At the IPS dialogue with LHL moderated by Fareed Zakaria on 2 July 2015, Zakaria posed this issue to LHL - On the dominance of countries such as the US, Sweden and Israel in innovation, science and technology, Zakaria said these communities are common in that there is a culture of a lack of respect for or challenging authority. " You(LHL) spent six hours yesterday in a court trying to do this, to instil a culture of respect. And isn't it exactly the opposite of what you need for your economic future?"

LHL :"You want people to stand up, not scrape and bow. But if you don't have a certain NATURAL ARISTOCRACY in the system, people who are respected because they have earned that and we level everything down to the lowest denominator, then I think society will lose out..."

That's why I send my kids to elite schools and junior colleges instead of garbage schools like Damai Sec. My parents were peasants, and I fought my way up into the Singapore aristocracy. Now that we are nobles, we should behave like nobles and be educated like nobles.

I agree with LHL. A society where everyone is treated equally means there are no incentives to strive to reach the top.

There has to be a stratification in order for meritocracy to work.

Imagine working in a company where the chance of promotion is zilch because there are no senior positions to strive for. Everyone is equal and there are no monetary rewards for achievement. It would be a disaster.
