Neymar frustated with referees

9 November 2015

943754header.jpg

Barcelona star Neymar has voiced his frustration with the level of refereeing in the Spanish game in the wake of the Liga champions' 3-0 win over Villarreal on Sunday.

A double from Neymar - including a sublime second late in the game - and a Luis Suarez penalty gave Barca a victory that puts them three points clear of Real Madrid ahead of the Clasico on November 21.

However, both Neymar and Suarez - along with captain Andres Iniesta - were booked after voicing their dismay with one of Clos Gomez's decisions and the Brazil captain was quoted by AS as saying: "I think the referee lost control of the game a little

"We can't talk to him or reply to him. They immediately pull out a yellow card when you say something to them.

"But we give our answer with what we do on the pitch."

Ronaldo playing under protest at Madrid - Valdano

10 November 2015

944362header.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo is playing under protest at Real Madrid, according to Jorge Valdano.

Ronaldo has struggled to capture his usual sparkling form under new Madrid coach Rafael Benitez. The Portugal international has eight goals in 11 league games this season, but five of those came in a 6-0 rout of Espanyol back in September.

The former Manchester United forward has five goals in four games in the Champions League but is believed by many to be unhappy playing in a central position under Benitez.

And Valdano, who coached Madrid from 1994 to 1996 and has also served as the club's director of football, revealed Ronaldo is "not comfortable".

He told Cadena SER: "Ronaldo would prefer to be playing out on the left like he's always done.

"It's hard to know if it's because he's not scoring, or his position, but he's not enjoying playing at the moment. He's playing under protest."

Eusebio Sacristan succeeds Moyes at Real Sociedad

9 November 2015

Real Sociedad have named Eusebio Sacristan as their new head coach following the sacking of David Moyes.

The former Manchester United manager was dismissed earlier on Monday after La Real were beaten 2-0 by Las Palmas on Friday to leave them just two points off the bottom of La Liga.

Assistant coach Billy McKinlay was also removed from his role.

Former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Eusebio, who was head coach of the Barca B squad from 2011 until February this year, has since been announced as Moyes's replacement after signing a two-year deal at Anoeta.

"He will be presented tomorrow [Tuesday] at noon and will lead his first training session in the afternoon," a club statement confirmed.

Eusebio won four La Liga titles and the European Cup as a player, as well as earning 15 senior caps for the Spain national team.

He was also assistant to Frank Rijkaard at Camp Nou between 2003 and 2008, during which time Barca won the league twice and the Champions League, before a single season as head coach of Celta Vigo.

Barcelona will not force Messi´s Clasico comeback, says Bartomeu

10 November 2015

944388header.jpg

Lionel Messi should be be fit to return for El Clasico this month, but Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu insists the club will not force his comeback.

The Argentina international has been sidelined since sustaining a knee injury against Las Palmas on September 26.

Barca have won seven out of nine matches in all competitions since Messi was injured, but face Real Madrid – who they lead by three points at the top of La Liga – in the crunch Clasico clash after the international break on November 21.

That would be eight weeks after the 28-year-old's injury, which was at the upper end of the estimates provided by the club, and Bartomeu hopes to see his star man take the field at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"The recovery of Leo Messi is within the timeframe we set ourselves, but we do not intend to force anything," he is quoted as saying by AS.

"I hope he can play. If he can, great but if not, we have a lot of talent to beat them.

"I hope all of our players get through their trips with their national teams without injury and with great strength. We can then give our all to beat our rivals."

Prior to his injury, Messi had scored six times from 10 appearances in 2015-16.

Dental surgery sidelines Ter Stegen for a week

9 November 2015

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will miss a week of training as a result of planned dental surgery.

The 23-year-old was left out of the Germany squad for friendlies against France and the Netherlands and was expected to work with the other Barca who have not been called up by their national teams.

Ter Stegen will sit out Barca's practice sessions for the remainder of this week, though the club are confident he will be fit to be included in the matchday squad for the Clasico showdown with Real Madrid at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on November 21.

"Luis Enrique will be without Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in training this week as the German keeper will undergo dental surgery, a procedure that had been planned in advance," read a club statement released on Monday.

"Nevertheless, the player is expected to be back in training from the start of next week, after the international break, to prepare for the Clasico against Real Madrid."

Ter Stegen has made 10 appearances in all competitions so far this season for the European champions, but some of his performances have prompted criticism and he has lost the starting spot in the league to Claudio Bravo since the Chilean's return to full fitness.

I made Ronaldo, says Keane

11 November 2015

944825header.jpg

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has cheekily taken credit for developing Cristiano Ronaldo into the three-time Ballon d'Or winner he is today.

Keane played alongside Ronaldo at Old Trafford for two years between 2003 and 2005, before the outspoken Irishman departed for Celtic.

Ronaldo - now at Real Madrid - has gone on to win three Premier League titles, one La Liga crown and two Champions League trophies among others.

And Keane feels he deserves some recognition for his work with the Portugal captain, telling reporters: "Yeah I made him.

"Only for me he wouldn't be where he is.

"Of course yeah, obviously different players have different traits in how you speak to them and who you shout at and who you don't, but I didn't shout at Ronaldo that much. I didn't have to."

Van der Vaart never expected Bale to play for Madrid

10 November 2015

944594header.jpg

Rafael van der Vaart says he never expected Real Madrid to sign Gareth Bale and has described Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho as "suffocating".

Attacking midfielder Van der Vaart played with Madrid forward Bale during his time at Tottenham. The Dutchman left White Hart Lane for Hamburg in 2012, with Bale moving to the Santiago Bernabeu for a world-record transfer fee in September 2013.

Bale has enjoyed success with Madrid, winning the Champions League, Copa del Rey, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup with the club.

However, Bale was criticised for his performances last season and has been limited to just seven appearances so far this campaign due to injuries.

And, in an interview with Canal Plus, Van der Vaart said: "I never thought Bale would end up playing at Madrid. Bale isn't like [Cristiano] Ronaldo or [Lionel] Messi; that's another level."

Asked about his move from Madrid to Tottenham, which came three months after Mourinho's appointment as coach, Van der Vaart added: "Mourinho is a very good coach; he's suffocating, but he knows what he wants.

"He told me they were going to sign [Mesut] Ozil and that it was best that I left for another team in England or wherever."

The 32-year-old rose through the ranks at Ajax, where he was a team-mate of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who left Dutch club for Juventus in 2004 shortly after Van der Vaart had allegedly accused the Swede of injuring him intentionally in a friendly between Sweden and Netherlands in 2004.

On his relationship with the Paris Saint-Germain striker, Van der Vaart said: "He's a very cocky guy, like me, and there are times when somebody says something to you that you don't like and you get into a fight.

"We sometimes had problems although when we played together we did well."

Eclipsed by Messi and Ronaldo, but Raul remains 'Mr Champions League'

The former Real Madrid striker looks to bow out with a title in his final appearance on a football field this Sunday. But whether he does or not, his legacy will be long-lasting

By Ben Hayward

He is the champion of the Champions. Raul Gonzalez Blanco’s story will forever be linked with that of Europe’s premier club competition; he may no longer be the tournament’s top scorer - having been overtaken by Barcelona's Lionel Messi and former Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo - but he remains synonymous with the continent's top tournament.

On Sunday, Raul brings down the curtain on a spectacular playing career and he can do so by adding another trophy to his collection: a NASL title with NY Cosmos if they can beat Ottawa Fury FC. It would be the 22nd piece of silverware since his debut in 1994 and a fitting end for a modern-day icon.

Those titles don't include Spain's successes in recent years. Raul captained his country for several years, but the late Luis Aragones made a decision with his job on the line. There would be a new style for La Roja - and the striker was left out in the cold. Confronted by furious fans pushing for Raul's reinstatement, Aragones stood firm. "Do you know how many World Cups Raul has been to?” Aragones answered, in earshot of a television camera. "Three. How many European Championships? Two. And how many World Cups have we won with Raul? None."

Without him, Spain won Euro 2008 and even though he returned to form for Real, he would never return for La Roja. He did score 44 goals in 102 games for the national team, though, and is second behind only David Villa (who also inherited his number 7 shirt) in the country's list of all-time international scorers.

Instead, he will remembered for Madrid's modern successes in Europe especially. Indeed, former Real team-mate Christoph Metzelder once described Raul as "Mr. Champions League." And even though he is no longer the tournament's top scorer, nor has he won it as many times as Messi for example, he has influenced Europe's elite competition like few others.

Since breaking onto the scene as a precocious 17-year-old, Raul has perhaps achieved more than he should have: he was never especially quick, doesn’t have a powerful shot, is not a big aerial presence, nor is he blessed with wonderful technical ability. But in his head, he is quicker than anyone else, allowing him to react faster than his opponents, attract the ball like a magnet, fool rival defenders and move to exactly where he needs to be. "Raul is the best in everything," former team-mate Santiago Solari once commented. "Without being the best at anything."

And he scores goals; lots of goals, all types of goals: brilliant goals, simple goals, team goals, individual goals. Tap-ins and tapestries; a little bit of everything – like tapas. But they all count and for some time they made him the Champions League’s leading scorer with 71 goals in 144 appearances, which is no mean feat for a player often described by Madrid haters and even some blinkered Real fans as el que no hace nada nunca – he who never does anything.

But there’s also mental toughness and cerebro – and there’s preparation, too. Dedication, dedication, dedication; Raul emerged as a teenager at Madrid and his immediate brilliance forced Emilio Butragueno – one of Spain’s greatest ever players – into an early retirement. And over the years, as age, injuries and the sheer number of matches he has been forced to play have taken their toll, Raul always managed to stay ahead of the game, using many techniques to keep fit, in shape and sharp; he was one of the first players to take ice baths and also slept in an hypoxic chamber during his final years at Madrid in order to stay fitter and fresher than the rest.

"He’s a person that a lot of people should look up to because he is very dedicated to what he does and what he believes in," David Beckham said upon leaving Madrid. Such dedication and commitment have brought not only big results for Raul, but also big rewards. And many of these have come in the Champions League.

Raul made his first Champions League appearance in a 1-0 defeat away to Ajax, but his home debut was spectacular: a hat-trick in a 6-1 thrashing of Ferencvaros. He also scored a leveller in Hungary, bagged the first in a 2-0 success at home to Grasshoppers and netted the only goal of the game in a memorable quarter-final win at Juventus. The Italians won the second match 2-0, however, to knock out Madrid and the club failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season.

But they were back – along with Raul – in 1997. And how! Raul scored twice in the group stages, but was a key component in the side which went on to win their first European Cup since 1966. Raul played 90 minutes in the final and was replaced right at the end by Jose Amavisca. It was the start of something special for player and club.

After a shock quarter-final exit to Dynamo Kiev in 1998-99, Raul helped his side avenge their elimination at the hands of the Ukrainian side in the previous edition by lashing home a brilliant lofted drive from 25 yards to secure a 2-1 win away from home. Further goals arrived in the wins home and away to Rosenborg, and a 4-2 success against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu.

2092812.jpg

But the best was yet to come: two memorable strikes against Manchester United which sum up the striker’s game to a tee. The first saw Raul pick up the ball some 40 yards from goal on a quick counter-attack, advance into the area, sidestep Mikael Silvestre and curl an inch-perfect left-footed drive into the corner, while the second was all about his movement – and all about Fernando Redondo. In one of Old Trafford’s most famous goals scored by a visiting team, the Argentine beat Henning Berg with a stunning back-heel flick in the corner and squared for Raul – in the right place at the right time – to tap home. "Real buy these big players like [Luis] Figo, [Zinedine] Zidane and Ronaldo, but I think the best player in the world is Raul," United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said some years later. And he has experienced it at first hand.

Raul then rounded off a glorious campaign as he scored the third in his side’s 3-0 final win over Valencia, racing clear from his own half and keeping his cool to round Santiago Canizares and slot the ball in from an angle and wide of the backtracking Miroslav Djukic. Cool, calm, and collected.

The Spanish striker was then on target again as Madrid claimed La Novena - a ninth European Cup. In the 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen, he opened the scoring by racing onto a long Roberto Carlos throw-in and beating German goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt with an opportunistic finish. It was another highlight - and another trophy.

Raul was on target nine times as Madrid advanced to the semi-finals the following year. Many of those goals were spectacular too, notably the double he scored in the 3-1 win against Manchester United – when he lashed a low shot into the corner from 25 yards and added a second with a great turn and clinical finish – and one of his two in the 3-1 victory over AC Milan – when he fooled two defenders and thumped an unstoppable right-footed effort into the roof of the net from outside the box. "Raul is a Ferrari," Fernando Hierro, his predecessor as captain of Real and Spain, famously commented.

495291.jpg

639601.jpg

Subsequent seasons were less impressive as Madrid failed to progress to the latter stages, but the goals continued to flow for Raul and he became the first player to reach 50 Champions League strikes when he netted in a 2–1 group stage win over Olympiacos in 2005.

However, the striker perhaps didn’t enjoy the recognition he merited due to his unassuming personality and scandal-free public life. "I think he is the greatest player to have ever played the game. He walks on the turf and astounds. It is utterly amazing," said former Real team-mate Figo, while Italy forward Francesco Totti believes Raul deserved to claim football’s top individual gong. "It’s a scandal that Raul has never won the Golden Ball," he complained. Most in Spain believe that 2001, when he came second behind Liverpool's Michael Owen (who would later become a team-mate at Real), should have been his year.

Raul ultimately left Madrid in 2010 to join Schalke. In search of a new challenge after some trying times in his final few seasons at Real, he was welcomed in open arms by the German side and helped them to the semi-finals of his favourite competition, the Champions League. Against all odds. He also added two titles to his cabinet during his time in Gelsenkirchen.

Often described by close friend, ex-international colleague and former Barca boss Pep Guardiola as "the best player Spain has ever had", the 38-year-old has received a number of tributes this week as he prepares for his finale on Sunday. And perhaps the biggest - and most surprising - praise of all came from Cristiano. "To me," the Portuguese said in a video message. "You were the best."

Ronaldo, Ferguson, Figo and countless others can't all be wrong. So even though his goalscoring records may have been beaten, Raul's legacy will live on. On Sunday, a legend leaves the pitch for the final time - and football will be a poorer place without him.

Madrid have no one to replace Ronaldo - Faubert

The 32-year-old expects los Blancos to have difficulty filling the boots of their all-time top scorer as he does not feel Gareth Bale is capable enough

Former Real Madrid winger Julien Faubert believes Neymar will one day be a worthy successor to Lionel Messi at Barcelona, but feels his ex-club will struggle to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo became Madrid's all-time top scorer in October but has struggled to shine under Rafael Benitez this season, allowing Barcelona to surge into the lead in La Liga with Neymar deputising capably for the injured Messi.

Speaking ahead of next week's El Clasico clash, Faubert says the Brazilian is a ready-made replacement for his counterpart, whereas Gareth Bale is incapable of filling Ronaldo's boots.

"Neymar has the same quality and power that Messi and Ronaldo have. His level is very high," Faubert told AS.

"We do not know the same about Bale. After Messi, Barca will have Neymar, but after Ronaldo, we do not know what will happen to Madrid."

The once-capped France international also weighed in on who reigned between Messi and Ronaldo, stating the former is the more naturally-gifted of the duo.

He said: "Messi did not have to work too hard to get to his level.

"He is pure talent. Ronaldo, on the other hand, has had to work hard every day to reach his level."

Madrid star Karim Benzema could meanwhile face jail time after pleading guilty to his involvement in blackmailing Mathieu Valbuena in a sex-tape scandal, and his compatriot Faubert admitted the news took him aback.

"People are surprised. I love Benzema as a player and person, but what am I supposed to think now?" he continued.

Faubert had a six-month loan stint at los Blancos in 2009 and compared former team-mate Guti to Messi and Zinedine Zidane, while speaking about his sole experience in a Clasico - the infamous 6-2 hammering at the hands of Pep Guardiola's treble winners.

"Guti was like Zidane and Messi," Faubert recalled. "He saw football differently. He was a player worthy of the Ballon d'Or.

"It [the Clasico loss] had been a classic game. We were helpless. I remember how the Barcelona controlled the tempo of the game, with the technical excellence of Xavi [Hernandez], Messi and [Thierry] Henry."

After returning to West Ham from his loan, Faubert wound down his career with experiences in the Turkish Super Lig, and with Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

Zidane feels Kroos was Real Madrid´s missing link

18 November 2015 16:31

Zinedine Zidane believes Toni Kroos was exactly what Real Madrid needed when he arrived from Bayern Munich in July 2014.

Zidane feels the versatile midfielder, who has since developed into a key player at the Santiago Bernabeu, was the missing link at the club and hopes he will stay at Madrid for a long time.

"We signed Toni because we want him to mark an era. We absolutely love him," the former France star told Sport Bild.

"Toni is the type of player we were missing before, the missing link. He is perfect for Madrid.

"He played for Bayern for quite some time and we hope that he will stay at Madrid even longer.

"Madrid's style has changed since he has joined. We knew that he was used to German football and that the Spanish game is something else. The beauty of the game is important in Spain as well, in particular at Madrid.

"But he has adapted right away. You can hardly see that Toni is a German any more."

Kroos has played in 10 of Madrid's 11 Liga fixtures so far this season.

Tebas confident in security measures ahead of El Clasico

18 November 2015 12:38

959638header.jpg

La Liga president Javier Tebas is confident the Spanish police will ensure this weekend's El Clasico will pass without any security problems.

Following the terror attacks in Paris on Friday – which included an attack outside the Stade de France while France faced Germany – two international friendlies were cancelled on Tuesday.

Belgium's clash with Spain was postponed 24 hours before kick-off in Brussels and Germany's encounter with Netherlands in Hannover was called off due to a security incident.

This weekend sees one of the biggest matches in club football take place in Madrid as Barcelona visit fierce rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, but Tebas has full confidence the fixture will go ahead without any concerns.

"The Spanish police are always there to ensure safety in all the matches; moreover, they are well aware as to which games carry greater or lesser risk," he told Marca. "Nobody can doubt the police's ability to know what's what; they know the times we are living in only too well.

"Just as they have in the past, they know how things stand now and will take all the necessary precautions.

"Unfortunately, in this country we have great experience of terrorism. We have suffered it for years and therefore we know, as do the police, what measures must be taken for each situation and in each game.

"I am not in the slightest concerned about what might happen on Saturday, as we are sure that the police know what to do."

He added: "What happened on Friday wasn't any normal event and so it caused a lot of commotion.

"All the measures being taken are logical and correct. Faced with the slightest possibility, any given game must be called off. I trust that here on Saturday there won't be any problems."

Suarez: Real Madrid players will not target Messi´s knee

18 November 2015 13:16

959658header.jpg

Barcelona star Luis Suarez does not expect Real Madrid players to target Lionel Messi's knee in this weekend's Clasico.

Messi has been out of action since hurting his knee against Las Palmas in September, but has returned to training ahead of Saturday's clash at Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is also set to feature despite struggling with a shoulder problem, and Suarez says neither player will be subjected to rough treatment.

"I don't think anybody will try to hit Sergio Ramos' shoulder and I do not think anyone will try to hit Messi's knee either," Suarez said at a news conference on Wednesday.

"We are colleagues and professionals. Messi has been training with the squad, but it is up to the coach to decide whether he will play."

Barcelona hold a three-point lead over Madrid at the top of La Liga heading into Saturday's match, but Suarez does not feel this weekend's game will be decisive in the title race.

"We have to be happy with our recent performances, because we have been doing a good job without the best player in the world, travelling to the Bernabeu three points clear of Madrid," the in-form Uruguayan added.

"Games like the Clasico are the ones that are decided by great players, but it will not be decisive in the race for the Liga title.

"There are still a lot of games left and Atletico Madrid also have a role to play."

Saturday's match represents a special occasion for Suarez as he returns to the stadium where he made his debut for Barcelona last October.

He continued: "It is always a special feeling to play in a stadium like the Santiago Bernabeu. It is even more special because I made my debut for Barcelona at the Bernabeu.

"Madrid are Madrid. We know what we have to do and we must be very focused right from the start."

Benitez denies summit meeting with Ronaldo and Ramos ahead of Barcelona showdown

2120212_heroa.jpg

Nov 20, 2015 12:30:00

Reports in the Spanish press had suggested several Real Madrid players expressed their unhappiness with the side's defensive tactics to their manager in a recent meeting

Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez has been forced to deny reports of a player rebellion ahead of Saturday’s crunch clash with Barcelona.

Los Blancos - despite being La Liga’s top scorers - have been labelled defensive since Benitez took charge and reports in the Spanish press claimed Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo held a meeting with their coach to complain about the playing style.

However, speaking in a press conference on Friday, the Madrid boss rubbished the reports.

“I have a lot of respect for your profession as journalists, but this story about a meeting is completely false,” he said.

It’s also been reported that James Rodriguez is unhappy with how his manager has managed his comeback from an injury.

The Colombian felt he was ready for action a little while ago, but Benitez preferred to err on the side of caution and delay his comeback.

“The first thing that I did when James came back was say hello and chat with him,” the 55-year-old said when asked if there were any problems with the player.

“I want him to be in the best shape possible to come back and score goals for us - he is a brilliant player.”

James did return for the loss to Sevilla last time out, which was the first defeat of the Benitez era.

That saw Madrid slip three points behind Barcelona at the top of the table and the criticism that followed focused on the former Liverpool manager and his tactics.

“I don’t like being in second place, we want to be first, of course, but we have the chance to sort that out on Saturday,” he added.

“I respect other people’s opinions, of course, but for me we’re an attacking team and we will continue to play as we have done, but with more efficiency if possible.”

Messi won't be 100% for Clasico, says Luis Enrique

lionel-messi-cropped_1p5nw5yuinliv1dru8bl80i5cz.jpg

Nov 20, 2015 15:18:13

The Barcelona boss says a decision will be left as late as possible on whether or not the Argentina star begins the match against Real Madrid

Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique has confirmed Lionel Messi is available for Saturday’s Clasico, but stressed he will not be “100 per cent fit” for the trip to Real Madrid.

Enrique wouldn’t be drawn on whether or not Messi will start the match at the Bernabeu, though, saying he will make a decision on his line-up as close to kick off as possible.

The Argentina international has been missing since the end of September when he injured ligaments in his knee against Las Palmas.

However, he has returned to training this week and could feature in this weekend’s top of La Liga clash.

“With respect to Leo, he’s back with the squad and the feelings are positive,” the Barca boss told a press conference.

“There’s still today’s [training] session and things we have to talk about. We know he won’t be 100 per cent, that’s impossible because he’s just coming back form injury, but it is great for us to know that he is recovered.”

Pushed on if Messi would start, Enrique responded: “I don’t have things planned yet. I will speak with Leo today and again tomorrow. An hour before the game, things will be decided.

“I watch all my players training, especially those coming back from injuries. You can see things, but it is the player who can tell you how he is feeling, how confident he is.

“I can tell you Leo is excited about his comeback. The great news is he is fit again.”

Ivan Rakitic is also in contention for the game against Real Madrid despite injuring his calf against BATE Borisov in the Champions League earlier this month.

Initial fears were that the Croatian midfielder would be out for a month, but he has trained this week and Enrique confirmed he is available for selection once again.

Sevilla hit by long-term Achilles blow for Andreolli

By Dom Farrell
Nov 22, 2015 16:45:38

Unai Emery's side have confirmed the defender is set to undergo surgery that will rule him out of action for six to eight months

Sevilla defender Marco Andreolli is set to miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles tendon.

The Italian centre-back sustained the injury to his left leg during the first half of Saturday's 2-0 loss at Real Sociedad – a result that left Unai Emery's team 11th in La Liga.

Following medical tests, Sevilla announced on Sunday that Andreolli would be forced to undergo surgery that means six to eight months on the sidelines.

Emery is short of cover at centre-half as a result and could call upon academy products Diego Gonzalez and Bernardo Cruz to bolster his defensive options.

Europa League holders Sevilla face a must-win Champions League match at Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday.

Rivaldo backs Zidane to take Real Madrid job

22 November 2015 13:29

961935header.jpg

Former Barcelona star Rivaldo believes now is the time for Real Madrid to make Zinedine Zidane their head coach.

Rafael Benitez is under mounting pressure despite only taking charge in June, with a 4-0 Clasico thrashing at home to Liga leaders Barca on Saturday casting further doubt over his future.

Zidane, the head coach of the Madrid Castilla side and former assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu, has long been tipped to take the top job at the club and some reports in Spain have claimed he is poised to replace Benitez following the Clasico debacle.

Rivaldo believes Madrid should follow Barca's example of handing former players Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique the chance in the dugout and replace Benitez with the former France international.

"Congratulations to all the Barcelona players, that was a footballing show at Real Madrid," he wrote on his official Instagram page.

"Real Madrid already have a new coach in Zidane, I believe it's time to give him the opportunity, as Barca did with Pep Guardiola and Luis Henrique [sic]."

La Liga president Tebas: Clasico was hard to watch

The self-confessed Real Madrid fan admits Saturday's match was 'historic' but hopes Los Blancos can recover from the drubbing against rivals Barcelona

Real Madrid fan and La Liga president Javier Tebas has conceded the Clasico was "hard to watch".

Barcelona were outstanding at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, as two goals from Luis Suarez and further strikes from Neymar and Andres Iniesta handing Luis Enrique's men a comprehensive 4-0 victory.

Tebas, speaking on a Liga promotional tour of North America, told AS: "Barcelona played really well and dominated Real Madrid. They were up for the game and set out to defeat their opponents from the outset.

"As a Madrid supporter, last Saturday's Clasico was hard to watch.

"I told my children, who were at the stadium, that they had witnessed an historic game as a 0-4 scoreline [in a Clasico] is not normal.

"This is football and I hope, as do all Madridistas that the club can turn things around."

The win moved Barca six points clear of Madrid while they remained four clear of Atletico, who moved up to second following a 1-0 win at Real Betis on Sunday.

Isco has been banned for two matches after his dismissal in Real Madrid's 4-0 Clasico humbling at the hands of Barcelona.

The Spain playmaker came on as a substitute when Madrid were 3-0 down to their arch-rivals at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, and was shown a straight red card for a wild kick at Neymar six minutes from time.

The Spanish Football Federation announced on Wednesday that Isco will now serve a two-game suspension, meaning he will miss Madrid's La Liga clashes with Eibar and Getafe.

Nuno leaves Valencia post

The 41-year-old's spell in charge of Los Che has come to an end less than 18 months after taking over at Mestalla

Nuno Espirito Santo has resigned from his position as Valencia coach after Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Sevilla in La Liga.

The story broke online while the game was still in process and the Portuguese coach confirmed his decision in a press conference at the Sanchez Pizjuan after the full time whistle.

He explained that he had decided to leave Los Che prior to the defeat to Unai Emery’s side - although he added that his players had no idea it would be his final game in charge.

“Before the game I spoke with the president, with the owner, Peter Lim, and we spoke after the game, too,” he began.

“We are all in agreement that the situation is not good; we all want to do the best for the club.

“That is what I want [for the club] and that's why [I'm leaving].

“It’s been an honour to manage the club and I want to thank all the players I have worked with, Peter Lim and the fans.”

Nuno leaves Valencia ninth in the table with 19 points from their 13 league games to date.

They are also still in with a chance of reaching the knockout rounds of the Champions League with one game to go in the group stages.

The 41-year-old, Jorge Mendes' first ever client, took over at Mestalla last summer after impressing with Portuguese side Rio Ave.

He led the club to a fourth placed finish in his first season in charge, but things have turned sour in his second term and large sections of the support have turned against him.

Phil Neville joined Nuno as his assistant manager earlier this year following Ian Cathro’s departure for Newcastle, but there’s not yet been any word on what this will mean for the former Manchester United and Everton player.

Valencia play Barakaldo in the Copa del Rey in midweek, before hosting Barcelona next weekend in the league.
