Addressing the concern of the influx of foreign talent taking away jobs and depressing wages, PM Lee reassured Singaporeans that the Government’s responsibility and priority will always be Singaporeans. PM also elaborated that the influx of foreign talent will not decrease employment opportunities. On the contrary, PM remarked that quality foreign talent will only add to Singapore’s competitiveness.

Do you agree with PM Lee? What can be done to further reassure Singaporeans that their livelihoods are not threatened by foreign talent? Please share with us your view.

With due respect to all my friends from other lands, the term "foreign talent" does not quite describe the matter adequately. I think it is more of "foreign helping hand" that we are concerned with robbing job opportunties away. If there is "talent" to be tapped and for Sinagporeans to learn to upgrade our skills, we embrace our foreign bothers and sisters with open hands. Afterall, we are a migrant society, and welcoming poeple should not be difficult. But we need an assurance that with this "foreign talent" scheme, we are not losing jobs as a result. Perhaps the MOM can publish the numbers of the types of talents that they approved.

However, the ground evidence had shown differently. Many of my friends who had master and above are having difficulties finding a job in some of the schools as lecturers as many institutions and private schools prefer cheap (not better) lecturers.

To me, FT should only be recruited for extremely specialist skill sets or knowledge and should not be because they are cheaper. Many Singaporeans (especially in the IT sectors) had lost out to India Indians who claim themselves to be IT gurus... (I had seen my share of them and let me assure you that not all of them are as good as they claim). Some of them had been known to buy their degrees. So we might have a lot of these phonies around and we trade our Singaporeans for them.

The government kept mentioning time and again that the employers are the one to decide this. Should not there be some legislative measures in which there must be a certain percentage of locals for any firms? Currently, many companies might so decide to choose the cheaper lot of FT then Singaporeans.

The government also cannot blame Singaporeans for wanting a higher pay than some FT as our education fee is higher and our cost of living is higher comparative to some who are paying peanuts for their studies. Unless the government so able to control the cost of living in Singapore, it is natural that Singaporeans need a higher wage so as to be able to sustain their families.

Sometime, we question why Singaporeans themselves are viewed as talents but foreigners are. Is it because our education system failed us and not producing students who are good enough for the employers? If it is, whose fault it is...Ministry of Education?

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The government should to send special spy agents pretending working for these companies in checking them whom they employed large pool of foreigners. Feedbacks are only feedbacks, actions must follows in ensuring Singaporeans are not victimised in their workplace resulting in getting more foreigners instead. Many companies are actually going for cheap labour???

When I asked for engineers in my team, I was given 'FT' engineers who were no better than our diploma holders but paid very much less than ITE graduates. This was just to comply with regulations and the company saved cost. Not willing to bear the consequences of this 'FT' failures, I quited to joined a MNC at that time. You pay peanuts you get monkeys. Same logic as the government who commanded higher salary but telling the citizen not to expect high pay so as not to erode competitiveness. Will our leader be around if they are to be paid less? Why not have 'FT' to do the job and have 'People elected' Ministers representing the citizen? They can be supervise by the PM.

Well said.

Even an admin clerk can be considered as foreign talent. I knew one of this lady from Malaysia, her whole family live in a rented two rooms apt for years before she came to Singapore. As an admin clerk here for few months, she shifted to her own 3 room Condo with a pte car after converted her S$2K salary into ringgat.

After deducted CPF with S$2K salary, we are hard to meet month end here. Because of them employers think we are overpaid for salary so either we lower our salary expectation or forgo the job opportunity.

Foreign Talent? please think about it.

I fully agree what was said by "The Learner".Right now,i myself feel as if I'm not good enough for my own country.Go to the ground PM Lee.Even the coffee shop assistants having foreigner working for them.If foreigners really have jobs that we S'porean aren't capable off,i will not be so disgrunted. We boast to the world that our education are top of the class but why have education when later you know that you can't get jobs.I've friends that have spend a lot of money for their children education to see their child jobless. Also there are those willing to spend extra so as to send their child to work oversea and possible make their home away form home. Its ironic when a S'porean do well in education,it get publish very quickly and be use as an example for the Gov.But when that same person can't get a job,u'll say he is choosy?Hmm....then how many good singaporean talent choose oversea and doing well.Have the Gov ask them why?I do think that the gov should reevaluate cause if i can be blunt,Singaporean are the ones paying the ministers the millions of dollars they get right now.So how long can we Singaporean tolerate is a matter of time.I for one do not want to see bad things happen but if i have to fight for my right to feed my family.I won't think twice.

I welcome all FT, as how our fellow Singaporeans are also being given such respect in other countries. However, in a very knowledge based economy as in Singapore with virtually no resources, the best I would think is that the government shall impose some kind of quota system. Whereby, all FT companies shall employ at least 70% of locals. (just like how some countries does). In doing so, we not only get employed but also interacts on level play. For one thing for sure, these FTs are not 100% loyal to Singapore. They are just passer bys and makes the best money and investment here before they say "Aloha" and off to another location for an easier retreat and retirement. An example, the Indians who takes up PR or citizenship also will enjoy a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) status when they are back to India. Thus, if FTs are Indians, they will put their final hearts in place where they come from but with a huge retirements plans back home in India.

They will decrease singaporean employment opportunities definitely.

Government always reassured but no action show.

Foreign Talent are not talent at all.
If they are really talent, why not change our PM to foreign Talent and run our small red dot?

I believed if they are talent they should be better than our PM. And make our liveihoods better then what we are having now.
