No loveseat before marriage, says cinema
Muslim couples wishing to purchase a couple seat are required to produce their marriage card at the Lotus Five Star (LFS) cinema in Bandar Seri Iskandar in Perak.
LFS Seri Iskandar cinema assistant Siti Hana Yusof said the requirement had been in place since the cinema opened last November.
“It applies only to couples who are Muslim or when one of the pair is Muslim,” she said today.
She said there had been no complaints about the rule although some customers had expressed shock.
"Many are usually surprised but if they are Muslim and not married, they would usually just purchase tickets for the regular seats.”
While the marital status of the walk ins are checked, those who purchase couple seats online are not. Nor are they stopped from entering the screening hall after they had collected their tickets at the counter.
Asked if the rule had come on the heels of the Perak Tengah district council’s advice to “curb immoral acts among youths”, as reported earlier, she said that she could not confirm.
"The management has instructed that this be not revealed at the moment," she said.
When contacted, an LFS management staff member, who declined to be named, said the managing director will comment on the matter tomorrow.
Perak Tengah District council representatives also declined to
confirm if the rule had been recommended by the local authority. Council head Mad Dan Hassan was not reachable for comment as he was still on Hari Raya leave.
A notice at the cinema states that, “Couples who are not ‘mahram’ are not allowed on the couple seats."
Mahram is an Islamic term that refers to unmarriageable kin, such as blood relatives.
LFS Cinema in D'Mall shopping centre is only cinema in Perak Tengah district. It has 12 couple seats in each of its seven screening halls.
LFS cinemas in Ipoh and Kampar do not have couple seats. – July 21, 2015.
