SINGAPORE: The People’s Action Party (PAP) on Sunday (Aug 16) officially announced its lineup for West Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for the coming General Election.
Joining the GRC - which has been downsized from a five to four-member constituency for the coming polls is Mr Patrick Tay , who moves over from Nee Soon GRC. It was earlier announced that MP Lawrence Wong moves to PAP's team for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.
He was unveiled together with Ms Foo Mee Har, Mr S Iswaran and Mr Lim Hng Kiang at the PAP’s Boon Lay Branch.
The four PAP candidates for West Coast GRC will be:
Mr Lim Hng Kiang, 61, Minister for Trade and Industry
Mr Lim previously served as Minister for National Development from 1995 to 1999; Minister for Health from 1999 to 2003 and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office from 2003 to 2004. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) with Tanjong Pagar GRC in 1991, but has represented West Coast GRC since 1997.
Mr S Iswaran, 53, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office
Mr Iswaran is also the Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry. He has been an MP with West Coast since 1997.
Ms Foo Mee Har, 49, CEO, Wealth Management Institute
Ms Foo is a member of the Government Parliamentary Committees (GPC) of Finance and Trade and Industry as well as Manpower. She has been an MP with West Coast since 2011.
Mr Patrick Tay, 43, Director, Legal Service Department, NTUC
Mr Tay is also an assistant secretary-general at the National Trades Union Congress and a member of the GPCs of Health and Manpower. He has been an MP with Nee Soon since 2011.
DEPARTING CANDIDATES
Mr Tay replaces MP Arthur Fong, who is stepping down from politics. Mr Fong, 51, has represented West Coast GRC since 2001 as MP for the Clementi ward, which will fall under Jurong GRC. He is the managing director of the Bank of Singapore and a member of the GPCs for Communications and Information; Culture, Community and Youth; and Home Affairs and Law.
Mr Wong, 42, is the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth. He will co-anchor the newly-formed Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC with Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob.
In 2011, the PAP team which contested West Coast GRC at the GE won 66.57 per cent of the vote against a Reform Party (RP) team led by Kenneth Jeyaretnam.
RP has already declared that it will once again contest West Coast GRC this year.
The ruling party has said it will announce its entire slate of candidates for the GE before the National Day Rally on Aug 23, in a break from tradition. Prior to Sunday, the PAP had unveiled its teams for three GRCs and two SMCs.
