Manchester United have joined the chase for Everton defender John Stones.

And they are prepared to offer out-of-favour Jonny Evans as bait in a player-plus-cash deal to try to beat off competition from Chelsea and Manchester City.

United boss Louis van Gaal, who has missed out on long-term target Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid, is still in the market for a new centre-half.

They have yet to make a formal approach but have made discreet enquiries about Stones, 21, as the bidding war hots up. Chelsea have already had two offers turned down but are confident that the England prospect wants to move to *Stamford Bridge..........

Martinez will sit up if we put Jones in. I think they will demand more cash if we use Evans as lever. Phil Jones has potential but it hasn't quite turn out the way we expected. In fact, the player's form has dipped over the years in part due to his frequent injuries and the lengthy time it takes for him to recover. I can't see how we can get the best of players like that and besides he can only play two positions at best but CD is not one of them.

SAF vision was to see Jones and Smalling holding the CDs area for a long time, I still believe in that too... they just need more chances to gel

I have no idea why we still keeping Januzaj, is he really that good? -_-"

Think both will be around for awhile. Honestly, they both had their chances. But Jones has got the physique in defence.:p

As for the young Belgian, he has ball skills. But never quite got on the bus (so to speak), but for flashes now and then

You seem to get orgasm with MU's failings :p. We can take sarcasm and backbiting under our chin. Splashing money on the expensive slave trade (players) is 1 way to hedge your bets to be on top of game. Sometimes, they turn out to be duds (as we see many has fallen on wayside). No guarantee to success. Btw, that D Luiz is a joke

All's said, we wait with relish to see EPL start

Smalling and Jones cannot gel for the simple reason that one or the other will be injured at some point. They've tried it on numerous occasion with mixed results. Darmian looks like an intelligent player and I reckon he'll make a good partnership with Smalling in the middle with Shaw on the left and Valencia on the right. IMHO, this would be the best quartet for defence.

Januzaj has ability. His development may be slow due to a lack of first team football. I noticed he has bulk up quite abit and it will do alot of good for his confidence.

We signed Pedro?

Manchester United to complete £20m Pedro transfer in next 48 hours - and then consider Pepe switch
17:46, 3 AUGUST 2015
BY JOHN CROSS http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/manchester-united-complete-20m-pedro-6187558

United have missed out on a move for Sergio Ramos but his defensive colleague is thought to be available, with the Red Devils desperate for a centre-back

LVG is set to tie up a £20m deal for Pedro in the next 48 hours - and is now being offered Real Madrid bad boy Pepe.

Barcelona winger Pedro has been offered a four year deal with a further one-year option and is keen to move to Manchester United to strengthen his Euro 2016 chances.

Pedro has fallen down the pecking order at the Nou Camp but Barcelona are still holding out for the £24m buy-out clause in his contract.

United boss Van Gaal is confident of getting the deal done and could also consider a move for Portuguese defender Pepe - after missing out on Sergio Ramos.

Van Gaal could turn his attentions towards Pepe. Ramos appears to have played United to get himself a new deal at Real Madrid which was a big blow because Van Gaal is desperate for a new centre half.

But veteran Pepe, 32, is now likely to be behind Ramos and Raphael Varane under new boss Rafa Benitez.

That may tempt Real Madrid to move Pepe on before the end of the window and he is now being offered round potential interested clubs.

LVG is a desperate manager and it will all end in tears for the United faithful. He wants to break another record purchase-first DM and now Bale.
Pepe is a poor fit to the squad. Can't wait for the Dutchman's 3 year term to end..........We are going nowhere with this guy.

Rafael: Man Utd defender to join Lyon for undisclosed fee

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/33767526

Rafael da Silva will join French club Lyon from Manchester United on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old right-back, who has two Brazil caps, moved to United along with his twin brother Fabio from Fluminense in 2008.
However, he had fallen out of favour at the club under Louis van Gaal, starting just six league games last season.

"I want to thank Manchester United fans for all the love during those eight years," Rafael tweeted.

He was left out of United's squad for their pre-season tour of the United States, before Torino right-back Matteo Darmian joined the Old Trafford club.

Rafael will join the Ligue 1 runners-up having made 170 appearances for Manchester United, scoring five goals.
He won three Premier League titles, the Club World Cup and the League Cup during his seven years at United.
Rafael's brother Fabio has already left United, having joined Cardiff City in January 2014.

Angel di Maria transfer: Manchester United squeeze £3m more out of PSG after winger goes AWOL
22:30, 4 AUGUST 2015
BY DAVID MADDOCK http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/angel-di-maria-transfer-manchester-6193917

French giants to pay £46m for star who posed for a photo with their owner when he didn't have permission to be in Qatar PLUS: De Gea latest

Di Maria's snap angered United — and cost PSG
Di-Maria-main.jpg

Furious Louis van Gaal forced Paris Saint-Germain to pay an extra £3million for Angel di Maria after the player posted a picture of himself with the French club's owner in Qatar.

Manchester United winger Di Maria finally had a medical in the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday, but Old Trafford officials had earlier pulled the plug until they were able to thrash out new terms.

Van Gaal demanded £46m after the French club originally believed a deal had been done at £43m.

Di Maria had been given permission by United to talk to French champions PSG — but not to fly out to Qatar.

The Argentina international had already been fined two weeks' wages by Van Gaal for failing to meet up with United on their recent US pre-season tour.

United are still keen on Barcelona wide-man Pedro, and he is expected to say goodbye to the Nou Camp on Thursday when Roma visit for a pre-season friendly.

The Old Trafford giants have offered £20m and are confident of getting their man — Pedro could even be a spectator for their opening game of the season with Tottenham on Saturday.

Now Van Gaal will turn his attention to David de Gea, and may even axe him for the season opener.

The United boss had insisted he wanted his keeper to see out the last year of his contract, despite the Spaniard's desire to return home to Madrid with Real.

De Gea though, has looked a shadow of himself in pre-season, and that has left his Dutch manager calculating whether it is time to cut his losses, and sell the keeper to generate funds for a replacement.

United had demanded a world record fee (the current highest for a keeper is £32.6m) for their number one, even though he has just a year left on his deal, and the Bernabeu giants refused point-blank to entertain such a fee.

Now though, the Old Trafford hierarchy are ready to consider a compromise figure, with Real Madrid encouraged to believe they would get their man for closer to the £20m mark.

Van Gaal was disappointed with the performance of his Spanish international in the final pre-season game (ironically, against PSG), when he was well below his best.

De Gea has also suddenly started to struggle with injury niggles and there is a growing feeling at United they would be better getting a fee for him, rather than see him sit out his final year on the bench.

Real Madrid are desperate to sign him after letting their number one for the past 15 years, Iker Casillas, leave for Porto.

It has now become a game of poker as the transfer window ticks down into its final four weeks.

Van Gaal will seriously consider dropping De Gea against Tottenham but must consider the facts that new signing and likely alternative Sergio Romero hasn't played a match of any kind since the Copa America final on July 4.

It seems likely Argentina international Romero will be given a chance soon though.

The Old Trafford club are also waiting to land Ajax keeper Jasper Cillessen but they are loathe to complete that transfer for fear of weakening their bargaining position by signalling to Real Madrid that they have signed De Gea's replacement.

* ARGENTINIAN defender Nicolas Otamendi has held peace talks with Valencia and has agreed to stay - unless any club meets the £40m buy-out clause, writes John Cross.

Man Utd transfer news: Louis van Gaal offers £22m Barcelona star Pedro key role with Wayne Rooney
Manchester United hope attraction of forming new-look front three with Rooney and Depay will convince Spaniard to join up

Pedro has scored 96 goals for Barcelona
PEDRO1_3397765b.jpg

By Mark Ogden8:43PM BST 04 Aug 2015 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...na-star-Pedro-key-role-with-Wayne-Rooney.html

Louis van Gaal has offered Pedro Rodriguez a role alongside Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay in a new-look front three at Manchester United in order to convince the Barcelona forward to complete a £22m move to Old Trafford.

Spain international Pedro, who has a £22m escape clause in his contract at the Nou Camp, has been urged to stay at the club by manager Luis Enrique.

But with the 28-year-old determined to escape the shadow of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar at Barcelona to secure regular football elsewhere, Pedro could make his farewell appearance for the European champions against Roma in the traditional Gamper Trophy season curtain-raiser at the Nou Camp on Wednesday before finalising a transfer to United.

Pedro has told friends he is keen to move to Old Trafford and it is understood that Van Gaal has made it clear to the Canary Islander that he would form part of an attacking three with Rooney and summer signing Depay after choosing to adopt a 4-3-3 formation this season.

After tinkering with a variety of formations last season, Van Gaal believes the three-pronged attack – last used by United when Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez helped secure a Premier League-Champions League double in 2008 – offers the flexibility and fluidity required to challenge in the league and in Europe.

Having sold Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce this summer after rejecting the chance to sign Radamel Falcao on a permanent basis, Van Gaal believes that Rooney can score in excess of 20 goals this season as the spearhead of United’s attack.

And the Dutchman is convinced that Pedro, who scored 98 goals in 318 games for Barcelona, can provide the goal threat and pace on the right side of the three in order to complete his attacking option at Old Trafford.

With top target Robert Lewandowski proving unattainable at Bayern Munich, Van Gaal is confident that Rooney, Depay and Pedro, supported by Adnan Januzaj and teenager James Wilson, can prove a prolific forward unit, with Javier Hernandez also in contention should United fail to find a buyer for the Mexican this month.

An official bid for Pedro is expected to be lodged by United once Angel di Maria’s £44.3m transfer to Paris Saint-Germain is completed within the next 24 hours.

Revolving door: Angel di Maria is leaving with Pedro likely to come in
ADM_pedro_3392868b.jpg

Di Maria, a £59.7m buy from Real Madrid last August, is set to undergo a medical in Qatar before flying to the French capital to rubber-stamp his move. But while Pedro remains a Barcelona player, coach Enrique is hopeful that he can persuade the forward to stay.

“I want him to stay, “ Enrique said. “If there are changes, that will be down to the player.

"He's a fantastic, top-class player who won everything and showed for club and country what he can do.
“It's not nice to talk about negatives, I like to think things will work well. Maybe some players might leave, but right now, there's nothing to comment on.”

Meanwhile, United have discovered the full cost of missing out on Champions League football last season by falling to 20th position in Uefa’s latest club coefficient rankings – four places below neighbours Manchester City.

Pedro has told friends he is planning on moving to Manchester. United will learn their opponents in this month’s two-legged Champions League Play-Off when the draw is made on Friday morning.

But having failed to qualify for either the Champions League or Europa League last season, United have now plummeted down Uefa’s coefficient table due to their inability to collect points last term.

Having played in three Champions League finals between 2008 and 2011, winning one and losing two, United had maintained a top five coefficient position in recent seasons, with Uefa ranking clubs on the basis of their performance over five seasons.

But with the 2010-11 campaign now being discounted from the rankings, United have lost the points amassed on their run to the Wembley final against Barcelona, which was won the Spanish giants. City, who have struggled to impress in the Champions League, have been rewarded for four years of participation in the competition by climbing to sixteenth in the latest coefficient table. Manuel Pellegrini’s team are set to claim a Pot Two position due to points earned on their run to last season’s second round.

It's sad to see Rafael leave. Gives a 100 percent, plays with a lot of passion and yes reckless at times. Supports the attack very well unlike Valencia.
