Student jailed four weeks for upskirt offences at bookstore

SINGAPORE - A student who took upskirt videos of women at a bookstore over two days was jailed for four weeks on Wednesday (Aug 26).
Jed Chung Junyi, 23, had pleaded guilty to five of 15 charges of insulting the modesty of a woman at Popular bookstore at Compass Point shopping mall in Sengkang on April 2 and 3 last year.
Investigations showed that on April 3 last year, he was at the mall when he decided to record upskirt videos of women.
He went to Popular bookstore and spent some time walking around looking for a woman in a skirt who caught his fancy.
After he spotted a victim, he took out his Samsung tablet, turned on the camera function and walked towards the victim. He went close enough to the victim and bent down next to her, pretending to be browsing items displayed on the bottom shelf.
He set the cellphone in video recording mode with the camera lens facing upwards and placed it under the victim's skirt. He bent down several times until he managed to capture the angle he desired.
After he managed to record the upskirt video, he moved on in search of the next woman.
He successfully took several more upskirt videos of multiple victims before he was spotted by a female shopper who alerted the assistant store manager.
The police were called.
A total of 15 upskirt videos were found in his Samsung tablet and laptop.
The remaining 10 charges were considered during his sentencing.
He could have been jailed for up to one year and/or fined for insulting modesty.
