Businesses need to 'raise the bar in productivity': Iswaran

Even as the economy undergoes restructuring, Second Minister for Trade and Industry S Iswaran says Singapore is in a good position to overcome the hurdles and achieve long-term growth.

SINGAPORE: Businesses in Singapore need to raise the bar in productivity in order for the economy to achieve sustainable growth.

Second Minister for Trade and Industry S Iswaran said this on Tuesday (Jun 30) at an SG50 Luncheon organised by the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC).

Improvements in productivity will help reduce the reliance on foreign labour, which now accounts for one-third of Singapore's total workforce. Even as the economy undergoes restructuring, Mr Iswaran said Singapore is in a good position to overcome the hurdles and achieve long-term growth.

"I cite amongst other things the fact that we have today – compared to 50 years ago – a much better educated workforce, deeper skills we have the infrastructure and resources to invest in new capabilities in order to position ourselves for future opportunities so we are better equipped to face the challenges,” said Mr Iswaran. “What we need now is to come together and confront the challenges and ensure that we sustain our successes in the country.”

The chamber also on Tuesday officially welcomed its 158th president, Mr Chaly Mah.

He said that going forward, productivity improvement and innovation, as well as a mindset change, are needed to help sustain Singapore's economic success.

"The change in mindset means we need to continue to be much more competitive and businesses need to change their mindset that the restrictions on foreign labour is the norm, and they need to continue to push themselves to improve productivity to be successful,” said Mr Mah.

I don't know what are these spewing about.

Singapore already priced themselves out of real market. We are right smack in between our poor neighbors. We can't compete with them base on cost because we have priced ourselves out many times. We are essentially competing with our lesser neighbor with the same pool of MNC. We are still doing it, and of course we are bound to lose.

Another problem is that we suffered because we can't innovate because it is such a high cost country. Any start up will be swallowed up by Temasak Holding stable of companies.

Elites talk about productivity. If a job can must be done by 2 to 3 person. You can't force it down and ask 1 person to complete that. That will be wonderful on theory, but it is not practical at all. All this mother fuckers scholar can only talk cock and do nothing right all day.

Yes the ministers seem to be trumpeting productivity without really understanding what they are talking about.
Improve skillsets so that Singapore can move into high value add industries, yes. In such instance our labor cannot be easily replaced by foreign labor. Improve productivity so that we can serve 20 hamburgers per hour instead of 15, no. We don't need that kind of productivity.

Can't they just bloody look at what Japan and Korea does? Idiots

Shows how ineffective the PAP government. The issue of productivity has been there for decades ...there was the productivity campaign, government grants to help raise productivity etc.
We are still dealing with it. Why? Because the government brings in foreign workers to displace sinkees. Companies just won't invest in employees or in capital equipment.

That is the problem with sinkies, always satisfied with being mediocre. Productivity is always important, can always be improved. This is why we need hungry immigrants to steal your lunch!
