North Korea has doubled its artillery power and the majority of its submarines seem to be away from their bases, a South Korean military official said, as cited by the Yonhap news agency. The announcement comes amid ongoing talks between the two sides over the border crisis.
According to the official, more than 50 North Korean submarines are out for operations.

"Seventy percent of North Korea's submarines left their bases, and their locations are not confirmed," a South Korean military official said, adding that Pyongyang has about 70 submarines in total.

North Korea maintains one of the world's largest submarine forces

THE ATTACK WILL BE A SUB BASED NUCLEAR ATTACK !
*************************************** ***********
Sub hunt risks stirring up China, North Korea
2 nations' undersea fleets are seen as growing threats. U.S. will test new system in area where adversaries commonly conduct patrols

By Emma Schwartz and Tom Squitieri
*
The Navy plans to begin testing a new method for hunting hostile submarines this fall off the coast of Japan, and the test will include looking for the real thing: diesel-electric North Korean and Chinese subs prowling in the Sea of Japan.
*
The Navy says the tests are not intended to be hostile and technically involve hunting only for submarines from allies such as Japan. But Navy officials acknowledge that the tests will also be watching for North Korean and Chinese subs because they frequent the areas where the tests will take place.
*
Defense officials say both nations' submarines pose threats that are getting more serious.
*
"North Korea maintains one of the world's largest submarine forces," said a defense official who asked not to be named. The official monitors the threat posed by potentially hostile naval forces. "Although they are antiquated by U.S. standards, they could pose a significant risk to naval operations" in the event of a war on the Korean peninsula, the official said.
*
The official said that China is committed to extending the size and range of its submarine fleet while acquiring modern weapons to transform itself "from a coastal defense navy to a force capable of sustained open-ocean operations."
*
The tests, as well as similar trials off Hawaii, are scheduled to begin in about two months. They are intended to try out the prototype of a detection device that analyzes underwater color patterns and detects color gradations too faint for the human eye to notice. Early versions of the device called the Littoral Airborne Sensor Hyperspectral, or LASH have spotted whales and submarines below the surface.
*
Current detection methods used by the Navy rely on sonar and other methods to "hear" the location of enemy submarines. The LASH system is designed to permit the Navy to see where submarines are.
*
Analysts fear the tests will provoke an angry reaction from North Korea, which has responded belligerently to any U.S. military moves it perceives are directed against it, such as military exercises in South Korea. The tests come at a time when the United States and North Korea are already locked in a tense standoff over U.S.
*
demands that North Korea give up its nuclear-bomb-making effort. Talks are scheduled to begin on that and other matters in Beijing next week. "No matter what the U.S. military says, you are going to get an adverse reaction from the North Koreans," says Charles Ferguson, a former submariner and a Korea expert at the State Department from 2000 to 2002. "I think the Pentagon is willing to live with that."
*
Ferguson adds that the North Koreans "will say, 'If you can reliably detect our submarines and sink our sub fleet before we have a chance to defend our coast, that is further justification to pursue weapons of mass destruction."
*
Military experts disagree about how serious a threat North Korean and Chinese submarines pose to U.S. and allied vessels. North Korea's fleet consists mostly of World War II-design diesel-powered subs. Although China is known to have one nuclear-powered submarine capable of carrying nuclear missiles, that vessel is believed to have problems that have largely confined it to port.
*
Even so, most analysts agree that the Chinese and North Korean subs could create serious trouble during a conflict in the region by menacing sea lanes and forcing U.S. aircraft carriers to stay farther away from targets for fear of being torpedoed.
*
"It is always a threat," says William Taylor, a retired Army colonel who was director of national security studies at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and has a specialty in Korean conflicts. "The subs can put special operations teams in place, they can target aircraft carriers, locate other targets, and with the Chinese nuclear (weapon) capability, there are different threat categories altogether."
*
The new surveillance system, which was developed by Hawaii-based Science & Technology International (STI), is useful only during daylight hours because it relies on reflected sunlight to illuminate a target. Special sensors relay the images to computers, where LASH technology is able to distinguish shades of color in underwater objects that look identical to the human eye.
*
Defense experts say they're not surprised that the Navy chose to test the system in the Sea of Japan, where Chinese and North Korean submarines patrol.
*
The Navy "is quite obsessed with North Korea and the Red Chinese. They are the navies that the U.S. is most likely to fight, and (their submarines) are not that easy to find," says John Pike, an analyst with GlobalSecurity.org, a defense research group in Alexandria, Va.
*
Pike says there is a real danger that the tests will ratchet up North Korean anxiety and possibly cause a clash. "They are already pegged at 11 on a scale of 10," Pike says of the North Koreans.
*
*"They are locked and loaded."
*
Tensions between the United States and North Korea crisis were inflamed in October when North Korea admitted it was pursuing a uranium-enrichment program to produce atomic weapons, a development that Washington believes could destabilize East Asia. Since then, North Korean officials have publicly charged that any U.S. military actions in the region, including a proposal to move U.S. troops off North Korea's border with South Korea, are part of a pre-attack agenda.
*
Military officials say that although many or most Chinese and North Korean submarines rely on technology that originated in World War II, advances in propellers, engines and electronics make these subs extremely quiet.
Adding to detection challenges: The relatively shallow ocean waters over the continental shelf are so noisy that it's difficult to hear submarines there.
*
"Sound waves are diffused and distorted in this coastal zone, and you have a huge number of vessels, motorboats, even whales making noise," says Jonathan Gradie, chief technology officer for STI. "There is a cacophony of noise that reduces the effectiveness of acoustic systems."
*
The tests will be conducted by Navy P-3 Orion sub-hunter aircraft and SH-60 Seahawk helicopters.
*

North Korea deploys 'undetectable' submarines and hovercraft invasion forces
NORTH KOREA has deployed 50 submarines and 10 large military hovercraft designed to put special invasion forces ashore on South Korean beaches, as THOUSANDS of "brainwashed" youngsters sign up to the secretive state's army.

A previously released propaganda images of the North's invasion force storming a beach
As tensions with the South reach boiling point, the North's unpredictable dictator Kim Jong-un has moved unusual numbers of troops and naval vessels to the border in preparation for conflict.

An official from the South's Defence Ministry said around 50 of the North's submarines and undersea vehicles had left their bases and were now undetectable.

Officials in the South's capital Seoul said the North had also doubled the strength of its front-line artillery forces but wouldn't confirm or deny reports that Jong-un had ordered 10 craft used for landings by special forces towards the border.

Military sources had said the North's vessels were spotted leaving their home port at Cholsan and moving to an advanced base some 40 miles north of the Northern Limit Line, the disputed North-South border off the west coast of the Korean peninsula.

The North is able to deploy two types of assault hovercraft, a 35-ton Gongbang II, which has a top speed of 60 mph, and the smaller but faster Gongbang III.

They’re curious about what’s going on but constantly brainwashed that the world is hostile

However, previously released propaganda images of the North's invasion force storming a beach quickly attracted claims they were digitally manipulated to make them look more impressive.

The recent standoff between North and Sounth began with an exchange of artillery fire on Thursday into the peninsula's demilitarised zone.

Jong-un had retaliated after the South began broadcasting anti-North Korean propaganda on loudspeakers at the border for 10 hours a day.

The portly leader then threatened to move to “all-out war”.

Officials in Seoul, however, said they had acted after two South Korean soldiers had been maimed by a landmine.

The President of South Korea today vowed there would be "no retreat" from her country in the event of war.*

Park Geun-hye said the South's cross-border propaganda broadcasts would continue until Jong-un's regime in the North's capital Pyongyang apologises.*

In a statement released by her office, she said: "We need a clear apology and measures to prevent a recurrence of these provocations and tense situations.*

"Otherwise, this government will take appropriate steps and continue loudspeaker broadcasts."

Ms Park promised a "stern retaliation" for any further provocation adding: "There will be no retreat in the face of North Korean threats".

AP
North Korea and South Korea's top chiefs have met for tense two-day talks
This is despite two-day marathon talks that began on Saturday between top aides to both countries' leaders, who have so far failed to defuse tensions that have brought peninsula to the brink of armed conflict.*

Meanwhile, children from North Korea are signing up to the Communist country's army in their hundreds of thousands because they are "brainwashed," an expert has warned.*

Dr Leonid Petrov from ANU’s College of Asia and the Pacific said: "The young generation don’t know much about life outside.

"They’re curious about what’s going on but constantly brainwashed that the world is hostile. Life in North Korea is pretty artificial.*

"There’s access to fashionable clothes in Pyongyang, where people can see, but in rural areas, even if you have a mobile phone there’s no electricity, or access to the web. People eat a little better now but life is pretty difficult."

Experts on nuclear-armed North Korea said the landmine blast and last week’s shelling were the most serious security incidents at the border since Jong-un came to power after the death of his father Kim Jong-il in 2011.

The North said it was prepared for “all-out war” and was conducting short-range missile tests.

It denies responsibility for the landmine attack and says it did not fire across the border.

Seoul and Pyongyang have technically remained in a state of war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, rather than a peace treaty.*

Is really unfinished business from 1953. I don't see how the world can co-exist with this regime. Should have been concluded in 53. McCarthur was right.

Rubbish.... The reason it was not concluded was because the US, British and S Koreans couldn't finish it without an all out war with Russia and China.

N Korea won that war.

If they were left alone to themselves, the world will co-exist just fine. But it is the real warmongers and power mad lunatics that want to take it down.

It is hard to find a report with this much propaganda in it and remain believable.

If it is true (and it is a big 'if') and N Korea have mobilised 50 of its subs, then they must mean business this time seeing as that represents about 75% of all their subs. If you are committing 75% of a certain armament, then you mean business.

They also have a huge army of 4.5 million who are active and another 8 million in reserve. They also have a huge amount of armaments and of course will be resupplied by the Chinese and Russians who will do anything and everything to keep the Americans out of N Korea and away from their borders.

N Korea is a buffer, and they will never allow the USA to touch their borders, I can tell you that now.

Now lets hear all the gung ho pro-USA idiots try to tell us all how easy it is going to be to crush that country, they are dreaming.

If what you say is correct, China and Russia will not allow the war to start... I believe that this is just another ego boosting adventure for the North's demented leader, who does actually realise that the South will not attack first in any event, as the US will keep them in check, and thus he can safely posture on the world stage to impress his suffering citizens.

Agree with your other points, its childish we can't post on certain topics despite other papers allowing comments on the same stories, in fact the more inflammatory the article the greater probability comments will not be allowed, even though there's obviously no legal requirement to stop public debate.
All designed to encourage anger and hostility at our loss of freedom of speech.

North Korea, Kim Jong Un Deploy 20 Assault Hovercraft To Yellow Sea Amid War Tensions With Seoul

North Koreans who signed up to join the army march amid political tension with South Korea, in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency in Pyongyang, Aug. 23, 2015. Top aides to the leaders of North and South Korea resumed talks Sunday after negotiating through the night in a bid to ease tensions involving an exchange of artillery fire that brought the peninsula to the brink of armed conflict. Reuters/Korean Central News Agency
North Korea deployed 20 assault hovercraft to the Yellow Sea on Monday as regional tensions with South Korea continue. The deployment of the hovercraft, which are believed to be heading to the Goampo naval base -- situated just 60 kilometers from the sea border of the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone with the South -- comes as both sides maintained more aggressive military postures, South Korean News Agency Yonhap*reported.

"Since the North declared a quasi-war condition, every move of the North Korean army is being detected by the joint surveillance assets of South Korea and the United States," a Yonhap source said.

Kim Jong Un has ordered his North Korean troops to increase artillery along the border, while dozens of missile-loaded submarines have already been launched from naval bases around the country. Naval forces in the South, which ordinarily would be able to track the low-tech submarines with relative ease, have already lost some of the*50 submarines that were launched by Pyongyang over the weekend, Yonhap reported.

North Korean Armed Forces Over Time | FindTheData

In response, the U.S. military, South Korea's ally with more than 30,000 troops in the country, is mulling the deployment of B-52 bombers and one submarine. In the event of war, the bombers would*strike strategic targets such as airports and missile silos before ground troops would be committed.*In addition, four U.S. F-16 jets and four F-15K jets took part in bombing drills Saturday and Sunday.

Pyongyang and Seoul have both been readying their respective militaries after border tensions during the last two weeks*threatened*to boil over into war. After two of its soldiers were maimed by land mines that were allegedly placed on the south side of the Demilitarized Zone, Seoul reestablished a propaganda speaker system that transmits negative messages about the Pyongyang regime. While Pyongyang denies the charge, it has said it would attack the South if the messages of propaganda didn’t stop. South Korea has demanded an apology over the land mine attack.

North Korea had threatened to attack the North at 4 a.m. EDT Saturday, but talks between the two*managed to calm the war rhetoric.

This*level of preparation for war is not uncommon on the peninsula. North Korea has regularly threatened to invade and destroy the South*since the war between the two ended in 1953. Last week, Pyongyang said it would turn Seoul into a "sea of fire."
