Speaking at a National Day dinner at Fengshan Community Club on Sunday (2 Aug), former transport minister Raymond Lim gave strong hints that he would be retiring from politics and would not be contesting in the upcoming GE.
He said, “It has been a great privilege and honour for me to have served as your MP these past 14 years.”
He thanked grassroots volunteers and residents in Fengshan ward of East Coast GRC for their support. It gave him “happiness and fulfilment” to be able to work with them to serve residents, he added, hinting that he would not be continuing to work with them anymore.
Never spoken a word in Parliament
A check on Parliament reports [Link] produced by the current 12th Parliament showed that Mr Lim did not appear to have said anything in Parliament since the last GE.
In fact, he appears to have attended only 1 Parliament session on 10 October 2011 during the Administration of Oaths ceremony for MPs [Link].
Mr Lim served as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office from 2005 to 2006, followed by the Minister for Transport from 2006 to 2011. Mr Lim and his team performed badly in East Coast GRC in the 2011 GE. The PAP team scored 54.8%, down from 63.9% in 2006 GE.
Subsequently, he stepped down from the Cabinet and became a backbencher MP.
Mr Lim, as Minister of Transport was best known for his remarks in 2008 [Link]:
Mr Lim explained: “This is because the public transport fare is not directly linked to the oil prices. We link it to national factors, like the inflation level in Singapore, and the wage level in the whole of Singapore.”
His remarks in 2008 with regard to transport fares not linked to oil prices ran contrary to the recent remarks by the current Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew who said that transport fares are being lowered because of reduced fuel cost (‘Lui suddenly announces fare reduction at year end‘).
Mr Lui’s remarks came about 1 year late when oil prices started plummeting from 3rd quarter of last year to below US$50 in January this year.
