Today is the anniversary of the A-bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. Very controversial, but it forced Japan to surrender, and the war ended decidedly. Since then, more nuclear weapons have been made, and our species haven't exactly ended our squabbles, so hopefully, Hiroshima and Nagasaki reminds us of the massive devastation these weapons are capable of, and hopefully, it won't happen again. Live long, and prosper.

Cheers!

Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Anniversary: 15 Interesting Facts About The Blasts In Japan 70 Years Ago

By Julia Glum @superjulia [email protected] on August 05 2015 5:23 PM EDT

Seventy years ago this week, as World War II was drawing to a close, the United States dropped two atomic bombs in Japan. The first target was Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and the second was Nagasaki on Aug. 9. The explosions wrecked the cities but resulted in an Allied victory.
The atomic bombs were a long time coming. American scientists started work on atomic weapons in 1940, joining together for the secret Manhattan Project. They eventually sent their products to New Mexico, where J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team assembled a workable bomb from uranium and plutonium.
In a news release issued Aug. 6, then-President Harry Truman wrote that the bomb had destroyed Hiroshima. "It is a harnessing of the basic power of the universe. The force from which the sun draws its power has been loosed against those who brought war to the Far East," he said, adding, "If they do not now accept our terms they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth."
Here are facts about the bombs, collected from BBC, the Brookings Institution and the History Channel:
• The Manhattan Project cost $2 billion.
• Truman ordered the bomb dropping after Japan rejected the Potsdam Declaration demanding the nation's surrender.
• Kyoto was initially considered for the second bomb, but -- as legend has it -- Secretary of War Henry Stimson asked for it to be removed because he'd been there on his honeymoon.
• The plane that carried the bomb to Hiroshima was named "Enola Gay."
• On board "Enola Gay" were cyanide pills for the passengers to take if the mission failed.
• The bombs detonated about 1,900 feet above the ground.
• About 70,000 people were killed instantly, though thousands of others suffered long-term effects from radiation. Recent estimates have put the death toll at 192,000.
• More than 60,000 buildings were decimated.
• The Aug. 6 bomb was named “Little Boy,” and it was uranium-based. The Aug. 9 bomb was named “Fat Man,” and it was plutonium-based.
• “Little Boy” was about three meters long and weighed more than four metric tons. “Fat Man” was even bigger, at about 3.5 meters long and 4.5 tons.
• “Little Boy” annihilated about five square miles of Hiroshima, whereas “Fat Man” destroyed only 2.6.
• Only one man officially survived both blasts -- a man named Tsutomi Yamaguchi. He escaped Hiroshima after the first bomb and went to his hometown, Nagasaki, which was ruined three days later. He died in 2010.
• Japan agreed to the terms of surrender five days after the second bomb was dropped.
• The formal agreement was signed Sept. 2.
• The U.S. has built 4,680 nuclear bombers since then.

the fire bombing of Tokyo killed more Japanese in a single night than the A bomb. it was estimate that between 100-200k Japanese was killed on the night of 9 march when B29s dropped incendiaries on Tokyo. hundred of thousands were injured with over a million rendered homeless.

even without the A bomb, japan would have surrender as long AAF keep dropping incendiaries on Japanese cities.

Yes. Japanese Empire lost the war once the Americans reacted after Pearl Harbour. It was a matter of time before they had to yield, and the Soviets were already preparing to land troops in Nippon. I believe the Yanks dropped the bomb was also to let the Soviets know they already developed the weapon and ensure that they have Japan under them at the end of the war (the two bombs were likely all they had at that time). Japan (or rather their main cities) were bombed by conventional bombs into oblivion before the nuclear attack, their navy and airforce were incapacitated, and their armed forces thinned out too severely by the end of WW2. There was no need to drop the A-bomb to achieve victory for US. But they did. The fierce Samurai race has since been transformed into a polite and obliging nation, for the better of the present world.

Cheers!

The real reason the Americans won and continue to be a super power is because they had obtained and still in possession of The Spear of Destiny, go google for it yourself.

The humiliation to the Nips after losing the war was tremendous. Listening to my Ah Kong describing the Japanese is really one of atrocious barbarism, so extreme, they don't seem human. Myself, in my working life and meeting Japanese, paint a completely different picture of them. They come across as extremely polite, well-behaved, even-mannered, soft-spoken beings. Totally different from what my Ah Kong says of them.

Cheers!

Good to see nigger japs get bombed the fuck out.

They come across as extremely polite, well-behaved, even-mannered, soft-spoken beings? you are looking at skin deep. Japanese had been and always been a vicious race. They on the surface can be like what u see but their inner self are way more complex than that. Just look at the Japanese porn already can see how sick they are. Ordinary salarymen pay $$ to go Thailand for the flesh tour. Of course other races also go overseas for sex but the Japanese had tour agencies that specialise on it. where your so call mild manner and well behave human being turn into a breast.

In every race, there will be psychos, perverts, and the undesirables. I am no expert in sociology or other subjects in human behaviour, but am sure the sex fiends you described can be found in every race. My comments/impression on Japanese come from those I have met, and those I have met are through my work are exactly like what I said. I do not know what they are like during their time-off, and it is none of my business, and I choose not to speculate but having said this, I am sure there are monsters among them as well.

Cheers!

U are a fucking moron. It is to my eternal regret that the Americans did not drop more atomic bombs on Japan. They should have dropped a minimum of 12, and turned the whole place into a nuclear wasteland. I lost my grand uncle to the Japs in WW2 when they took him away and he was never seen again. not to mention all the atrocities they did to the Chinese like the Rape of Nanjing, as well as their torture and inhumane treatment of POWs. Its one thing to defeat a people or army and subjugate them. But There is no reason to resort to barbarism, murder and inhumane treatment of other human beings. These fuckers are worse then animals. They can not be trusted. Even though they are successful and strong country now, you should trust them like you would trust the North Koreans. Only thing worse then these barbarians are the people who collaborated with them, like the Great Deceiver, Lee Con You.

President Truman decided to drop the A-bomb otherwise it would cost at least two million American lives to invade Japan and not because of the Soviets.
