Amos Yee remanded at IMH for 2 weeks

A doctor's report states that the teen blogger may suffer from autism-spectrum disorder. Pending a psychiatric report from the Institute of Mental Health, he may have to undergo mandatory treatment.

SINGAPORE: Teenage blogger Amos Yee Pang Sang, 16, has been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for two weeks pending a psychiatric report.


Before the State Courts on Tuesday (Jun 23), District Judge Jasvender Kaur said that a report by Dr Munidasa Winslow said that Yee may suffer from autism-spectrum disorder. This emerged from the reformative training suitability report, which found the accused physically and mentally suitable for reformative training.


As such, Judge Kaur said that she is exploring other sentencing options, including a mandatory treatment order.


A mandatory treatment order provides treatment for offenders suffering from psychiatric conditions that are susceptible to treatment, where the accused will have to undergo psychiatric treatment. It is meted out in lieu of imprisonment.


It was introduced as part of a series of community-based sentencing (CBS) options implemented since January 2011, under Criminal Procedure Code 2010. If the CBS is successfully completed, the criminal record will be rendered spent. This means the offender is deemed to have no record of that conviction.


The next hearing is on Jul 6 at 2.30pm, when the psychiatric report is expected to be ready.


The prosecution, led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Hay Hung Chun, reminded the courts that they had suggested on two previous occasions that Yee be assessed by relevant experts on his mental health.


Speaking to the media, Yee's father Alphonsus Yee said that he noted there was speculation from the public on Yee's mental condition but no previous medical check-ups had revealed that Yee might have this mental condition.


Yee was found guilty of two charges - one for making offensive or wounding remarks against Christianity and another for circulating obscene imagery. A third charge, for the teen blogger's statements on the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew in a YouTube video, was withdrawn.
On Tuesday, Yee agreed to privatise all his posts and not repost the offending posts, according to his lawyer Alfred Dodwell.


Yee had previously rejected the option of probation and a term in the Reformative Training Centre as a sentence, sticking to his original plea for a jail term.


In his previous hearing on Jun 2, Judge Kaur made the call for the reformative training suitability report to be done in view of Yee refusing a possible probation sentence and failing to turn up for meetings with his probation officer.


After Yee's probation officer reported the turn of events to the courts, prosecutors then made a call for reformative training, which was seen by them as a move that was in line with rehabilitation as opposed to a jail term or fine.


Reformative training is an option for young offenders aged between 16 and 18 years old who are assessed to be unsuitable for probation. Offenders will be detained for a minimum of 18 months in the Reformative Training Centre.


It was made known to prosecutors on May 21 that Yee had republished online the image and video pertaining to the case. He was told to take the materials down when he was charged.


In a statement Monday, the United Nations Human Rights Office asked Singapore courts to "drop the demand for sentencing (Yee) to the RTC" and called for the "immediate release of (Yee) in line with (Singapore's) commitment under the UN Convention on the Rights of Child".

Autism spectrum disorder impacts how a child perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in crucial areas of development — social interaction, communication and behavior.


Some children show signs of ASD in early infancy. Other children may develop normally for the first few months or years of life, but then suddenly become withdrawn or aggressive or lose language skills they've already acquired.


Each child with ASD is likely to have a unique pattern of behavior and level of severity — from low functioning to high functioning. Severity is based on social communication impairments and the restrictive and repetitive nature of behaviors, along with how these impact the ability to function.
Because of the unique mixture of symptoms shown in each child, severity level can sometimes be difficult to determine. However, within the range (spectrum) of symptoms, below are some common ASD actions and behaviors.


Social communication and interaction

• Fails to respond to his or her name or appears not to hear you at times
• Resists cuddling and holding and seems to prefer playing alone — retreats into his or her own world
• Has poor eye contact and lacks facial expression
• Doesn't speak or has delayed speech, or may lose previous ability to say words or sentences
• Can't start a conversation or keep one going, or may only start a conversation to make requests or label items
• Speaks with an abnormal tone or rhythm — may use a singsong voice or robot-like speech
• May repeat words or phrases verbatim, but doesn't understand how to use them
• Doesn't appear to understand simple questions or directions
• Doesn't express emotions or feelings and appears unaware of others' feelings
• Doesn't point at or bring objects to share interest
• Inappropriately approaches a social interaction by being passive, aggressive or disruptive

Patterns of behavior

• Performs repetitive movements, such as rocking, spinning or hand-flapping, or may perform activities that could cause harm, such as head-banging
• Develops specific routines or rituals and becomes disturbed at the slightest change
• Moves constantly
• May be uncooperative or resistant to change
• Has problems with coordination or has odd movement patterns, such as clumsiness or walking on toes, and has odd, stiff or exaggerated body language
• May be fascinated by details of an object, such as the spinning wheels of a toy car, but doesn't understand the "big picture" of the subject
• May be unusually sensitive to light, sound and touch, and yet oblivious to pain
• Does not engage in imitative or make-believe play
• May become fixated on an object or activity with abnormal intensity or focus
• May have odd food preferences, such as eating only a few foods, or eating only foods with a certain texture

Most children with ASD are slow to gain knowledge or skills, and some have signs of lower than normal intelligence. Other children with ASD have normal to high intelligence — they learn quickly, yet have trouble communicating and applying what they know in everyday life and adjusting to social situations. A small number of children with ASD are savants — they have exceptional skills in a specific area, such as art, math or music.

As they mature, some children with ASD become more engaged with others and show fewer disturbances in behavior. Some, usually those with the least severe problems, eventually may lead normal or near-normal lives. Others, however, continue to have difficulty with language or social skills, and the teen years can bring worse behavioral problems.
When to see a doctor

Babies develop at their own pace, and many don't follow exact timelines found in some parenting books. But children with autism spectrum disorder usually show some signs of delayed development within the first year.

If you suspect that your child may have ASD, discuss your concerns with your doctor. The symptoms associated with ASD can also be linked with other developmental disorders. The earlier that treatment begins, the more effective it will be.

Your doctor may recommend developmental tests to identify if your child has delays in cognitive, language and social skills, if your child:

• Doesn't respond with a smile or happy expression by 6 months
• Doesn't mimic sounds or facial expressions by 9 months
• Doesn't babble or coo by 12 months
• Doesn't gesture — such as point or wave — by 14 months
• Doesn't say single words by 16 months
• Doesn't play "make-believe" or pretend by 18 months
• Doesn't say two-word phrases by 24 months
• Loses previously acquired language or social skills at any age

Lee Hsien Loong elder son and Lee Kuan Yew eldest grand son is a austism. However, AGC did not and never charge Lee Yi Peng and Judge never instruct Lee Yi Peng to go to IMH.

This is a face-facing gesture from the PAP.

Be treated for ASD, you can get out of jail free with no criminal record. Wonder if the PAP also bundle in a scholarship package to the West to get him out of sinkapore for good.

If the ASD diagnosis is correct, then Amos is more likely Asperger, like Bill Gates. And having Amos around is a big threat to the PAP.

I was one of those who initially thought that he had ASD because he was behaving like a "little professor". However, after his manipulative move in getting that Vicent into an ambarrassing situation, I conceited that he is not ASD. The greatest asset of an ASD s their sincerity - they are no hypocrite, they don't lie or manipulate.

However, I think he does as a disorder, something which I would coined as ASS i.e. "Ah So Syndromes". The kind of vengeance that he had exhibited is very much like those calculative, vindictive woman - turning against allies without hesitation when they don't agree with him in totality, example the case of RN. The last posting in his FB through others, showing the names of prison officers who past sarcastic remarks, is another typical Ah So behaviour, trying to get the officers into trouble.

The most probable influense is the mother. A child is a reflection of the parents. Her genes must have very strong "Ah So" DNA. Probably her own parents were strict so she was suppressed through the nurturing process and would still behave within acceptable norms. However, her child, having inherited her genes and being nurtured in her way of thoughts, will manifest the ASS characteristics to the fullest.

The father is really a straight guy and did not play to the song. Hope it is a good ending for Amos.

Wah, you psychologist ah? Even if you are one in sinkapore, you are a half-baked one.

A bachelor degree in psychology qualifies you to call yourself a psychologist here whereas in developed countries, you need at least a Master's and then passing registration requirements (supervised practice for a huge number of hours and few exams) before that title can be assumed. Sinkapore's standard sucks.

Shows that PAP is getting extremely desperate already. They are in unbearable pains and distress and embarrassment. They are trapped, can not get out of the situation. They regret their own wrong moves, which trapped themselves. They don't know what to do to get out of their situation. A 16 yo boy fucked them hard, and they can not even handle him. How to rule the rest?

I have no qualification. However, I happened to work with quite a number of problem kids. Many are asd or adhd of different forms. One of them even got into trouble during the anonymous cyber attack. So I am just sharing the little something I have gathered through my exposure. Btw, most of the ASD kids' parents weren't aware that they have problem. Local expertise and facilities for this area is very limited and consultation is very costly, $200 per hour with no conclusion. Fully agreed that we are way behind in this area of medical science.
