Here we have a fucktard minister who was an eye doctor, and never operated any sort of entreprenuerial activity, yet he is advising hawkers on their food costs and operating costs. hahahahhaha. He says their rent is only a small component of their cost. Why do these retards think they know everything and feel that they have to comment on everything. Has he ever operated a food stall? If not, then where is he getting his information from? An actual hawker Douglas Ng actually made a comment about the costs, but Vivian the Chindian saw fit to rebut this hawker and say that he is wrong and that he should do his sums carefully. The irony is that this Chindian Bala cannot control his own costs. He was given a budget of $104 million for the YOG and fucked it up until it cost $387 million. I think we can all conclude that he is the one that cannot do his sum, not Douglas Ng. With this kind of standard for Minister, will some people in the Holland Bukit Timah GRC kindly vote this moron out.



Rental costs a 'small fraction' of running a hawker stall: Vivian Balakrishnan

In a Facebook reply to hawker Douglas Ng, the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources says his ministry has done three things to bring down rental costs for hawkers.

SINGAPORE: The main cost drivers for running a hawker stall are "ingredients and manpower", while rental rates are a "small fraction" of the overall costs, said Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan in a Facebook post on Monday (Jul 27).

The MEWR Minister was responding to a Facebook post by a young hawker Douglas Ng, who runs the Fishball Story stall at Golden Mile Food Centre, who shared his observations on the challenges hawkers are facing when considering to bid for a stall at the new Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre run by NTUC Foodfare.

In Mr Ng's post on Sunday, he said basic ingredients are "so expensive", yet hawkers have to abide by a price ceiling set by the hawker centre operator. "How can we expect hawkers to make a decent living?" he wrote.

"They set a price for spaghetti S$5.80 and fishball noodle S$2.70. I just think it's not fair. Our costs are really high too," Mr Ng wrote.

"They said 'experts' have calculated these cost. Everything they say is transparent. I am a hawker myself...and I know about what costs are. It is only getting higher and it's tougher."

He ended his post noting that while it is a "gamble" to run a stall at the new hawker centre, he is willing to do so.







REDUCING RENTAL COSTS AT HAWKER CENTRES

In response, Dr Balakrishnan said hawker centres are a "unique feature of life in Singapore, where everyone can eat and socialise in an informal, unpretentious place with affordable and delicious local food".

He acknowledged that there have "always been questions about rental rates", and his ministry has reduced rental costs in three ways.

First, it has increased the supply of hawker stalls by building new centres, and second, stalls now have to be personally operated.

"They are not a way for landlords to make money," the Minister said. "We did this by removing the practice of assignments and subletting. This removed speculation from hawker rentals."

Third, it abolished the concept of "reserve rent" for hawker stalls, he said. In the past, NEA would reject bids less than 85 per cent of the assessed market rent, but now, it accepts "all valid competitive bids".

"Some stalls have been rented for as low as S$10 a month," Dr Balakrishnan said, adding that NEA publishes the results of tenders every month and results can be seen on the agency's website.

He added that he has "made it very clear" to NTUC Foodfare that they are not to charge high rents at the new hawker centre, with the priority being to have "good, affordable food for my residents in Bukit Panjang".

The Minister concluded by calling on Mr Ng and other potential hawkers to do their sums carefully. "Please do not bid high," he stressed.

MCYS minister: We miscalculated on YOG budget

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has admitted that his team had miscalculated the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) budget.

Speaking at the People's Action Party (PAP) rally in Clementi on Wednesday night, Dr Balakrishnan explained what happened to the YOG budget by relating it to his conversation with Thaddaeus Wee, an undergraduate, who asked him about it four days ago on the LRT train at Bukit Panjang.

"We got the initial estimates of the money to be spent on the YOG wrong," Dr Balakrishnan frankly told the 1,000-strong crowd that gathered on the m&d-soaked field in Clementi.

He explained that the games exceeded its original budget of S$104 million by over three times because it was the first time that such an event was organised and there was no other model for reference.

Furthermore, it took more than a year after the International Olympic Council (IOC) chose Singapore as the venue for the YOG before details could be confirmed.

"We realised there would be all 26 sports and all the athletes were to stay for two weeks, so we did the sums and went to see the PM."

He revealed that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong then asked him if he would have bid for the YOG if he had known it would cost more than S$300 million.

To this, Dr Balakrishnan said that he would still do it, and had no regrets.

"Whatever criticisms, I am proud of the YOG and of the athletes, proud of the 50,000 volunteers who made great sacrifices to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime event," he said, acknowledging that people are entitled to their opinions.

The 50-year-old, who heads the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), insisted that his team "did not overspend or waste or squander" the S$387 million budget allocated to the project. In fact, he proudly declared that they spent much less.

The leader of the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC team reassured Singaporeans that the increased budget did not eat into the other expenses of his ministry.

"The YOG had a separate budget and we did not cut back on the other expenses for MCYS."

He added that 70 per cent of the budget went to paying local companies to provide services for the Games, which would in turn help them gain international recognition.

Further in his speech, Dr Balakrishnan said that the three main concerns for the younger generation this election were respect, a fair and just society and a land of opportunity.

He also said that this election would be about re-establishing the relationship between the people, and the PAP.

But rental is fixed cost and ingredients and manpower costs are more flexible than rental.

I think that many if not all hawkers will tulan like shit when they hear this crap coming from his mouth. I don't think there is one hawker who will tell you rent and the associated cleaning cost is not a big item to their pricing. For a Chindian who never ran a hawker stall before and over budget by 3 times the YOG to open his mouth like he know the business is bullshit. Oppo parties should walk around all the hawker centres in singapore and show the hawkers what he said. I think that's 10,000 or more votes against the PAP right there.

Rental must be pegg with market rate ( aka ) Pte rate. This is how they run the whole show.

For example, i rented a stall in Food court Marine Parade with Food republic. I pay them 10K nett per month including cleaning fees. Right beside me, NEA run hawker stall is asking me to go over and they slash the price to $1000 per month inclusive of Cleaning fees. Of course, i will jump ship right away. Singapore is geographically small and very accessible.

Next the Food court Operator will knock on the doors to NEA and ask why are they offering $500 per month for the store to me and others ? This will have a nett effect on the rental collection for the land lord, and possibiliy in long run the tender price for the food court from Shopping mall and shopping mall to SLA.

Next ,if NEA is to open hawker like this all over the island with the same rental. All S11 and other kopitiam will be done in no time. It is hard to let go of rent seeking mentality from the government. It so easy and not much work need to be done.

Food prices consist of rental and transport cost ( fuel and Salary). If the property cost remain high and the COE remaIN sky high, the food supplier will have to charge that into their food cost to the hawker. Hawker has to pass them down the line.

So, one big round. it boils down to government policy. If you let your property appreciate too fast and your wage become stagnant. It will lead to inproportionate growth in a country.The rich will always have better resources and information flow then the lesser mortal. The role of the government is to strike a balance and not to partake in business with the Pte Enterprise, ripping their people they suppose to take care off.

Am I correct to say that, out of $260 per month for PA recipients, $100 goes to rental, power supply and S&C and leaving them with only $5 a day to live on? Am I correct to say that any basic meal in any hawker centre is already $2.50 to $3.00 per meal? Therefore, is it too much to ask for just three meals a day as an entitlement for the PA recipients?
