Teenager gang-raped in Botanic Garden

Jul 20, 2015, 01.49 AM IST

HOWRAH: A 16-year-old girl was found gang-raped in an isolated spot in Botanic Garden here on Sunday. The teenager, who had injuries on her body, has been admitted to Howrah State General Hospital, and is in a semi-conscious state and speaking incoherently.

Howrah's chief medical officer of health Bhavani Das told TOI: "The girl was gang-raped and we have come to this conclusion after carefully examining her. She is 16 years old and told doctors that she came to the Garden with her lover, without informing her family. Since she is in deep mental stress, we have decided not to quiz her further tonight. Let her come to her senses first."

A security guard at the Garden found the girl lying unconscious near Prain Lake, adjacent to the great banyan tree.

The guard informed the Garden director, who in turn called the Botanical Garden police station. Police took the girl to the hospital, where she is admitted to the female emergency ward.

"Her house it at Murarai in Birbhum. As she was being pressurized by the family members for marriage she fled from her home and took a train to Howrah. At Howrah station she met an unknown youth who took her to Botanical Garden. The person gave her a cold drink and after taking that she became unconscious. She didn't know what happened after that," ADC (Headquarter), Howrah Commissionerate, Tathagata Basu said.

CCTV footage shows the girl entering the Garden with a youth and then moving to an isolated spot. The youth is absconding. "We have started a suo motu case and will interrogate the girl once she is in a condition to speak. We are surprised how did it (the sexual assault) go unnoticed? If she is doped and raped in an unconscious state, then it's a different issue but otherwise she will shout. Lots of questions remain unanswered," said a senior investigating officer.

Speaking to TOI, Garden director Arabindo Pramanick said: "This is shocking. Yesterday, there were two festivals and as today is Sunday, so the crowd in the Garden was huge. Naturally, it was becoming difficult for the guards to manage. In the evening, when the crowd was thin, they noticed the girl. It was around 4.30 when they informed me and I called police. They took her to hospital around 5pm but till 9pm police didn't give any update about the girl".
