[h=1]Straits Times: There are no cabs because many Singapore taxi drivers are busy gambling[/h]admin / 3 hours ago July 15, 2015

Senior Straits Times Transport journalist, Christopher Tan, believes he has found the answer to why there are always a shortage of taxis during peak hours especially on rainy days – they are busy gambling. In his article titled “Where are the cabs when you need them?”, he claimed that on Friday nights, many taxi drivers are busy gambling at the betting centres:
“On horse-racing days – Fridays and weekends – carparks at satellite betting centres are also filled with taxis. There are 10 such centres, and the most popular one is in Bukit Merah. A recent check revealed more than 50 cabs were parked there between 6pm and 7pm on a Friday.”

The Straits Times journalist later quoted several management executives from different mainstream taxi companies like Prime, Premier and TransCab who agreed with his assertions, and only quoted one taxi driver who was gambling at the Singapore Casino.

However, according to taxi drivers States Times Review spoke to, most of them avoid driving on a rainy day because it is more likely to have an accident and that they cannot afford to have their cars sent for repairs even for a few days. During peak hours, taxi drivers usually have advanced bookings and one taxi driver, on the conditions of anonymity, said that it is absurd to suggest taxi drivers avoid picking up customers during the profitable peak period when they are already avoiding meal times during the peak period.

The Singapore Straits Times is ranked 154th in press freedom and under the stringent jurisdiction of the Singapore censorship ministry, the Ministry of Communications and Information.

Simple solution. Just close the casinos. This will of course never happen under the PAP.

Taxi drivers are businessmen in their own right.
What they do with their time and money is their right.
The companies renting out the cabs have no right to dictate - so long as they paid their rentals.

Maybe the ceo, VPs, directors, should help out during peak hours and drive their taxis for that few hours. That will go a long way to alleviate the crunch, what does the forumers here think?

There will always be a gap or you can't get a cab during the peak hour. If everyone can get a cab at the Peak hour, that mean there are lots of cab driver around. I worry for the economy too.

2nd, if you can get a cab easily at Peak hour, how are the cab drivers are going to make a decent living or meaningful living ? How about super off peak hour ? Will there be enough passengers for the cabs ?

The guy who say such things like cab driver going gambling is off track, blah blah. I think he needs to have his head examine. Maybe too much bonues and salary without any meangingful output is blocking off his brain cell.

As usual, cannot solve the problem, deflect the blame to others.....

The industry observers only said it was 5% to 10% drivers that are habitual gamblers, they are paying their rentals and the taxi operators are still meeting their availability KPIs so where is the problem...

Taxi problems same same as 30-40 years. No rocket science and yet the problems remain.

Whether they choose to drive during peak hours or not, it is their business. They are paying rental. Until the authorities come up with something magical, problems will stay.

the last i checked singapore is a free country
people have freedom to gamble
even taxi drivers

here you can see the opposition if win power
will bring more control
will bring less freedom than PAP

singapore will truly be a horrible place if pap lose in next GE

The PAP IB can argue until the cows come home but i'll whack those who behaves like tyrants, who decides for the people how they should run their lives, restrict freedom of speech, enforces bans and censorship, whether they are PAP IB, or opposition IB. It's very easy to piss them off.

You will never find the PAP IB posting negative news of their valuable trade partners like China, North Korea, Russia, Vietnam and more... most of the time if not always, i am the one doing it. Proof is below.

Re: Straits Times: There are no cabs because many Singapore taxi drivers are busy gam

It is true

...but not the whole truth...because if the hirer gets to drive the taxi, he can have a private transport at any time he wishes...to pick up mistress, to go for massage, to go KTV, to go drinking, gambling and at the same time, he can pick up passengers only when he song song.

As the man had said.."if I won in gambling, I could well afford the daily rental..." So, if he could afford the daily rental from a side business, the taxi became his private vehicle to ferry his goods and whatever he fancied.

Why this happened? Look at the people running the taxi companies. If those top guys do not bother to improve the system, the hirers will always be the monkeys.

Taxi drivers are businessmen in their own right.
What they do with their time and money is their right.
The companies renting out the cabs have no right to dictate - so long as they paid their rentals.

This is precisely the reason why so many ex-professionals chose to become taxi drivers...a vehicle at their own time to use, no road tax and no maintenance cost, no COE to worry about. They can run a side business with the taxi as private transport and no one needs to know.

Limpeh now thinking to resign from 9 to 5 job and become taxi driver, beats taking bus and MRT train with those foreigners...

..it does not mean a thing. Jusr drive all over the island to chiak hong with the mistress to look for good makan spots and your mileage is reached in no time.

Limpeh's friend, a taxi driver, kept a mistress and he chose to drive night shift so he could bonk her and the wife did not know a thing...A clever way to kill 2 birds with one stone.

In those good old days, old uncles without eductation and spoke no English drove taxi to feed families, maybe 4 to 6 mouths to feed in one family. Where got time and money to gamble?

Taxi drivers then were looked down upon in same category as the menial labourers. Today, the taxi drivers are English speaking and ex-PMETs. See the difference?

Different clientele requires different approach in solving the problem but the top guys running these taxi companies today are still in self denial and hibernation.
