A TEAM of Swedish and Japanese experts have been appointed to conduct an independent assessment of the North-South and East-West lines' power supply and trackside infrastructure, following the massive July 7 train disruption.

The team consists of four experts from Sweden's Parsons Brinkerhoff and a traction power expert from Meidensha Corporation, a Tokyo-based company with extensive experience in power supply.

They will be led by Mats Onner from Parsons, and Hiroto Ikeda from Meidensha, and will be given "full access to the infrastructure and installations along the North-South-East-West Line during non-service hours", said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a statement yesterday.

"The team of experts, closely assisted by engineers from LTA and (rail operator) SMRT, will also be analysing the data collated by LTA and SMRT engineers since the incident," the statement added.

Their assessment will focus on identifying the root cause of the power trip that caused the disruption, which saw the system shut down for more than two hours and left more than 250,000 commuters stranded.
The assessment will also propose areas for improvement to prevent a recurrence.

"They will also review the current condition of the power supply and trackside installations, as well as provide recommendations to enhance the overall system and its maintenance," said LTA, adding that this assessment is expected to be completed next month.

The experts were selected for their experience in railway engineering, said LTA.

It added that Parsons was the consultant for mechanical services on both lines, while Meidensha had designed and installed the power supply systems on them.

In the first place if the Swedish company was the the who installed all the MRT train
SMRT should have let the Swedish company continue rather than out source cheaper material
from China!! You know China is good at manufacturing CLONE!!

That's why MRT train always breaks down when you replace with Non Original/copy stuff!!

I hope they suggest the number of sinkie technicians that should be replaced. The sinkie technicians should be made to bear a large part of the blame for their inability to learn technical skills fast enough from their foreign colleagues.

what every one has forgotten to ask is will the investigation team be truly independent? For sure not. Their "independent assessment" will almost certainly highlight flaws and lapses in SMRT, and may even be critical of the incompetent SMRT top management, lack of experienced professionals, ex SAF idiots who don't know what they do, etc. Do we really expect Desmond Quack to allow a report critical to him and his team to be released?

Why don't they just hire a foreign expert to run the show and be done with it.

I have always advocated that those with lower education should go for training and higher education.

The only way to remain employable is to keep oneself relevant to the continual change in job expectation. One can stay relevant to the needs of the job through continual learning and re-training.

The first operation head in DQ's first team was a chap from hk. He left quietly, I think after the first screw up. Having worked with many hk engineers in the 90's, find them to be equally screwed up. They only have superficial knowledge but talk like everything also know. Always ready to try new gadgets because company pay for it and they get to learn something new. Their worst attitude is "if the sky drops down, just treat it like a blanket". Because of this, they are daredevil doing scary things and leaving shits for others to clear. After 1997 hand over, many of them went back as the uncertainty was over. They left lots of shit with their great ideas and trying out of new stuff that did not work.

not to say that hk mtr engineers are good, but at the very least there's got to be one subject matter expert who's good enough to provide an outside view from another operator's perspective. hk mtr is screwing up too as they can't figure out the root cause of last year's breakdown. for now they are blaming faulty insulators.

i hope the japanese experts recommend hari kiri by the way of falling on their stomach on a samurai sword tied to the rail tracks with cable ties.
