot a rotten apple the moment they see one.
If the PAP will not improve the GRC system of elections to a fully SMC with NCMP and NMP provisions for ethnic minority inclusiveness, than the people must elect opposition MPs who can correct this PAP wrong. [Ref: 'NCMP scheme a great replacement for flawed GRC system of elections']
