SINGAPORE - An operations supervisor who took upskirt videos of his victims in Housing Board lifts in Bukit Panjang was jailed for 18 weeks on Monday (July 27).

Mohammad Nazrin Sapingi had pleaded guilty to 10 counts of insulting the modesty of a woman. He had 60 other charges - including one of having obscene films - considered during his sentencing.

The court heard that the 27-year-old took videos only inside lifts "because there is nobody around". He further stated he did not film in the MRT or shopping centres as there were many people around and he was "scared".

The offences were committed between August 2013 and May last year.

Forensic examination of his computer, seized after his arrest on July 30 last year, showed that he had stored upskirt videos on its hard drive .

He had sorted the videos he took by the colour and nature of his victims' underwear.

On May 29 last year, he got into a lift with a 26-year-old woman .

While standing behind her, he moved his mobile phone underneath her skirt and started recording.

When the lift reached the level of the victim's unit, she felt something touch her inner thigh. She turned around, and saw him retracting his hand with the cellphone.

She asked what he was doing and said she would call the police. He fled from the scene.

During investigation, he told police that he had seen the victim alight from a cab and had followed her to the lift.

Seeking a total sentence of 18 to 24 weeks' jail, Deputy Public Prosecutor Kenny Yang said there were many victims in this case and that the offences were pre-meditated.

District Judge Christopher Goh said this was not the first upskirt offence he was dealing with and he did not think it would be the last.

He reiterated that women should not be afraid and should be protected from persons committing such offences. The maximum punishment for the offence is one year's jail and a fine.
