SINGAPORE: A new face from the People’s Action Party was spotted at a tree-planting event with Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean at Pasir-Ris Punggol GRC on Saturday (Aug 1).

Ms Sun Xueling, an investment director at Temasek Holdings, said it was the first formal event she was attending. The 36-year-old added that she has been active in grassroots activities.

Commenting on his plans for the constituency ahead of the next general election, Mr Teo said: "Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, especially the Punggol area, is growing very quickly and what we want to do is to help families here settle in as quickly as possible and form a community.”

In the last General Election, the People's Action Party (PAP) won Pasir Ris-Punggol with 64.8 per cent of the vote against the Singapore Democratic Alliance.

When asked about his take on Opposition parties who may be keen to contest Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC this time round, Mr Teo who is the PAP's 1st Assistant Secretary-General said it is not the party's focus. “Our focus is really on making sure that we look after the residents as well as we can,” he added.

Mr Teo on Saturday launched the Clean and Green SG50 Mass Tree Planting event at Punggol Promenade. As part of the initiative, 5,500 trees will be planted at locations such as park connectors and parks across Singapore over the next three months. About 20,000 people will be involved in planting over 100 species of trees that are native to Singapore.
