A Hougang resident has filed a police report regarding Ms Lee Bee Wah’s appearance at a Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as the lunar Seventh Month Festival, getai performance in Nee Soon on 4 September,

The Online Citizen (TOC) has learnt.

Ms Lee is the People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate for Nee Soon GRC, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area before the dissolution of Parliament for the ongoing elections.

In a statement on 14 August, the Singapore Police Force had warned that election activities and Seventh Month Festival activities are to be kept separate. The onus is on Festival event organisers to ensure no speeches canvassing support for candidates or political parties take place at the events, according to the police statement.

The resident’s police report referenced a TOC article, which included a photograph by a member of the public showing Ms Lee on the getai stage with performers.

Following this article, another member of the public wrote in to TOC to say that the emcee had introduced Ms Lee and identified her as the PAP candidate for Nee
Soon GRC. The emcee then asked the audience to support Ms Lee and vote for her. During this time, Ms Lee shook hands with the audience. The incident took place over 20 minutes. Ms Lee was dressed in the all-white colours of the PAP at the event.

Since this incident on 4 September, citizens have reported the appearance of at least eight PAP candidates at various getai events around the country.

One incident saw PAP’s Mr Teo Ser Luck, Mr Gan Thiam Poh and Ms Sun Xueling, who are contesting Pasir Ris-Ponggol GRC as the incumbents, at a getai event at Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park on 5 September.

That same weekend, photographs of Mr Ang Hin Kee, the incumbent PAP candidate for the Ang Mo Kio GRC team led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, at another getai event surfaced online.

On 6 Sep, another TOC reader wrote in with photographs and a video of Mr Gan Kim Yong, Ms Low Yen Ling and Mr Zaqy Mohamed, three of the four PAP candidates for Chua Chu Kang GRC, at a “getai community event”, according to a man wearing a Residents’ Committee T-shirt.

At the time of writing, no known action has been taken by the police regarding these apparent contraventions of the 14 August police warning. There are no reports about candidates from other political parties appearing at getai events.

Why do Pappies always breach their own laws and rules.
May be they know that they would escape easily.
The biggest incident was by GCT, LHL appearance within 200 meters, and yet they escaped spectacularly.

Police: Keep getais and politics separate

AUGUST 14, 2015 BY KIRSTEN HAN IN NEWS, POLITICS · 8 COMMENTS

Getai performances will not be allowed before, during or after election rallies, said the police in a statement on Friday, emphasising that festivities for the Hungry Ghost Festival should be kept separate from politics.

The police also added that event organisers during the Hungry Ghost Festival “should ensure that no speeches intended to canvass support for election candidates and/or political parties are delivered (at) Seventh Month Festival events”.

The Hungry Ghost Festival months begins on Friday, and ends on 12th September, the date widely predicted to be designated Polling Day.

The Singapore Police Force also released new rules for the general elections, requiring rallies to be held at designated rally sites that will be made available.

The ballot method that was used for previous by-elections will be used, with a “give way” rule that would require political parties who have been allocated a site to defer to other parties wanting to use that same site at the same time the next day.

The “block ballot” system will also be used in constituencies where there are more contesting parties than there are rally sites. The final two or three nights of the hustings will be grouped together as a block, and candidates will only be allowed to apply for one site on one night within that block.

Details for balloting and allocation will be released after the issue of the Writ of Elections.

PAP candidate at getai during election?

SEPTEMBER 4, 2015 BY THEONLINECITIZEN IN NEWS · 31 COMMENTS

A member of the public sent the photo below to The Online Citizen (TOC) apparently showing the candidate for Nee Soon GRC, Lee Bee Wah, on stage at what is said to be a getai, the nightly event to commemorate the Seventh Month Festival.

TOC understands that the incident took place on Friday evening.

The opposition Workers’ Party, which is contesting the constituency in the elections, had also been conducting its rally at the Yishun Stadium on Friday evening as well.

Ms Lee was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area before the dissolution of Parliament for the ongoing elections.

It is unclear if Ms Lee, who wore an all-white attire, was invited to the event, or whether she had spoken or made a speech at the getai.

On 14 August, the Singapore Police issued a statement to remind political parties to keep getai and the elections separate.

“Election campaigning activities and Seventh Month Festival events should be kept separate,” the police statement said.

The police said Seventh Month Festival event organisers “should ensure that no speeches intended to canvass support for election candidates and/or political parties are delivered (at) Seventh Month Festival events”.

It is, however, unclear if election candidates are allowed to participate in getai activities.

The festival ends on 12 September.

The police warning in August was issued on the first day of the month-long Hungry Ghost or Seventh Month Festival.

It came after media reports that several getai organisers had been “approached by political parties that want to organise events with them to take advantage of the massive crowds that these outdoor stage performances attract”, according to local news reports.

UPDATE: Since the publication of the above report, TOC has received the following note from a member of the public, who wishes to remain anonymous:

“Dear TOC, I will like to share with you something important. Just now when I was walking back home to the khatib mrt, I happened to came across a GETAI performance which is just next to the basketball court area opposite Khatib mrt. Oh of curiosity I went to the GETAI to watch. In the midst of the performance, I saw the mc of the GETAI introducing the arrival of a person whom he identified as the PAP Candidate for Ngee Soon GRC. The person is Mdm Lee Bee Wah.

“The Mc continue with his speech and asked the audience to support her and vote for her in the coming election.

“While the mc was talking, Mdm Lee started to go from row to row and start shaking the hands of the attendees of the GETAI.

“The whole process lasted for close to 20 mins. I understand from the police advisory is that it is against the election law to solicited for votes through the avenue of the GETAI.”

More PAP candidates spotted at 7th Month Festival getai, despite police warning

SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 BY ARIFFIN SHA IN NEWS, UNCATEGORIZED · 53 COMMENTS

Despite clear warnings from the police that election rallies and Seventh Month Festival getai shows are to be kept separate, three PAP candidates were seen appealing for support at a getai show on Saturday evening.

Getai, which literally means “song stage” in Chinese, refers to variety performances which entertain both the living and the dead staged during this month.

The police had issued a statement on August 14 which said:

Getai performances and other forms of stage performances and entertainment are strictly not allowed before, during or after election rallies.

It also placed a burden on organizers of getai performances not to allow candidates to canvass for support.

Festival event organisers should ensure that no speeches intended to canvass support for election candidates and/or political parties are delivered (at) Seventh Month Festival events.

Last evening, at a getai Show organised by YYD Tuition Center, PAP candidates Teo Ser Luck, Gan Thiam Poh and new face Sun Xueling were present.

A reader sent in photos of their faces being projected on the stage.

Not long after their faces were shown, the PAP candidates appeared in person.

In what appears to be a clear breach of the warnings by the police, the candidates were then seen to make their way around the hall to meet the audience.

They were also on stage to give away prizes to a crowd of at least a thousand people.

The audience for the event

The event had all the making of a 7th month Getai show with altars set up behind a a large crowd coming to watch a free show.

TOC has written in to the police to notify them of a possible breach of law and we are currently awaiting their response.

On 4th September, another PAP candidate, Lee Bee Wah, also made an appearance at a getai in Nee Soon, where she is contesting in the elections.

Ms Lee was photographed on stage, and was reported to have been promoted by the emcee of the event. A member of the public who was there told TOC that the emcee had urged the audience to vote for her in the election. This would be a clear breach of election rules and police warning issued in August.

5th PAP candidate spotted at getai, police need to explain inaction

SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 BY ANDREW LOH IN NEWS · 29 COMMENTS

Yet another People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate has been spotted and photographed attending a getai, the nightly entertainment event during the Chinese Seventh Month Festival.

A photo purportedly of PAP candidate for Ang Mo Kio GRC, Ang Hin Kee, has been posted online, apparently speaking at a getai over the weekend.

Mr Ang is part of the PAP team which is led by Lee Hsien Loong, the secretary general of the party.

He is the fourth PAP candidate to be photographed at various getais over the last few days.

Previously, the PAP candidate for Nee Soon East GRC, Lee Bee Wah, was seen on stage at a getai in Yishun. Members of the public also told The Online Citizen that the emcee had urged the audience to vote for her as well, and that Ms Lee went round shaking hands with the attendees.

Ms Lee was dressed in white, which is the colour of the PAP uniform.

A day later, three other PAP candidates were spotted at another getai. They were Teo Ser Luck, Gan Thiam Poh and new face Sun Xueling.

PAP candidates making their rounds at getai

In August the police issued an advisory to organisers of getais and the political parties to keep getai and election activities separate.

The police also said:

“Festival event organisers should ensure that no speeches intended to canvass support for election candidates and/or political parties are delivered (at) Seventh Month Festival events.”

While the candidates could claim that they were not there to canvass for votes, and that they were not in the party’s uniform (except perhaps for Ms Lee), or that they did not wear any party badge or representation, the point is perhaps not this, but the spirit behind the prohibitions – which is to keep politics and entertainment separate during election period, and perhaps to also keep religion and politics separate during elections.

Yet, here are several PAP candidates – one of whom is a minister of state (Teo) – apparently and blatantly flouting the rules or police warning, and seeming to be getting away with it.

Despite the news being reported online, the police seem oblivious to the incidents and have neither issued any statements to clarify if such actions by the candidates are against the rules, nor taken any action against the candidates or their party.

What then are the rules for when PAP candidates can so blatantly ignore the Police’s warning or advisory?

Are they above the law?

TOC has written in to the police to notify them of a possible breach of the law and we are currently awaiting their response.

How can their own rules don't apply to themselves? So can disqualify these 5 PAP candidates?

Same same as the PWP. they are telling the Singapore people...."....so what? What can you do about it??.. for I am a natural aristocrat!!! I decide the rules and I decide what is the best for you!!!..."

Just grin freely???

What you said proved inherent danger to any country of the absolute aristocracy, despotism and monopolism of a non breaking one party rule for 50 years.
It is high time to break it!
