While not all can be world class, however, regionally I am sure Singaporeans are able to hold their stead.
No short cut, using FTs, is not required.
Just a dedicated coach and committed bunch of Athletics.
Swimming and sailing for kiddos are rich men's activities.
Look at Chinese Swimming Club and Singapore Swimming Club, so many parents sent their kids to train almost every day, training starts at tender age of 4 or 5. All that for a chance for DSA into better secondary schools. Ditto that for sailing.

What about sports where the hidden talents among the unwashed masses can be nurtured and developed, if only they could get the kind of financial and educational support from the govt that rich kids get from their dads?
Sports like diving, badminton, table tennis suit our physiques – we don't need to rope in foreign talent at all to excel at them, even given our limited gene pool. All it takes is more investment and help from the govt right from a very young age, like what the M'sians are doing with their badminton and diving stars, who undergo centralized national training once they're identified as potential world-beaters in primary school.

The PAP wants prestige and gold medals - never mind how they are gotten or who won them. As for locals, they don't bother to spend effort cultivating the local pool, they just want to take the easy way out and buy FTs over. Truly deplorable and absolutely destroys the spirit of sportsmanship.
