PAP say we need new Citizen for our survival.. but

Who caused us to be in this position in the first place?? Graying population, not enough babies... A lot of the blame can be laid on PAP for their pop policies in the 70s and 80s. People may say it's so long ago but pop measures r like a 1000 ton locomotive. Apply the brakes and it take a lot of stopping. Also another big question need to be asked of PAP. Why were they so worried about overpopulation at that time when the pop is prob 2m+?? Why today they reverse their thinking and going for 6.9m or even 10m??
Sim Ann said in the NUS forum that we need new citizens for our very survival. The question need to be thrown back at her.. Who caused this in the very first place ?

New citizens vote for the governing party because new citizens better appreciate our good PAP government. For example, most malaysians who live and work in Singapore agree that PAP is far better than UMNO. PAP has none of UMNO's corruption, racism, religious discrimination, and racist politics that forever want the Malaysian Chinese to be thankful to the m&ds for the "privilege" to reside in Malaya as guests.

My point is if PAP never implement pop control measures in the past, we would not need so many New Citizens.

BS! New citizens have not lived here long enough to appreciate the spur wounds that the governing party can inflict. Give them a few years, and when they are blue-black all over, they will vote opposition. Then the governing party needs more new citizens........and the cycle repeats over and over.

Where got forgive them! Because of the "Boy or Girl, Two is Enough" campaign I only have one sibling. Everyone knows its LKY's fault. And if I am not wrong, he tried to explain away the intent of that ill fated exercise. So, if they saw people as a strain on resources then (hence making it difficult to govern), they certainly have done a 180 turn today. Seeing people as a way for them to stay in power, i.e., new citizens who will vote for them.

I don't think Ah Gong goofed. Back then when Singapore was still 3rd World and per capita income was much lower, most sinkie families simply couldn't afford to raise so many kids. The government also didn't have the resources it had today to educate so many kids and provide that many jobs for them. This is a problem faced by all developed societies.

He should not have meddled in the private lives of citizens through his machiavellian social engineering campaign. Let each family decide how many kids they want based on their economic means. Most people will find a way to survive and navigate life's circumstances. He controlled the population so that it would be easier for him to rule and consolidate power.

Two things :

- we were/are not Pinoys and Indons. 75% are hardworking and enterprising chinese
- we did not have an incompetent govt then. He were blessed with a great team, filled with brilliant men and visionaries

Thus, our circumstances were different. That's why he goofed.

This is thought does not hold water. We were at 2.7M thereabouts in population when they began the open door policy. Even without the population control and birthrate is at 2.1 or so, we will not reach 6.9m or the 5.5m we have now
